Should Michelle Kwan Automatically Go to the Olympics?

Twice is too long? Irina Slutskaya - who won the Gold Medal at the last Olympics, has been competing longer than Kwan, and Salt Lake City was her 3rd Olympics. She was written off by many after illnesses and lousy seasons.
:confused3 Sarah Hughes won the gold in SLC, do you mean Worlds?

Sarah's Hughes' father is an attorney and there are also 6 kids in the family. Sarah is among the youngest, and her younger sister skates. So, even if they are well off, money could still potentially be an issue in that it costs big bucks to send kids to college as well as pay for skating.
As a college student and former skater myself, I know that both are expensive, but I'm pretty sure that Sarah would have earned more than enough money in post-Olympics sponsorship deals and skating shows to cover her college expenses.

It is very sad that Michelle is injured and felt she couldn't compete at Nationals. Didn't she compete just a month ago somewhere??? Maybe I am incorrect in this?

Yes, Michelle competed last month and she beat Cohen in the competition. Michelle had just been skating about two weeks after healing a hip injury. A week later she sustained the groin injury.

I wasn't happy when they let Nancy K go in the 90's and don't like that they are letting Michelle go now. She wasn't there, she shouldn't go! End of story!

They had to let Kerrigan go in 94 as she had been assulted by the thugs hired by Harding and her husband. To not let Kerrigan go would have been suicide for the USFSA.

If they didn't have a petition process in place for figure skating or gymnastics, there would be a lot less US medals. 1996 the US women won team gold. Shannon Miller and Domonique Moceanu petitioned onto that team. Without these two we wouldn't have gold. Miller wouldn't have an individual gold.

The Olympics are not always about what is fair - they are about sending our best so we can win more medals than the other guys. I'm not saying that is right, but that is life in this country.

She only beat Sasha because it was an American Idol-like competition where the viewers could call in and vote. It was just a popularity contest. She's not in shape, because of her injury. And she didn't exactly set the world on fire at Worlds last year when she wasn't injured. She shouldn't have been named to the team, and hopefully she'll withdraw before the Olympics.

I was at Nationals, and this was how all of my friends felt.

Today is decision day!

Also, read the very last part of the article. What are your thoughts on this?

Michelle Kwan’s task is simple.

Prove she’s healthy enough to skate, and her quest for that elusive Olympic gold medal can continue. Appear to still be hobbled or ailing, and that dream is likely over.

The “Should she or shouldn’t she?” debate that’s swirled around U.S. figure skating all month will finally be resolved Friday. A five-person monitoring committee will watch her do her short and long programs on her home ice in Los Angeles, and determine whether she’s fit and healthy enough to compete.

U.S. Figure Skating will announce its decision on Kwan at a 3:30 p.m. news conference near Los Angeles International Airport, the Los Angeles Times reported.

If she is, she’s on her way to Turin. If not, she’ll have to watch again as someone else gets that gold medal she’s sought for so long.

“If I feel that I can’t be ready, I will pull myself off the team,” Kwan said earlier this month. “I’ve said that before and I’m sticking to it. If I don’t believe I can be 100 percent and at my best, I don’t believe it’s good for me to go.”

Kwan was the gold-medal favorite for both Nagano and Salt Lake City, but wound up beaten by an American teenager both times. She won a silver in Nagano in 1998 and a bronze in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Now 25, she’s stuck around the last four years for one more shot at an Olympic gold medal.

But the five-time world and nine-time U.S. champion had to ask for a medical bye onto the team after withdrawing from nationals with a groin injury. Her petition was granted — with the condition that she prove to the monitoring committee Friday that she’s ready to compete in Turin.

Though she’s set the gold standard for the sport for a decade, she missed almost the entire season with injuries and didn’t jump from mid-December until Jan. 13. At her only competition, a made-for-TV international, she didn’t complete a single triple jump.

The monitoring committee will want to see that she can jump and spin, as well as do her short and long programs.

The session is scheduled to start late in the morning at the East West Ice Palace in Artesia, Calif., her home rink, and Kwan will do her short program first. After a break, she’ll come back and do her long program.

The session will be conducted by U.S. Figure Skating international committee chairman Bob Horen; technical controller Charlie Cyr; world judge Paula Naughton; international judge Lorrie Parker; and athlete representative Brittney Bottoms. Though she won’t be scored as if in competition, Horen said she wouldn’t be given a pass, either.

“I will assure you, the monitoring committee will be as tough as the judges were (at nationals),” Horen said.

If the committee decides Kwan isn’t healthy enough to skate, she will be replaced by Emily Hughes, the younger sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes. Emily Hughes finished third at nationals.

The sessions are closed to the public.

The Associated Press was offered one of two spots in a reporting pool to watch Kwan’s performance but declined because of conditions imposed by U.S. Figure Skating.

Pool reporters would be prohibited from reporting what they witnessed at the sessions for several hours, until after the panel announced its decision on whether Kwan could join the Olympic team. Figure skating officials also insisted that the pool reporters agree not to write a column about Kwan’s performance for 24 hours.

