Should I buy a DVD recorder or TiVo?

I really don't know much about either one of these but I'm tired of the VHS thing and am trying to find out anything I can -- your help is appreciated!

We wanted to add another receiver to our home to have enough TV's on dish, so we found a TIVO receiver for only $10 more than a regular receiver and we got it. We just love it! It is really user friendly and it even records things it thinks we will like from what we have been viewing on live TV! We can set it up to always record a series every time it is on; we just do a search for like Stargate SG-1 and it pulls up all the channels and shows it has and then we can select the station and it will record every show every week. If we don't like what it recorded, we just delete it in a split second. It is really cool! If we are watching the Oscars and just have to get up and go potty, we can pause live TV to go to the potty and not miss a thing! There are other things it does, but we just got it going on Saturday, so we are still learning. I am really impressed and we only paid $89.00 for the receiver vs. $400 or so for a DVD recorder. Someday, we will get one, I know, but not right now. Oh, you only pay $5.00/mo extra on your Direct TV bill.

Go for the TiVo! I absolutely love mine.

It's one of very few products I own that really lives up to all the hype about it. It has been so convenient, and I just don't think I could go back to watching TV without it very easily at all. It has so many fantastic features like season passes (records every episode of your favorite shows), wishlists (you can use wishlists to search for shows with your favorite actors, in your favorite genre, etc.), and much more.
