Should I expect compensation?

A couple of details missing here is the mileage on the vehicle and was there any warranty given. If it is high mileage and warranty, you are probably out of luck. Vehicles break down and the higher the miles the more likely for this to happen. It may be something that even the dealer would not see coming.

Even on brand new vehs, it is rare for a dealer to cover incidental expenses like food. If AAA covered the tow, they will not double reim your costs. Again depending on the miles and warranty they may or may not cover a rental. I really doubt it on a veh several years old.

Dealers are really into dealer loyalty, or at the very least brand loyalty. If you have been a long time customer of this dlr, especially if you have previously purchased new, they will be more prone to look for ways to help you out. Honestly, I think the best you can really hope for is a repair at cost. Not saying that is right, but what I would expect after working for a manufacturer in customer assistance

Less than 56,000 miles. I had it towed to my house so I could attempt to have someone I know look at it before letting the dealer look at it.

Reasonable? Sure. Realistic? No.
Good luck!

Lemon Laws only apply to new cars. Did you buy the car "as is"? If so the dealership isnt liable for anything that happens after you buy the car.

Hopefully, this will be resolved quickly. It all depends on the dealership and their sales practices, if you will have a good outcome. Good luck.

that's what i was thinking too, right of recission on a loan is 3 days.

Not in every state.
OP it depends was the car purchased as is or with a warranty? In CT we have a 60 day warranty on cars over $3 or 5k I'm not sure which as long as they are under 7 years old. That said you will get the repair paid maybe the tow but the rest is on you. Lunch, rental car are usually not covered.

Even if purchased "as is", wouldn't the dealer have a legal obligation to tell anything that was wrong with the car? I really don't know, I'm seriously asking.

I'm really curious now....OP, what did you find out about what was wrong with the car? I'm just wondering if it was just really bad luck or if it was something that the dealer may have known about ahead of time.

First off I am sorry you had to deal with that. I am there myself except we are filing under the lemon law (in our state 18 months or newer and under 18,000 miles). It is awful and I have been stuck on the tollway at 11:00 at night with 2 children and 30 weeks pregnant. That said the dealership will do nothing but give a rental car if required and we used our 24 hour towing that was part of our purchase package.

3 day contract cancellation on any contract is a myth. It applies to only very specific situations. For further information check out NOLO.com or contact a lawyer.

Businesses should value their customers and if your dealership does they will do something to work with you but a AS IS car is AS IS. Did you get extended warranty???

Since it is Monday and you purchased yesterday they might not have fully processed your paperwork yet and you would have a better chance of backing out of the deal.

Good luck!!!

Lemon Law or not, she still has three days to cancel the contract. OP, every minute you waste, you're throwing your rights out the window. Keep waiting and you'll be stuck with this car AND whatever car payments you might have.

Check our YOUR state Lemon Law. Get to the dealer NOW and cancel the contract!!! Keep waiting? You'll be the proud owner of a piece of junk that will probably need thousands of dollars of repairs to get it going.

So Let me get this straight.... you have owned the car for about like a day????!!! TELL THEM YOU DON't WANT IT!!! If if died after Two days, I would seriously wonder what else is wrong with it!!
Similar thing happened to my sister. But she was driving it home from the dealership!! and They didn't want to take it back!!!! THAT IS BAD BUSiNESS!!! BAD!!!! :confused3

I Sure hope you get a different car. Arn't there "Lemon" Laws or somthing?

Hugs!!:grouphug:

Ditto this.

I would demand they take it back/trade it.

I really hope the OP sees this and just has it towed back to the dealer.

Here in Wisconsin we have 3 business days to cancel any contract. I really hope you have this option.

THIS is a nightmare about to unfold for you.
RETURN that car, tell them that if they do not give you your money back, you will be filing a complaint with the BBB and call the local tv station about potential FRAUD issues and DOCUMENT everything you do.
What a pain in the neck and what a terrible thing to have to be dealing with. Thankfully, you did not stop and get hit by someone else, my goodness, could have been so much worse.
As for AAA< I would call, complain and get some kind of a credit, refund ect, because that wait is crazy, and they are supposed to UPDATE you if there is any delay anyway...
Sorry, really hope this works out for you! :grouphug:

Boy...there is a lot of misinformation on this thread.

