Should I Get a GAC or Wheelchair?

I don't know if I should get a GAC card or a wheelchair? Due to a mishap during a surgery, I have a hip that if under too much stress will give way on me. On Our last Trip to WDW I grossly miss judged the size of the parks. My DH wanted to get me a wheelchair from the start, but I did not want to take wheel chair from someone who might need it more then me. Our 1st day we went to MK and took it very slow. I did fine. The next day we were in AK when my hip gave way. I was so embarrassed. After I rested from about 30 min I was still in a little pain, but my hip was able to bear weight. I had no choice at that point and we went a got a wheelchair. I’m in a middle of planning our next trip and I came across something called a GAC. I want to know if this would be a good alternative for me to a wheelchair?

Disney's suggestion for mobility issues is a wheelchair or ECV. It sounds like in your case a wheelchair would really help you. GAC's do not make the distance to each attraction shorter. Sitting in a wheelchair may make your trip more enjoyable. It is nice that you are concerned about taking a chair from someone else. But it truly sounds like you need a chair as well-so I don't think you should feel bad about using a chair.

The official policy concerning mobility and/or stamina situations is to recommend that the person rent a wheelchair or ECV. The GAC will not reduce the distance between attractions and will not reduce wait times or the distance from an attraction entrance to boarding.

it sounds like distance walked is the real problem for you - And a GAC cannot shorten the distance you walk. A wheelchair or ECV sounds like the best choice.

If you can drive an ECV, then I suggest using that - it gives you much more independence.
