We will be at Universal from August 24th, a Sunday, through until August 29th
a Friday. 5 days total. We will be doing 4 days at the parks, park to park, and also staying onsite at Portofino Bay. One of the 5 days we will be just enjoying the resort and pool. Should I concentrate on planning out what rides and times we should plan for each day or just not worry about it? On only one of the days we will definitely plan to get to the parks early to do Gringott's. But otherwise should I worry about researching? Please advise.

No, no planning required aside from deciding what day to do early entry for
Gringotts.

Four full days in the parks would be plenty of time regardless. Add the fact that you are staying onsite, which entitles you to Express access, and you'll have no time issues at all.

The only thing I might suggest would be to look into times for the shows that you'll find at the Studios side.

If you've never been to Universal, the CityWalk area will give you plenty to do on your 5th day. There is a really good miniature golf course that opened within the last year or so.

Enjoy.

Like mentioned above....other than your Gringotts plan you will have nothing to worry about.

Prepare for the following.....

I should say, the Express passes don't apply to the Harry Potter stuff. But with 4 park days, even if you spend one whole day doing all the Potter stuff you'll still be good to go.

Thanks everyone. I might try to just plan on one of the days to do some of the water rides, one right after the other, one morning, before heading back the hotel. This way if we are soaked, we can just hop into the pool.

Thanks for asking this question because I have been wondering too. We will be at Universal Aug 25-28 after 5 nights at Disney. I've planned everything to the last minute for Disney and was hoping to be more relaxed at Universal.

Are reservations necessary at CityWalk restaurants?

your dates are monday-thursday
probably not a problem to not have ressies.

saturday night a ressie is a necessity for many of the restaurants at CW.
