Should I consider a stroller for 6yo?

For people who don't already have a Disney visa I think they are running a promotion this year for signing up you get 25.00 credit I think... Look it up. I think mine has a 6 mo interest free perk when you book a disney vacation on it too and when you do that you get the preferred seating etc. They have a special phone number for booking.

You also get the disney rewards program.
Also 10% off merchandise but I think that only applies on purchases over 100 and there may be restaurant savings also at disney

It depends on your kid. My youngest has the energy of the Energizer Bunny. She can out walk any of my kids. She is also fearless and rides every ride. She teases her older siblings when they won't ride TOT, etc.

I have to say I LOVED when the day came and I didn't need to bring a stroller. I think it's a pain to navigate through crowds. I hate finding a place to ditch it between rides. I don't know if it's the same at DL, but at WDW your stroller was ALWAYS in a different place when you returned to it. So much of our time was searching through stroller corrals.

i thought the disney visa perk was free stroller rentals? I thought that's what I read. has it changed?

we have a single but I think it might be beneficial on some days to have a second one for the park.

* nevermind...looks like it's changed

No I have had one for about 5 years unless you are talking before that then it hasn't changed. The normal rental on those is 15 dollars a day I think so it's a great little perk.

Normal charge is $15/day. I just payed it all upfront on the first day and all I had to do each day was show my receipt and they just checked the day off and away I went.

When we go in May we will have a 5 & 6 yr old and just be buying a couple of cheap umbrella stollers. The kids won't be in the strollers, but we will be using them to cart backpacks, clothes etc for 8 people.

My DS5 would NOT go into the stroller for the first couple of days, he said it was for babies and I regretted bringing the stroller, but he was really dragging, and the walk to HOJO at night would take forever, trying to convince him to keep walking. We eventually convinced him to go in the stroller and he went the rest of the trip. He was a much happier child after that.

I'll join you on the opposing team!!
WDW, sure, I would get a stroller for my little ones. It is so big and we were walking upwards of 10 miles a day. Disneyland, however, is much smaller. even on a commando day, we don't break 8 miles.
Also, the walkways are much smaller, and the crowds more intense. i am so glad I don't have to try to push a stroller through Adventureland after dark anymore! If you hit a bottleneck (like leaving Fantasmic or leaving after the fireworks) others will have no problem trying to jump over your stroller Jack-Be-Nimble style!
If you are worried about jackets, again, it is a quick jump to the front of the park to the locker area. Or, at 6, you could pack your daughter a small backpack with her own sweatshirt, some snacks, bottled water, etc. I decided last year I was done being the family's packmule, and started packing them their own bags. It works GREAT!!!!
If you decide you DO need a stroller, I can't shout it loud enough to skip the cheapies!!! It will be abandoned after the first day when the wheels stop turning properly! We used this type for my kids, but they were out of it by age 5 (when we bought the Joovy Caboose for WDW)
http://www.amazon.com/Jeep-Weather-...YL4Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295720557&sr=8-2
and at 5, it was a tight fit. But it did the job.
Good luck either way!

I can't stand "cheapie" umbrella strollers ~ they're teeny - they look like they're made for children to stroll their baby dolls/stuffed animals, your 6 year old won't fit - they're so short that unles your under 5"3 you're back will be aching from bending over to push it.

I agree. I hate the.cheep ones.

Absolutely! When we went to WDW with DD7, we used a stroller. She didn't really sit in it much, but it was great for all our stuff. Then you won't feel like such a pack mule. Have fun!

I'm 5'1 and too tall for an umbrella stroller!

Hate those cheapy things! You might consider a nice jogging stroller. My almost 6 yr old DS goes on daily walks with me. He starts on walking next to me and then ends up riding in the stroller playing on my iphone, while I get in some good exercise!:thumbsup2

This is THE ONLY time we use a stroller other then at Disney.

We LOVE our jogging stroller. It's a larger then average one, with HUGE tires/wheels and when pushing DS in it, he feels weightless. It's amazing! Plus, the height/weight limits are such that even at almost 6 yrs old, 50lbs and 50 inches, he will still have plenty of room for years to come!