The BBB is not much more than a glorified directory. They hold no power to actually do anything except record complaints, which anyone can make for any reason.

However, threatening to get the local media involved is usually effective when dealing with a company that deals with a lot of advertising and public opinion (like a car dealership). Do you have any consumer advocates on your local news? Sometimes all it takes is a call from them to get the ball rolling. But talk to the dealership FIRST and give them the chance to make it right. They may just surprise you. :hippie:

UPDATE (Sorry, I don't know how to change my title)

It was the fuel pump. By 11:00 a.m. the dealer had already picked it up and was waiting on parts:cool2: I was cruising along until I spoke to a service manager who began balking at reimbursing me my expenses. I politely told him that one way or the other I would be reimbursed. I gave examples, such as court, the local news channel and the BBB. He suddenly put his hands up and exclaimed "Oh, you shouldn't have said that" implying that he WOULD NOT be reimbursing me because I mentioned the news channel..:scared1:

I'm faxing (on my employers letterheard (an attorney) my expenses tomorrow and expect payment asap

BTW-in RI the lemon law only applies if the car is in the shop for the SAME EXACT PROBLEM 3 times or more...I also beleive we do not have 3 days to cancel a contract:mad: But actually I understand fuel pumps can go without warning, so I'm just going to accept that for now

You really need to find out for your state but why do you think you should be reimbursed for your lunch....you would have had to eat out anyway since you were on a 'day trip'. Granted it might not have been Starbucks but you would have been out lunch money anyway.

Good luck...sorry it happened to you in the heat and with the kids!

I would balk too if you expected me to cover your lunch. Eating there, at that time, was YOUR choice. You can NOT expect that to be covered and there would be no legal reason it would be covered. That is all you.

AAA took care of your towing. That is a part of the service. I really think you are reaching when it comes to wanting that money as well. That is why you HAVE AAA.

And many companies and employees would stop speaking to you when you start the threats. Threatening people is not the way to get what you want most of the time. Good luck. I doubt they will now be willing to work with you and will do it line item and not do anything beyond what they are required to do.

Yeah. Good luck with all those threats. The media is not going to care after the merchant points out how quickly they fixed the car, same for the BBB

Honestly, this comes across as "what can I take you for". You want reimbursement for a towing bill you did not pay?

Does your employer KNOW what you did with their letterhead?

OP, you are way off base in your expectations. I'm glad they are taking care of the repair for you, but to demand more and make threats is just wrong.

Dealers help customers out when they are not required to do so by law to gain the goodwill of the customers. In this case they are throwing away money. You have now shown you will not walk away a happy camper. There is no way by law they owe reim for those extra expenses. Those costs are small potatoes and are your responsibility. You bought a USED CAR with around 56k...parts will fail. That's just life...fuel pumps fail.

Folks that carry on like you have just make it hard for a business to ever offer assistance. Why should they? You will walk away unhappy no matter what. Dont be greedy.

I was wondering this also..........

I don't see anything in this that the media would be interested in. If it were a new car and the dealer refused to take responsibility, it might be a consumer affairs type "what to do" story. You take some risk buying a used car, and that statement is coming from someone who always buys used cars.

You've still not said what kind of extended warranty you have. I would think it would be usual to have towing and rental car covered (would be capped, unfortunately) but can't imagine lunch being taken care of. Do you have AAA plus by any chance? There are some extra benefits there.

When will your car be fixed and ready? You might politely add...since the car broke down so soon after purchase/leaving the dealership, then perhaps they could reimburse/give you peace of mind/compensate you for your stress, anxiety and uncertainty of the vehicles performance from this moment on with an extended warranty...even if it were a 1 year/10,000 type warranty.
