Should I be freaked out about this?

Some creepy guy just knocked on my door and told me his company was new in town and tried to sell me home repairs and a central air unit.

As I was closing the door, he told me he worked for SEARS and showed me a binder with what looked like a Sears flyer on the inside.

I live in Philadelphia, and Sears has been in my neighborhood longer than I've been alive. I'm starting to get really freaked out about this.

Is this something that a big company like Sears would do? Or should I be legitimately afraid I'm going to be robbed?

I guess you can call sears, see if they are canvassing the area in this way. What kind of car did he drive? did you get the plate?

I never go to the door unless I'm expecting someone.

People who do installs for Sears are independent subcontractors. So it's not unlikely that he does work "for" Sears but he is not employed by Sears. No need for concern.

I normally wouldn't be, but my DH isn't home, and I don't live in a very 'OK' area. PLUS the guy came by at like 8PM! Don't these people come around in the afternoon - 5PM area?

Door to door guys come later in the evening. They want to get people after they get home from work.

First of all, you didn't let him inside your house, right? Hard to case the joint if you can't really see anything!

However, there's no harm in calling the non-emergency police line and reporting your concerns that he may not be legit.

Last year a man selling insurance stopped at my house at about 10am. He had a big black binder, but there was nothing on the outside. I said I would take a brochure or card and look it over, but he didn't have any brochures or anything he could leave with me. He was just very socially awkward and the whole time he was standing at my door he kept looking around me into my house. As soon as he left I just got the creeps and convinced myself that he was going to come back and rob or kill me.

I felt totally ridiculous, but I called the police. I told them I was probably being paranoid but they said they would check it out. An officer came by my house a short while later to tell me that he spoke with the man, looked in his car, and verified that he did actually work for an insurance company. He was new, so he didn't have any business cards yet. The officer also said he thought the guy was awkward and creepy, so I didn't feel quite so crazy for calling the police.
