Should Nerds Marry?

Well, if non-nerds breed with nerds, shouldn't their kids have some chance of turning out less nerdy than the nerd parent? But maybe not as cool as the cool parent?

Or it could go the other way -- they could become a nerd, but without all the intelligence to go with it.

BTW, in case anyone's wondering, I'm joking. I'm somewhat of a nerd myself (although not nearly on the level as the guy mentioned in the OP's article. )

I am a nerd who married a non-nerd. I needed his street smarts. If we had children it would be the perfect combination of all that is needed to succeed in life.

Ach, we all went through a nerdy awkward stage. Just some folks never thought they did but trust me, we ALL did at some point in our lives.

I am a nerd married to a nerd. Of oldest DD is extremely popular and we are a great shame to her. Our youngest has a D&D game with her friends where DH is the DM.

As far as nerds, this is a very un-PC story, but here goes.
When I was 13, I had to go to the Univ. for this awards ceremony that had to do with the Johns Hopkins talent search or something. I don't remember really, but I know it involved taking the SAT's when I was in 7th grade and I did well. (making me a nerd HAHA). I didn't want to go, my mom made me. I kept telling her I wasn't going to some stupid nerd convention!! I was far too cool of a nerd for that!! Anyway, we get up there, we're walking into the hall and we pass this family of 4...all of them wearing thick, black framed glasses and dressed oh so not cool. I took one look at them, turned to my mom and said "I'm outta here. I am not going in!!" She yanked me up and told me to act my age and get moving, all the while tryign not to laugh at me and my horror! I was so mortified! None of my friends were there and I was surrounded by kids that did soooo much better than me! It was awful! To this day, we talk about my less than stellar attitude that night and laugh.

Excue me, I was writing my own computer programs on my Commodore 128 when I was a youngin'. It gets no nerdier than that (unless you had a Commodore 64, but I was a little too young for that).

Nerds are generally the brightest and most financially successful people in society, so I think there's nothing wrong with them marrying.

Also, by definition, anyone who would post to a Disney message board is, at the very least, a geek.

I'm a geek married to a nerd. We balance each other out because the things I geek out about, he has no interest in and vice versa.

Damn, now I feel old -- my first program was written for my VIC-20. I was feeling pretty geeky (at 9 ) when I maxxed out the whopping RAM on that puppy and had to upgrade (e.g. ask Santa for) to the C64.

OK before this gets to be an elitist Nerd thread

I am the GM for the weakend StarWars roleplaying game that happens at my house. My wife plays in the game. We have played Husband/Wife characters in other peoples games. I also had to buy her a PS3 so that she could play Unreal 3 (she could not wait the 6 months for it to come out on PC).

Also I have 4 working computers networked in my home so we can play: Diablo, Unreal 2K4, Starcraft, and Battlegrounds together with friends. And We have an XBox360 to play Battlefront2 and Seven Sorrows on the Big screan.

We also both collected comics, like Monty Python (yes nerd material), and love They Might Be Giants!!.

So I am a Nerd, but I ain't no geek!

My first computer was actually a TRS-80 CoCo (color computer).

I'm a huge science fiction fan, to the point that I collect old "Astounding" magazines to get some of my favorites in their original, serialized format.

I've played D&D for years, though it's been about a decade since I last rolled the dice.

Played the "Magic: The Gathering" collectable card game as recently as a month ago.

I've been in the computer industry since Gateway was still making those three foot tall towers and calling them "home computers".

Ummm....

Oh...I wear glasses, most of the time (I've got contacts...just don't wear them very often).

I average about 3 books a week, ranging in topics from political to sci-fi/fantasy to just about anything else.

My geek-fu is strong!
