We leave for the Turks and Caicos Islands in less than 3 weeks. I'm debating whether I should bother carrying my D50 and my 75-300mm lens with me- just in case I see something that I need reach for. I doubt I'd bring it on the beach mostly because I would have to be bringing it back and forth to the room so I wouldn't have to leave it alone while swimming/snorkeling/walking. I probably wouldn't carry it on a boat if we do any excursions again because it would mean leaving behind it while snorkeling. I have an underwater camera and a Canon A560 that I will be bringing. We are staying on Providenciales and there isn't anything land based that we will be doing other than beach.

I'd say pack it, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't bring it and then wish you had. We've been to the Caribbean a few times on both cruises and land vacations and even though we use a p&s and u/w housing primarily at the beach I could never leave my K100 home (although DH and DD would be happy if I left it at home!!:teeth:).

I don't know much about that place, but you should consider the possibility of theft if you are going to be leaving it out of your sight for any length of time. My parents had a RAZR and a few other odds and ends stolen out of their room in the Dominican Republic. There, selling the stolen items is worth up to a year's wages, so fear of losing their job is not a deterrent.

I lived in the Turks and Caicos Islands for 6 years and still visit frequently. There is obviously some theft there but I don't think it is a huge problem. I will say that there are some amazing sunsets on Provo so if you like to take pictures of that, you should take it. However, there isn't much to take pictures of other than the beach and the sunsets :) . If you go to Little Water Cay you could get some great iguana shots but that means taking your camera on a boat.

Yeah, what was I thinking!...Sunsets and wildlife. Better bring it, lens and a tripod. My carry-on just got a bit heavier;)
We were there 15yrs ago when my DD18 was 3, stayed at the Ocean Club which is where we are staying this trip, also. My mom has been going there for 2 wks, every winter, since that 1st trip 15yrs ago- she loves it there. As a matter of fact, she is coming along:)
We went to Little Water Cay to see the iguanas on that trip and I think thats the excursion I want to take this time. I have a waterproof bag I can keep it in while on the boat.
We are hoping to see Jojo again:)
Thanks for bringing me to my senses:)

If you can decide, compromise. I say bring the lens and leave the body at home.

Don't laugh! Been there! My DH and I went to BC to go hiking in the mts last fall. We hiked 4 of the 6 days we were there. On the 3rd hike we get to the trailhead, I get my gear together, no camera! My 75-300mm lens was in my backpack but I had gone back to the hotel room to grab something and left my camera on the desk. Luckily, I threw my Canon p&s in the backpack. It probably ended up being for the best because we ended up off our intended route and went miles out of the way- much of it uphill- the extra weight would have killed me for sure. Hike #4 I finally got smart, I made DH carry the lens.

Have fun! My husband is actually going down in a couple of weeks for work. When we lived there he worked for the IGA and they are still a client of his, he goes down a few times a year. I have stayed at Ocean Club a few times and that's where he usually stays when he goes down for work. It is a beautiful place, I truly miss those beaches.

When I was in my traveling days I took my Nikon N6006 (and later my Nikon N70 and now D50) with me every time. St Maarten, Cancun, Cozumel, Aruba, Las Vegas, London, Bermuda, Jamaica (including walking up Dunns River Falls), Grand Cayman, a few other islands , 4 cruises, Hong Kong & Bangkok and 4 trips to Disney. I walked on many beaches and got some great shots that are still hanging on my walls today (some 15+ years later). I've never not taken my slr or dslr on vacation with me.