“The AP couldn’t agree to either of these restrictions,” sports editor Terry Taylor said. “Her skating is news and the embargo amounted to a news blackout. As for when a column is written, we believe that’s for us to decide.”

David Raith, executive director of U.S. Figure Skating, was not immediately reachable for comment by telephone.

::yes:: Yep, big difference between a real competition and the one that poster is talking about- big difference.

I'm also adding that I don't think Michelle stands a chance against Sasha and Irina at the Olympics.

Good news IMO,

Kwan Keeps Place on U.S. Olympic Team After Skating for Judges
Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Michelle Kwan kept her place on the U.S. Olympic team after she skated before judges who decided she was physically able to take part in next month's Winter Games.

The 25-year-old Kwan, a nine-time U.S. champion and five- time world title winner, is seeking her first gold medal after winning silver and bronze in the last two Olympics.

``I didn't think past today,'' she said on a media conference call. ``I know I have a lot of work to do. Thinking gold is good. I feel good, injury free.''

She was named to the team after she asked for a medical waiver because a groin injury kept her out of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The Olympic berths generally go to the top finishers in the national meet, which was held two weeks ago in St. Louis.

Kwan performed run-throughs of her short and free programs in front of five skating officials and judges during today's closed session at a rink in Artesia, California. She fell once during her short program, and made four triple jumps, U.S. Figure Skating International Committee Chairman Bob Horen said on a media conference call.

``It's truly the opinion of this monitoring team that Michelle could win the Olympics,'' Horen said, adding that the judges discussed Kwan's performance for an hour before deciding unanimously to keep her on the team. ``She could win a medal. She's skating very well.''

Kwan's Teammates

Kwan joins Sasha Cohen and Kim Meissner, who finished first and second at the U.S. championships, in representing the U.S. in Turin, Italy. Emily Hughes, the third-place finisher and younger sister of 2002 Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes, will be the first alternate. The Winter Games start Feb. 10.

Kwan lost an Olympic berth in 1994 in a similar situation.

The 13-year-old Kwan was knocked from a spot on the team that went to the Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, after Nancy Kerrigan had her knee battered in an attack at practice prior to the national championships. Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal.

I agree I am really happy too. Even if she is not as able to win the gold as in the past 2 Olympics, it will be great to get to see her in one more.

Read it....

I DO thnkt hat the last part is odd..... so are they telling us something in "reading between the lines"?
Matbe she really wouldn't be ready BUT WE can't see that,, like we did watching all the others skate at Nationals?

NEVER have I thought Michelle was a bad skater by any means...maybe she WILL win Gold, but do I think this whole process has been fair...absolutely NOT.
My opinion, of course.....and many others on here with judging experience. Just becasue we think this process hasn't been fair does NOT mean we think she is not deserving to go...BIG difference!!

That being said, I hope ALL 3 of our skaters representing the U.S. do a fantastic job.

So, anyone see the news that Michelle is having trouble in Torino? She was on the news saying she is not "feeling" right and during practice couldn't attempt any jumps. There was talk she may have to "pull" from competition!!

I really feel for her, but if she couldn't do this, she should have bowed out. If she ends up pulling I for one will be quite upset because she is taking the spot of someone else that can compete.
It was only about 2 weeks ago that the powers that be watched her and said she could go! I know someone posted that no press was allowed in to see her do that performance, so what really happened?! Remember they said that they felt she could win a gold?

HOW can she be ready to win a gold if she is almost in tears at practice and can't do any jumps?!

Again, feel bad for her...it is quite a bummer she got the injury at this time, but this should prove to people that injuries don't just magically disappear....AND, that there is a Qualifying competition for a reason!!

I hope she can pull herself together to at least perform repectably, now that she is there and the other girl is not.

go USA! :cheer2:

yeah and Emily Hughes is in, if she she can make it out of NYC because of the snow. its a good thing that they dont compete till the 20th. so Emily has at least a week of practice....

Well, I am glad. I respect her for realizing it. But, I feel she should have known before now. An athlete should know that their body is ready or not before now--it was only, what, 2 weeks ago that she skated for the commitee? I know she really wanted and desired to be there, but she should have not even gone.

Hopefully Hughes can get ready in time. Good for her!

supposedly she was in New York training for the Worlds. Thats why she wasnt in Torino. Because she wasnt on the team, she didnt have ice space to train on. So she stayed in New York, training ready to fly out when when she was needed if be. I am really glad she has a chance and hopefully will fly out later today if she can get a flight.....

I think a small portion of the press (AP) was invited to the tryout; however, the AP found the guidelines too restrictive. I think there were rules such as no photography and a delay in reporting the results of the tryouts. Why were there guidelines in the first place, I don't know, it's definitely debatable.

I think Kwan re-aggravated her injury yesterday. The pros thought Kwan would be a better shot at medalling than Hughes. I don't know. A lot of top athletes play with minor injuries and are elevated to hero status. Why not give Kwan the same consideration? Oh well, kudos to her for bowing out early and giving Hughes some time to train in Italy.

I heard on the news that she doesn't plan to travel to Italy until later in the week, she'll continue to practice at home.
