Should I wash tote bags before using transfers?

I bought some canvas tote bags at Hobby Lobby and plan to use iron on transfers to decorate them for our trip. Should I wash them first? Dry them?

Thanks!

I would say yes. I can't think of the right word, but a lot of items have something on them that they recommend washing (but not using fabric softener) to get off so that the transfer adheres better.

Sizing.:)

Any fabric item you purchase is likely going to have sizing (starch) on it, to make it look all pretty in the store. It will interfere with transfers and dye.

It doesn't really take a lot-- I usually just throw them in a quick wash with (literally) a drop or two of detergent. When I remember, I also pour a little white vinegar in the rinse water to help cut any remaining suds. (No, you can't smell the vinegar when it is finished.:) )

She is right...vinegar does not have a smell once it is dry. And thanks for the sizing word...it just wasn't coming to me. :goodvibes

I washed our shirts before, but not the tote. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the crisp look back. Transfer adhered fine and is still stuck on it after MNSSHP and home trick or treating. I haven't washed it because of the feathery trim I attached, so I'm not sure how well it would hold up if you wanted to wash it at a later date.