He starts out in it at the beginning of the day for the treck from HoJo's to the parks. He will usually get out once we get to our first ride and will probably stay out and walking within each land. However, when crossing the park we always have him riding....just easier and faster. That way DH and I don't have to worry about where he is and him keeping up or getting lost in the crowds. And then of course, he will ride in it from Disney back to the HoJo's and he always falls asleep. By the time we leave the gates, he's out! Now, why in the world would I want to haul this sleeping child back to the hotel without the comfort of a stroller??;)

Plus it makes a great resting spot for our stuff!:rolleyes1

Actually, they did used to be free. I signed up for my Disney card in 2008 and at that time they were free.

Disney has a site that explains all of the current discounts/deals avail to card holders. Here's a link. http://disneyrewards.disney.go.com/credit/themeparkperks.html

I know at a few of the restaurants you had to use the card to pay for your meal. So not sure if paying cash and just "flashing" your card would actually get you the discount...Maybe this has changed since the last time I was there? I know I will definately ask about, since I try and pay cash while on vacation...

I think you've already decided to use the stroller, but I wanted to mention that I have a Joovy Caboose (one of the sit and stand type strollers) and without fail, my two year old falls asleep in the front and my six year old falls asleep in the back almost every night when we're at Disney. We would have to spend much less time at the parks without the stroller!

We actually fit both my eight and six year old on the platform in the back on some trips across the parks, if we're trying to move quickly. Great exercise for me!

Sorry to hijack a little but is the Joovy Caboose easy to maneuver with all the crowds and tight spaces at DLR? It might be something we will need in the future but it looks like it could be hard to steer. The stroller we have now is the baby jogger city mini which is super easy to steer, even with one hand. Just wondering for future reference. :goodvibes

Yes for meals and merchandise I believe you do have to indeed charge the card but the stroller perk is different I am almost certain you just have to show it. I remember doing this around 2005 when I rented one for my grand daughters to share they were 5 and 6 at the time now they are 10,11. They charged me 5 a day at that time. Maybe you had something special on your card. I don't know.

Hmmm....I'm not sure?? I remember printing out the page that shows all the discounts offered and this went in my Disney notebook for our trip in Aug 2008. I clearly remember free stroller rentals as being one of the perks. Mainly because we were wrestling with the idea of what stroller to bring if any or just getting the free ones from Disney. Since we were flying, I didn't want to have to travel with a stroller but DH won the fight...saying DS would be more comfy and we would need it for the walks to and from the park. Funny...how I remember an entire arguement regarding a stroller 3 yrs ago but can't remember what I had for dinner last night!

Either way, at $5 it's still a good deal.

But I am wondering if they got new strollers?? When we thought of renting one, they had old, small joggers. At the time, I was concerned that my 3 yr old wouldn't fit and at almost 6 yrs, I KNOW he wouldn't fit now.

we have a baby jogger city mini (and had the double version last time we went to DL) and LOVE it. It's perfect for the parks. lots of space to store things, HUGE hood to block sun or rain, flat reclining seat for kids to sleep in and occasionally for both kids to ride in, and amazingly easy to maneuver (I can easily turn it 360 in place with one hand) It also fold pretty small and super easily (a true one hand fold) We had trouble fitting larger double strollers in rental cars...this was perfect even in a compact. I anticipate no problems fitting the single version in a compact car this trip.

I am 5'2 and can't deal with umbrella strollers. I have to bend to push it and they are hard to push anyway. plus not a lot of space to store things.

Disney Visa used to offer free stroller rentals up until maybe a year or year and a half ago. I remember because that was the main reason i got the disney visa. Then we ended up just bringing our own stroller and sometime after that is when they switched the disney visa discount to be 50% off stroller rental. They haven't gotten new strollers since we started bringing our DS a few years ago (not sure what they had before that) but yes they are the jogging-type stroller, sort of a teal color. I've heard of people putting their bigger kids in them though. DS is 5 and can easily fit in it but he's not very big for his age.

I was just digging around the disney visa perk page>>> NO stroller perk is currently listed >>> arg :(
