I purchased 2 underwater disposable cameras for our upcoming Disney vacation last week at CVS. Like a good CVSer I waited until they went on sale this week! Ha! Anyway, in the meantime, my dh decided to purchase a regular digital underwater camera so I had to return the disposable ones. I took them to the register and explained that I had lost my receipt and they could just put it on a gift card. The cashier said that was fine and went to check the price of the cameras. He came back and refunded the 2 cameras at $14.49 each. I told the cashier that I only paid $9.99 and he told me the sign said $14.49. I again said that I would feel guilty taking an extra $10.00. He again repeated that the sign said they ere $14.49. I gave up and he gave me a gift card for $31.07. I don't know what else I could do. I still feel like I stole $10.00, but I also feel that I did everything I could to explain to him that I only paid $9.99 each for the cameras. Has this every happened to anyone else? Just curious?

I think you are looking for something to worry about. You tried, he didn't listen, what more could you do? Have a great and magical trip! :goodvibes pixiedust:

If it makes you feel better, just spend what you actually spent on the cameras instead of the whole amount. Then destroy the gift card. That way, CVS keeps their money and you won't have the guilty feeling that you got back more than you should have.

I work in law enforcement, and my view is that you did nothing wrong legally. Personally, I don't think you did anything wrong morally because you tried to get the guy to only refund you the proper amount. If you hadn't explained it to him, then I would say you are in the wrong. In this case, you should be guilt-free.

Something similar happened to my Mom not long ago at Coldwater Creek - she had bought several things and as we walked out the door she said the total didn't sound right - she checked and on two pair of pants the computer had run them up as $14.95 instead of $34.95. She went back in and told the cashier and the cashier told her to go on and not worry about it - my Mom went on and on (I was actually a little embarassed...) and the manager came over and when she heard she, too, told Mom that it was their fault and her gain, but they appreciated her telling them and they could fix the computer so it wouldn't happen again. At least she felt better about it then. I would feel guilty, too - but, you tried - not much else you can do - except like pp said - not use the extra $10.

Amen! There really isn't much more you could have done. Why borrow trouble?

The universe threw you a little bonus. Enjoy it.

As long as you told the guy the price you paid, he insisted on giving you more than I think "woohoo, you have more money to spend at CVS". Look at it this way, if they were on sale for less than you paid for them (could happen) and you didn't have the receipt they would have given you less! It works in the wash!

While that seems like a good idea, it will NOT give CVS the money. When a gift card is issued it is an "account payable" - when received it's an "account receivable" - if never redeemed, by LAW the company MUST give the state (in my case, Maine) the money and it goes into the same fund that closed savings accts, life insurance, etc goes in (I'm sure you've all seen the ad's for "found money" - that's the fund) - since it's a gift card and no NAME on it, it goes to the general fund and the state gets it.

Why feel guilty about it? I am a Christian and I am anal about getting the right change back, etc (if I get even a penny extra, I'm back in the store giving it back!). BUT - If you've explained it to them and they still give it to you, it's a gift at that point.

Besides...maybe their computers will only issue it for the "current" price...maybe without a receipt they couldn't adjust the price.

If you feel guilty about it (which is a bit silly since you tried to get them to give it for the correct amount), then why not take the $10 extra, buy a toy with it and put it in the Toys for Tot's box at Christmas time? :confused3

I was just going suggest something similar to the PP, if you don't feel comfortable keeping the extra $10, you could buy some goods to donate to a homeless shelter or give some toothpaste to those places that ship care boxes to the service men and women overseas......

It's really no different than a store giving you a posted price on something even if the computer says differently. It's something stores do. It's good for customer loyalty and you didn't do anything wrong. What you might consider is donating the card with a $10 balance to a charity or something. I know in our church when families are faced with illnesses and driving to be treated or having their children treated, etc., the curch usually asks for gift cards for gas, restaurants, etc. for the family to use.

