Should I Worry?

My family got the free dinning deal on August 13-22. I asked my mom why we got such a good deal, and she said it was because August is hurricane season, and they want to attract customers :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: . Do you think I have anything to worry about hurricane wise :confused3 . We got the insurance, but still, i can hardly wait the 27 days now let alone probably next summer. Has anyone had an experiance of a hurrican, or somthing else causing you to have to cancel your trip? I guess all I can to is pray for no hurricanes  .

Unfortunately nobody can answer this with any degree of certainty. All you can really do is wish/hope that central FL won't be affected during your stay.

Don't worry. It won't change a thing. You have the insurance. We were there during a minor hurricane about 15 years ago. We were staying in the Contemporary. It blew hard over night. The next morning there were some power and computer disruptions. We went to Epcot and pretty much walked on all the rides. I think last year was the only time in recent history that they closed the parks due to hurricanes, and that was two days. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was the case.

While I don't want a hurricane to hit while we're in the World, I'm not overly concerned about it. I was talking to a WDW cast member today who confirmed the rumor I'd heard that Disney is a great, safe place to be during a hurricane. She said that when one nears Orlando, her whole family heads to the parks! :rotfl: If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is!

Yes August is hurricane season, but so is June, July, September, October, and November. Free dining is not offered because of hurricane season (otherwise it would be offered from the beginning of June until the end of November), it's offered because it's a low travel season (since families with children go, many are unwilling or cannot take their kids out of school and this is the time school starts up again).

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You have the travel insurance and in the event a hurricane comes through while you're there, everything I've read on here indicates that you'll be taken care of really well.

We were in WDW for hurricane Charley. We were in Vero Beach until the day after the hurricane when we drove to WDW. The streets were bad. Checking in was a little longer than usual but WDW was fantastic. The pools were closed due to trees and branches that had blown in but the parks were opened up the next day. Everyone we saw and met was wonderful and helpful. The people who had been there during the storm said that the hotel treated them great. The air conditioning stayed on. They had food, water, ice etc. They said it was a very safe place to be. We were asked to bring in the furniture from the balcony and to draw the drapes at Vero but we felt safe while we were there. The Staff made sure we knew what to do if the stoem got really really bad. It wasnt bad. We rented a movie, got take out food and stayed in bed all warm. When we got to WDW were We were at POR. We were so grateful to the CMs. Some had not even gone home to see what damage their own property had suffered . They stayed to cover for the people who could not make it in. Don't worry there is always something. We are going in Dec and I worry that the airport here will not be able to get us out and we will be stuck here.......

Disney World must be doing something right during a hurricane, because I remember hearing how some Florida residents checked into their resort hotels to ride out the storms.

We will also be going to the World during hurricane season and are not too concerned. I ran across this article a while back and it should help ease your mind about being at Disney during a hurricane.

From what I've read on the DISboards, people who have been through a hurricane during their vacation have said they were always taken very good care of (not to mention that attendance in the parks are usually down...I remember seeing some pictures posted here the day after and it looked like a ghost town).

Enjoy...you'll be at Disney!

We were there during Wilma last year. The parks were closed Monday morning and then Epcot and MK open at 1PM, just for resort guests.

We rode POC and had our own boat.

Early morning the weather was terrible, but then the sun came out and it had cooled off from the humidity and was great the rest of the week.

I was very glad we hadn't changed our plans and went.

We live 3 minutes away from Disney and only lost one small, brand-new tree when the hurricane hit Orlando directly. I won't say there's nothing to worry about during a hurricane or that you won't have one (we haven't had any yet this year, though), but things are built pretty soundly around here and the parks were only closed for one day when 'the big one' hit.

You've got lots of reason to expect the best. The biggest problem you're likely to encounter is the heat and humidity!

We were in Orlando during Jeanne in September 04....ok i cant comment on what life is like on property during a hurricane (but I heard v good things)....but the day after it was over we went to AK and it was DEAD.....the only reason we had to wait for TTBAB was because they wanted a few more people to make it worth running it for us! There were no queues at CMM and the only real time we saw how many people were in the park was at parade.....other than that we had our pick of attractions and there were still prime spots left for parade viewing too

Another Hurricane Jeanne person here.

Don't sweat it! Disney has the routine for hurricanes down pat. Everything runs like a well oiled machine.

The park was closed for one day and the night of the hurricane Disney shut everything down at 7 pm and made sure everyone was safe in the rooms.

You can hear the hurricanes,no doubt about that, but as long as you stay away from the windows you'll be fine.

wahoo another DISer who was in Orlando on my 18th.....thankyou for sharing magic with me!!!!!

Like others have said, I wouldn't be too concerned.

I was worried a little at first, but I feel much safer there than at home for a hurricane (I live in New Orleans and we would have to deal with horrendous traffic to evacuate if a storm were coming here again).

Also, remember Orlando is not right on the coast so nothing like what happened in New Orleans can happen there. I think hurricane season is ONE of the reason that free dining is offered, the other is schools starting, heat, humidity, ect...Disney wants to keep the crowds up year round! The worst that could happen if one hits while you are down there is flights might be delayed so you may be stuck longer than planned, if you are flying that is.
