We are visiting Volcano bay this week and Mardi Gras concerts on Saturday evening , we will be back in April for 7 days doing Disney and would like to cover Universal + Volcano bay again for 2-3 days ... then plan to return again end of December for 10 days where we would do 3 days at Universal split rest at Disney. I'm thinking it may be worth it for me and my husband and then just pay for kids as needed (we have 2 kids , age 3 & 7)

Thanks for any advice here.

Sounds like an AP could be well worth it, check carefully the blockout dates for the lower level passes for the dates you are traveling, and compare the cost of the AP you need vs tickets. (Seasonal & power APs are blocked out Dec 17-31) I have a preferred AP which gives free parking at the Universal garage, 10% off food & merchandise at the parks and City walk, and some resort restaurants. Not sure if you are staying on Universal property, the state of AP rates at the resorts is in flux right now so you an't count on that.

Yes, at $130 for single park ticket and $550 right now for Preferred pass (as we go to Volcano Bay) , it's a no brainer, we need to go 4.2 times to pay off

Don’t forget the renewal discount if you plan to maintain at least one of those Passes for future visits and Discounts.
I dont know about the Volcano Bay since your children are young and never know about weather for your trip planning. But it is supposed to be a great water park.
Believe or not the children loved the Mardi Gras Parade and most of them caught a lot of beaded necklaces! The performers arrive in area in front of the race through New York streets with Jimmy late afternoon . Lots of fun to see those stilt walkers up close for photos.
Post a few pics or a trip report to let us know what you decided!
Hope you have Fun

It's like the Main Street Electrical Parade with beads.
