Should I be concerned about UY with a resale?

I'm new to this...so bear with me. I'm considering purchasing a resale and trying to figure out if I need to be concerned about the UY I purchase. I understand the basics of UY. I'm just trying to figure out why I would want one UY over another.

UY is no less important with resale than with direct purchase. The primary reason for picking a UY month is to be able to be outside the 4 month banking deadline if you need to cancel.
The easiest rule is to pick a month that you do not travel in the preceeding 3 months.

Agree. We did not consider use year and we have a June use year. The problem is, I can book my Spring Break vacation now (at home resort) or another resort in Sept/Oct. But, the one year something did happen, we were past our banking deadline of January, so we ended up taking a Memorial Weekend trip, otherwise, would have lost the points on June 1.

This is the first I've heard about a banking deadline...can someone explain that in a little more detail to me?

Take some time and scroll through some of the threads. Banking and UY are discussed several times a week.

Banking is to transfer unused DVC points from the current year to the following year. If you could not or chose not to stay at a DVC resort this year, you could transfer your points to next year.

A given set of points may be banked only one time and banking is not reversible. Further, points may not be banked during the last four months of your UY. Our UY is October so we cannot bank from June 1 through September 30. If we scheduled a vacation during those months and had to cancel it, we could not bank the points and would have to use them by September 30 or lose them.

Unless you know you'll be going to Disney the same time of year for the next 30 years, no. It's not something to worry about.

That said, if you are looking at two otherwise identical contracts, might as well go for the one whose use year works best with your next few year's travel plans.

PS - keep in mind that banking windows only matter for current year points. Banked or borrowed points can't be banked

Having a UY that falls right before your typical travel offers the most flexibility in what you can do with points if you have to cancel a trip, want to change a trip that will use less points, or are using borrowed points.

Since you bank current UY points for use in the next UY within the first 8 months, traveling during this timeframe can be good.

Of course, if you don't travel the same time every year or will be traveling all different times, then it becomes less of an issue as some of the trips will fall outside the deadline.

We travel in August since I teach (and will be for at least the next 10 years) so we chose a June UY. Because I am traveling only in month 2 of my UY, if I ever had to cancel that trip or even wanted to downgrade the room type (31 days in advance--less than that and there is a whole different set of rules for points) , I could do so easily without having to worry. I could bank points and if there were borrowed points, it gives me a long time to use them up. But, even when we are retired, our primary travel will be fall or early winter and June UY works well for these travel times as well.

If you travel toward the end of the UY and want to make changes beyond your banking window, it is not that easy, especially if you have borrowed points and have to cancel.

Good luck!

UY is important for some, not for others. IF you travel mostly one time of year, make sure to buy a UY that falls just before the earliest you'd travel. That way you'd have more time and options if you have to change or cancel. If you visit at all different times, UY doesn't matter as much but can still be an issue.

We have been pretty much every time of the year except late Jan-early Feb. For us it really doesn't make any difference we rarely have the chance to bank at this point. Right now I have 2 UY though which can get a little confusing