I had a similar thing recently. I had an item monogrammed. I did not pay when I dropped the item off. When I got there to pick it up, I got out my wallet and the girl said I had already paid. I said no, I didn't. She said they wouldn't have done a custom order without prepayment, that she had waited on me, and that she remembered me paying. I told her I didn't remember paying. I doubt I would have paid cash, and there was no charge on my credit card. They don't record on the sales slip whether you paid or not, since they require prepayment. I am SURE I didn't. She wouldn't take my money...I felt guilty but I did try to pay, and I did tell her I was nearly 100% that I didn't.

Teller gave me too much cash- 40 or so, when I was making a partial deposit. I kept trying to explain to him that he gave me too much. He told me I was wrong to the point of rudeness. I finally walked away with the cash. Checked my account later on (don't recall if it was the next day or what) and the extra was deducted from my account. It was a separate transaction, so it wasn't that I was wrong from the beginning.

I think I would have brought this situation up to the branch manager of the bank!!

Funny yesterday at my local cvs I had something similar. I had 2 coupons for buy an airwick plug in the oil kind. IF you bought the airwick itself it would be free if you bought a refill. Well I had 2 coupons. I went to the aisle & it was really confusing but I found 1 plain unit $1.79 & one with a bonus nightlight & a free refill in the kit about $3.79 included. I bought 2 seperate refills to fulfill the coupon requirements. Well the cashier could not for the life of her understand that she had to ring it up & I would get the 2 units free & only charge me for the refills. She called her manager I explained again & again & again :lmao: 20 min ! Then he said "Oh OK" entered some # & gave me for free one refills ($3.79) & only charged me for one unit $1.79 & the 2nd unit that was a complete kit for FREE because he said I already completed the requirement of having a refill inside the package so I DIDN"T have to by that 2nd refill & pay for it ?!?!. I tried to argue but the line was long. SO I ended up for $1.79 & got free $7.58 free worth of merchandise ! I felt a little guilty but I tried to explain but they were telling me I was dead wrong. Oh well the units have come in handy for my son's yucky bathroom & my husbands yucky garage !:confused3

Happened to us again today. We ordered breakfast at Wendy's. DH immediately picked up the drink. The guy saw there was no drink on the tray, and put another one down. I told him, and he said "Merry Christmas." Oh well.

I think you did what you should by trying to bring the error to the clerk's attention. There really was nothing else you could do unless you wanted to take the cameras back home with you until the next sale and return them then.

As another poster mentioned things all seem to work out in the wash. We order lunch from local delivery places sometimes for my office and take turns picking up the check. I don't know if I am the most unlucky take-out customer in the world but if anyone from the office is going to have something wrong with their order it will be me (forgot my item entirely, gave me the wrong salad dressing, added mushrooms instead of meat?, ordered mango smoothie but gave me coconut instead, etc, etc, it is a running joke in the office how unlucky I am with this, and the others know that if they are calling in the order to certain places to double confirm my order, yet it still happens). Last week was a killer week and we ended up ordering in twice from the same sandwich shop (because we were too busy to leave). I ordered the same thing both days. The first day my co-worker and I had the exact same item and she paid, yet they forgot the cheese only on mine? The second day that week I had the same order again, only this time I paid. When the delivery person brought the food and handed me the check to sign I looked at it and knew the total seemed low. I mentioned this and we looked over the itemized list and realized they didn't charge me for my unsweet ice tea. The deliver person said not to worry about it now. I felt guilty so I gave her a nice tip to cover the difference. After she left and I got to my order I realized they again jipped me on the cheese!!

If it makes you feel guilty to keep the $10, perhaps you could donate it to a worthy cause.

i can't see any reason to feel guilty. you did what you were supposed to, inform the cashier of the facts. if you still feel it is a problem, then call the store and ask for the manager. explain the situation to the manager and see what they say.

personally, i would just move on. you were honest and straitforward, what more can you really do?

a few years ago my brother booked a WDW trip thru AAA and put down a deposit. when he called back to pay the bill, they told him the balance was $0. he called 3 more times and even made a trip to his local AAA office. they insisted the balance was $0. at that point he just counted his blessing (all $2100 of them) and moved on.
