Should I pay for the shoes?

DH invited a guy who works for him over to our house last weekend for dinner. The guy's wife proceeded to wolf 2 bottles of wine and get pretty silly, to say the least. When they went to leave, she could not find her shoes. I saw her take them off by the door when she arrived, but they weren't there when she went to leave 3 hours later.

I don't know what happened to them. Our kids didn't take them and I searched my house everywhere. I feel really bad about it and feel like I should pay for her shoes since they were lost in my house. Everyone else tells me I shouldn't. Maybe a funny card with a gift certificate to a shoe store? I really don't know this gal well and she was a good sport about it, but I can't imagine what happened to the shoes. :confused3 Should I pay for them??

Only if you promise to put the note in a card that says:

"Sorry you were too drunk to find your shoes at my house. "

(I'm kidding - you don't owe her anything for the shoes. She probably would have just thrown up all over them on the way home anyway.)

Do you have dog? Maybe it took the shoes and hid them. :confused3 Just a thought.

This story reminds me of the Sex and the City episode where Carrie attends a friend's party and her shoes (Manolo's) couldn't be found at the end of the night.

That is so strange! Are you sure nobody else hid them as a joke? That would be strange for them to just disappear! I don't know if I would pay for them or not. It might be nice to offer.

That's what I thought about too! :rotfl: BTW, the party host ended up paying for Carrie's shoes. How do you know your kids didn't take them? What about a dog? It does seem strange that they just disappeared.

Were there other guests at your house, too? Like in the Sex and the City episode, maybe someone liked them and claimed them as their own. :confused3

If not, was it your dog?

My dog doesn't like shoes, but he has been known to make stuffed animals disappear (into his stomach), so maybe if your dog is smitten with shoes, he is capable of this disappearing act as well!

Did she have a large purse? :rotfl:

This is exactly what I was thinking! :lmao:

that is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I read the OP!!!!! God, I miss that show!!!!!!:happytv:

oh dear....how can you be sure your children did not take them? i don't know if you should pay for them. I would, but that's just my OP.

Shouldn't an adult be expected to be responsible enough to keep up with their stuff - especially the pair of shoes they wore to someone's house?

I would wait a couple of days and wait to hear from a guest who may have taken them by accident--that's happened at our parties when someone had similar shoes. Was there a pair of shoes left over?

Shoes only get up and walk away if someone's feet are in them.

Someone (or your dog if you have one) took the shoes and since it probably wasn't one of the adults, then your kids did.

Yes, I would pay for them.

Yes and no. I usually don't stop by periodically during parties and check up on my shoes. :teeth:

Sometimes kids and dogs do take things, in which case I wouldn't hold the guest responsible.

I had the whole, shoes are missing thing happen at my house too. Twice actually. Once, I had a playdate with a bunch of moms from a group I was in. There were a couple of moms the main group did not know well who joined us. When a good friend of mine went to leave--she was one of the last--her DDs shoes were missing. Now, this mom had a shoe thing going on and her DDS shoes were always really cute. It wasn't like someone accidentally got mixed up either because there were no extra shoes left! We never saw one of the moms again so we bet it was her.

The other time we had a party with just adults. When someone went to leave, she could not find her shoes. There was a pair there that everyone said did not belong to them but they didn't fit her! Now you have to figure if the ones left didn't fit her, wouldn't the person who took hers have noticed that those ones didn't fit her either??? Very weird,

As for your question, I guess I would feel like I should pay for them, if these people were the only guests at your house at the time.

I instantly thought of Sex and The City also.

But here's the 400 dollar question (hopefully the shoes didn't cost that much). Did she get so loopy that she start leaving pieces of her outfit around the house or did you ask her to leave her shoes by the door?

I think that if I had asked her to leave them behind, I would offer to pay for the shoes. Hopefully they weren't too expensive.

OMG, I think her shoes are at my house!

We had a couple people (family) over for Christmas breakfast. After everyone left I found a pair of shoes. I've asked around, no one says they are missing shoes. I can't for the life me figure out who left here with barefeet and why they aren't claiming them!

It may have been my step neice. I think she was wearing slippers. So maybe she carried shoes in and forgot about them. I emailed her, and she never replied.

As for the o/p I would probably give her a gift card to help cover the cost of the shoes.

If you asked your guest to take her shoes off then yes, you should pay for them. However if she took it upon herself, then no. I cant imagine going to someones house that I dont know very well and taking my shoes off.

No, I would not offer to pay for the shoes. She's an adult, and she was foolish to lose them in such a manner. However, if they turn up, I would absolutely return them to her.
