Should I rethink my choice of OKW over CSR? (Sorry, a little long)

Well, I stayed at OKW in a 2BR and I just refuse to go back to any lower model whe I stay at WDW. Even with the studio the amount of room you get is great compared to a hotel room. Someone in an eariler post gave the room sizes 270sq ft for OKW, but my DVC material states that there is 370 sq ft. You can really feel this when you get back from a long day at the parks.

We also used our kitchen every single day. As for the distance, I found it great to have a littleplace "away from it all" but yet still feeling like I am connected. I am no old man either, I am 33 and love this place.

Now if you are looking for the hustleand bustle of a hotel, then CSR would be your place. Yes, you have a food court, but it can be a bit away. I really did not like the spread of CSR since it seemed like there was a bad bus stop to walking ratio. My mother stayed there 2 years ago and stated that is was a good deal like staying at a regular hotel room.

As for the "elevator problem" if you stay in the higher building numbers (like 60 and up) these are newer and do have elevators. Remember also that Disney staff will deliver your bags (the expected tip is about 50cents-1dollar a bag. Of course the whole walking up and down the stairs would bit.

As for the ice machines, your "little" fridge (it is really not that small) should have a freezer as well, but you could always place your drinks in the fridge.

There is a good deal of "thumbs down" for studios when compared to the 1BR, and if there was anyway you can, I would get the 1BR. Of couse the OKW rooms around that time are hard to get right now. My family and I will be there 11/27 - 12/9 and we are staying at a 2BR at OKW. With my 3 and 4 year old kids, I will welcome the extra space, about 1200sq ft,which is bigger than most apartments I used to live in. Although I can go on and on about the 2BR, that won't help you much. The balcony (porch) is nothing to size at either. It has a nice table for 3-4people along with a ceiling fan (yes even in Decmber you may use it) and some nice views based on where you stay. My last place I got anice view of a creek and the natural FLA vegitation. I have been living in CA for the last 12 years and before that I grew up in FLA, so setting out there watching the creek and the little animals and such was just great for me.

The whole idea behind OKW is to have a "home away from home" or in other words, not to be in a hotel. I actually love the fact that I did not have to say "come back later" to the maid at 8am in the morning ater a long night at the parks. And since I am stillon CA time, 5am is hard to wake up at times, even at Disney. I believe you would need to use a community washer/dryer, but they should be free, to me a great benifit since I like to wash the clothes prior to returning home since that is one less thing I have to do when I unpack. In fact that was even wierd the first time I did it to unpackmy bags right back into the drawers that I took them out when I packed to go.

I never heard the Buses, and I was on the groundfloor and they went right by my front door area. The rooms are still "set in" and not right on the street/parking lot. however, the ability to bring the car (or the bellman's golf cart)right to my door and unload...a blessing. Soemtimes I do rent a car, and it was great to be able to leave a few items in the car and go back out a very short disctance to retrive them when I needed to.

It is all about what you like to have on a vacation. If you feel that you need the real "hotel" scene with the people, the food court, the maid, the smaller/compact room..then CSR would be your choice. I did not mean to make it sound bad or even the wrong choice, even I like that on occasion. If you want to "go home" for the vacation, then OKW would be a great place.

OK then there is the boat ride to DTD, that is a great little trip and so fun to do with the kids. Also, when it comes time to get back to the room, the boat is so much better than the bus, and much less crowded. To be fair though, we did not take the bus at the end of the night when DTD closed.

One final thing...the maid thing bothered me too, but when I found out the trash bin was basically outside my door (about 100ft) and I had the washers, I didn't care. We also had a vaccum, and yes I used it, when a then 2 and 3 yo kids, we needed to use it twice a day.

Have a great trip, maybe we might bump into each other....but will we even know it???

Now I just need to know if I should request 1st or 2nd floor. Which is better, not having to climb the stairs, or having a balcony with a better view. Do the 1st floor STUDIOS have a balcony or a patio at ground level.
I really like the higher floors. I especially like to be on the third floor for view and for not having "upstairs neighbors". We have had a couple of 2nd floor experiences with loud people above. The problem with requesting 2nd floor is that you don't know if you will be in a 2 floor or 3 floor building. Instead of that, you might want to request top floor. I usually only request non-smoking for medical reasons and take my chances on where we will be. We have never had a really bad location or view, although I didn't care for the fact that building 64 didn't have it's own parking lot.

This second-guessing you are going through is a great example of why most members don't rent points -- they want to avoid problems like this. I know you don't mean any harm to the member who has rented you points. But you need to let them know as far ahead as you possibly can.

That's why I'm asking questions now, more than 5 months in advance. I'm no longer second-guessing.
I promise I won't cancel the OKW reservation. :guilty:

I hate to ask about the pool hopping, but will we be able to pool hop or not. I get the impression this may be one of those touchy subjects, but I will abide by the rules. I'd just like to know what the rules are.

Maid service is a pro and con. You don't get full made service on day 4 at OKW, you get trash and towel. A small clean up.

That's right. You only get the full service on day 4 if you're staying 8 nights or longer, right? We're only staying 7 nights.

And I'd like to apologize for finding perceived negative aspects of OKW (or even CSR). I did say that "I'm hearing" these different things about these resorts. I didn't say they were true. That's why I was asking for a little help from those of you who may have the facts.

