Ok....When you think of Disney...You think of family..Right?

I was looking into booking a cruise for 2005....a FAMILY suite...
They consider my son ( 18) at an adult rate...staying in my room...
Is that the way way other cruise lines are??? Do they charge more for an 18 year old staying in your room?? If so. I guess I shouldn't be mad at DCL.

I guess I'm just upset that Disney considers CHILDREN at age 10 an ADULT...for park tickets, buffet meals, etc. I don't think a 10 year old should be considered an ADULT!!( unrelated to the cruise, talking about DisneyWorld)

So, does other cruise lines charge a 18 year old staying in the same room as an adult rate?
4 night cruise..March 27th 2005 Family suite is $5379.25..WOW!!
Hey, Don't flame me...This will be my second DCL cruise, once w/ just my wife and I, and this time w/ only two of the kids.... I just can't afford over $5,000.00 for 4 night cruise....any other recomandations for other ships???? Would like to leave out of Port Canaveral....

Are there two parents travelling and 3 "children"? If so you should get the 3/4/5th passenger rate for the children. Depending on their age there is a child rate and then an adult rate which I think kicks in at age 13. If there is only one parent travelling then you must pay adult fare for two people and the rest are under the 3rd/4th passenger rate. Other cruise lines operate the same way. I have never understood why Disney would limit their lower categories to four people. For a family oriented company they forget that there are alot of families with 3 children out there. Carnival offers 5 in a cabin on a lot of their lower categories. You may want to check them out. I love DCL but the prices are hardly for the "average" family.
The park admission changes at age 10 since most people over that age are able to ride all the attractions. That being said I have never had anyone ask for identification at park entry so if you have a small child you may be able to get them in as a nine year old. Maybe someone else can comment on that?

I would consider 18 an adult, even if they don't always act like it.

The standard age for an adult rate IS age 18. Yep, this is commonplance in the adult industry.

I understand your frustration with the park rates though!

Yes, DCL state that I would have to pay, and adult rate for myself, wife, and my 18 year old son...full adult rate for three passengers in the same room.....The I also have a 15 year old going , and a 9 year old at a lesser rate.....
ALL of us in the same room......

Plus remember, that 18 year old is going to eat like an adult. They can pack away the food! :D

The extra adult fee over what you would have paid for them if they were a child is $200 I believe.
If it were just the room but it is more than that. It is the meals, the entertainment they'd attend. I don't think it is out of line.

Heck we are going to Vegas this summer and they charge per person in the room and my daughter is 11. I called to enquire and it is "by the person" whether they are 18, 39 or 5 years old. So we end up paying for my wife, 11 year old daughter and myself. This apparently is common practice in Vegas.

Cheers,
Grumbo

This is off the topic, but it is full fare for an person regardless of age if he/she is the second passenger.

Did you consider getting two rooms? (connecting or ajoining)

I agree with you about the ticket prices for WDW, but at least there are more things to do for the kids. Some other parks that I have been to charge more with a lower age limit, and still limited to what the kids can do due to weight or height.

I think you must have misunderstood something. I don't think that there are any rooms (including Category 1's) where you pay a full adult fare for the third person. There is a reduction in price after the first two persons/adults in a given stateroom, albeit the reduction is larger for younger passengers.

Hey din,

I'm having to pay full fare for my DD11 since there is only 1 adult and 2 children in my room. So adult fare for 1st/2nd and child fare for my 3rd (DS10). Oh well.

I bet you could save money if you got adjoining lower category rooms. Try getting a category 8 for you and your spouse with a category 11 right across the hall for the kids. Your total would probably go substantially down.

This is from allseastravel.com- it looks like for the 4 night you should only have to pay an extra $50 for the 18 year old- I think the reason the quote comes in so high is the date March 27- you would save over $1000 traveling 2 weeks prior or 1 week later.
Prices assume 3rd/4th/5th passengers are 3-12 years old at time of sailing. Add $50 to the price above for each 3rd/4th/5th passenger 13 years of age or older. Children under 3 pay only port charges.

Do kids have to pay full adult rates at age 13? That is what I thought (paying the adult 3rd/4th/5th passenger rate).

Or is there a different rate between age 13 to 17?

Welcome to the world of traveling with an 18 year old child. It's frustrating, but it will happen to you everywhere. When we went to NYC with the family last year, I told her to act like she was 17. Kids 17 and under stayed in the room with 2 paying adults free, 18 yo's have to pay an additional adult in the room charge. Go figure, like she's any more mature cause she's 18 instead of 17! I wonder how long she can pretend to 17, ya think I can pass that off till she's 25?!?

Actually, according to the cruisecritic boards, some cruise lines charge a flat rate for infants/toddler/youth,etc., and it is the same rate as an adult. Based upon what I've read over on cruise critic, DCL is one of the few lines who does discount for kids.

We are also going on that date with 5 in the family. Shop around to get the best rate we booked through cruise.com for $4800. Our kids are 14, 13, and 8. The 13yo will just be past his birthday but I did end up paying more for him, about $50.:sunny: Also Six Flags no longer prices by the age they price by the height over 48 inches is considered adult so if your kids are tall for thier ages you will pay more:earseek:

Why would you be upset with Disney?

If I (37 years old) travel with my parents, should I get charged a child rate as well?

I can't afford a BMW....should I be upset with BMW or the car dealership?

Disney cruises are expensive. But I wouldn't be upset with them for charging what the market will bear. As we've discussed, they don't have a casino to subsidize their profit. They are a corporation in the deal to make money. Might as well be upset at your boss for not paying you enough to afford it, or yourselves for having three children to start with.

Hi Doug,

I think that this is Easter so, that would be the biggest problem. DCL charges full price for the 1st/2nd passengers (regardless of age) and then you are charged for the 3rd/4th/5th passengers. Under 12 or 13 is one rate, and then 12 or 13 and older are an additional $50 on that rate. I did some quick checking for you and this is what I came up with.

All Seasons Travel 3/20 $4939
3/27 $5229
4/3 $3849

DCL 3/20 $5599
3/27 $5889
4/3 $4699

Hope this helps.

If I am remembering correctly, Carnival charges a 3rd/4th person rate not dependent on the age...
