Instead of buying more memory cards, do you think I should buy the Smartdisk 40GB photobank? I think it's $150.

It depends on what your wanting to do. I think the cards are more secure for mobil transfer, as they don't have the movable parts ect that a had drive does. If you drop a card, it still works just fine. If you drop a hard disk, I would be very scared.

I have a 30 gig delkin picture pad and a 20 gig wolverine,

they are great for extended trips, or when I'm doing an all day photo shoot on location,, generally they travel to my destination and stay in my room when on vacation or in my car on a location photo shoot, that way I can dump my cards at the end of the day when on vacation , or mid day on a large shoot, I would never carry one around wdw or any other place due to the possiblity of damage, I never go anywhere with less than 8 gig of memory cards....and I'm looking to buy 4-8 more

bottom line is you should figure out how much memory you need , then buy double in case of cards going bad, they rarely do, but it's best to be safe...

The only way I would suggest buying such a thing is if you honestly expect to use more than $150 worth of memory cards on a single vacation (and even then, maybe not.) Remember that the hard drive in such a thing will definitely go bad sooner or later, and it'll be another $50 (bare minimum) to replace it.

Memory cards are more reliable, smaller, and much less fuss. (Just set the full ones aside, instead of taking time to dump them to this device, which then needs to be dumped onto your PC when you return home.)

If you were dead set on a hard drive backup, I'd go for one of the cheaper devices that come without a hard drive (like the $35 one) and then add your own drive, doing that would easily save you over $50 and should work just as well.

wow, with a digital SLr shooting , large ,highest resolution, or raw it's easy to use 150 worth of memory in one day....LOL

for me, it's insurance that I have another copy of my pictures besides the memory cards while I'm on vacation. I typically download at the end of the day but I don't erase the cards until I've exhausted all 4 gbs.

I have one too- I picked it up right before our last trip. They had just changed all the FAA restrictions on liquids and we were afraid that security lines would be a mess and didn't want to mess with the laptop. I downloaded my pics at the end of the night and didn't format until the card was about 2/3 full. Now that I'm home, I've transfered all my photos onto it- so they are now backed up to DVD, our normal backup hard drive and the photobank- it's my back up back up. ;)

i have an epson p-2000 and would be absolutely lost without it. a bit expensive but priceless to me.