The rules are that DVC members staying on points can pool hop to all pools, but BC/YC and AKL. You may be asked to show membership card with KTTW card. They don't always ask for membership card, though, and you're right it's kind of a touchy subject 'round here.

You've hit a couple touchy spots (waivering renters), but IIRC your rental cotnract says that you have until 30 days out to cancel. DOing your homework early is a good thing. Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

So you're saying I won't be able to pool hop because I'm not a DVC member, right? When you say "DVC members staying on points", are you referring to the DVC members only, or is someone renting points included in that category. I'm sorry I don't understand all the terminology here on the DVC forum. I've never been here before.

That's a hard one to answer. Your key will say "member" on it because you are staying on points. Some of the resorts do not check anything beyond that key card, but some have been reported to be asking for the DVC member card as well as the key. It will really be a hit or miss thing for pool hopping. The other perks are probably not going to happen for you like dining discounts and other discounts afforded members. Most of those establishments HAVE been asking for the member card as well as the key saying "member".

Just one more clarification. It's very confusing because the KTTW card will say "DVC Member." When we say "Member", though, we are referring to owners, not renters. They grey area is that the other resorts may not ask for the actual Member (owner) card, just the KTTW card.

OKW is a charming resort. The walkways have crushed seashells. It's very light and pretty with lots of flowers and palm trees. It is spread out, but we just hopped any bus to the parks and rode to the front of the resort as the buses always stop up front before they exit for the parks.

The beds at OKW are queen size and very comfortable. I think they put new mattresses in recently. The porches on the studios are big. They have a table and two chairs.

Coronado is spread out too, and you do have the food court tip charge no matter what. Also, you'll see more suits (business people because of the convention center).

I'd pick OKW hands down. It's got charm and shade (shade is something Coronado doesn't have).

CSR is first and foremost a hotel. I like coming to my DVC resort and hearing welcome home. It sounds corney but it truley does feel like I am home.
Once you have stayed at the DVC places it is really hard to go back to a hotel. I traded last New Years to the GF which was unbelievably nice but it is still a hotel room and I missed the space. Luckly I sent DH out to the lobby to get some away time but dsx2 and dd AGH>>
I would never ever ever not stay at the larger room.
We are going again same time period for our annual christmas piligramage to the mouse to get ready for the holiday. Booked a 2b unit, cann't wait.
Once you see disney do christmas, everything else palls ::MinnieMo

First of all I didn't read every post, just skimmed thru and didn't notice anyone pointing out that although the rates seem close between the OKW ($105/night) and CSR ($107/night) you have to add in the resort taxes at CSR. That would jump the price up at CSR to about $119-120/night!

It's also nice to be able to pack a little lighter and take advantage of the free washer/dryers at OKW, even if you have to go down to the pool area to do the laundry. Throw in a load, take a dip in the pool.... swap them out to the dryer... take another quick dip in the pool and lay out and work on the tan. Go grab the clothes, head to the room, then continue on with your day!

Just a few things from me.

I have stayed at all the resorts at WDW with the exception of GF and Cont. Coronado is not anything like a deluxe hotel. The amenities are just not there. It is a pretty motel. While the deluxe accomadations are hotels. I don't mean this as a slight against CSR. CSR is my favorite moderate resort also. I love the Pepper Patch. The pool (While a bit of a walk) is nice. But all in all CSR cannot compare to OKW. Our first DVC stay was in a studio at OKW. It was during this first stay that my DH said our purchase of DVC was one of the best decision we had ever made. (A HUGE statement from my DH) Prior to this trip our stays had been mostly in the moderates like CSR.

Mousekeeping. I find the lack of it a blessing. I don't have to fight the maid for use of my room. I don't have to clean up the room before I leave.

Food Court. The main reason I use the food court is breakfast. With a kitchenette, I just buy a gallon of milk and a box of cereal and my DS can have breakfast while I get ready. No need to wait until everyone is showered and dressed just to get a bite to eat.

Retirement Community. I am still laughing at this one. :rotfl2: It is more like a Residential community. It is like living in Disney. When you leave the parks, you get to go home. I agree with the noice of people traffic at the other resorts. With only 4 or 6 units in a building, the people noise is very light. No pack of wild teenages running up and down the corridors at 11PM trying to find thier rooms. I promise this happens at least every other stay I have in any hotel. Not just Disney.

Just to clarify, OKW ($105) vs. CSR ($107) is a "pre-tax" comparison. I'm paying an ave. of $117/night at OKW. I just subtracted the equivalent "tax" to compare it to the CSR $107/night (AAA) rate.

We are definitely staying at OKW. Can't wait! :bounce:

Keith I just wanted to add that I think you have made the right decision. This is coming from a DVC member that has a special place for CSR, it was our first onsite resort.

This summer we actually spent a week at CSR and a week at OKW. By the time our CSR part of the trip was over we had decided we no longer had the desire to stay there ocassionally. The food court service has gotten terrible, it was bad last year and this year it was even worse. Also the fridges at CSR are pretty small although I'm not sure how big they are in the studios at OKW, we were in a 2 bed.

Have a great trip!
Lori
