Should Folks staying in a 1Br+ DVC get free access to laundry facilities?

Is the hallway laundry facilities in a DVC resort only free for those in a studio?

  • Yes, those laundry rooms are for studio folks only

  • No, all DVC members should get free access

We are staying at VGC as we speak (it's chilly here, but having a great time). We managed to get stoaked on Grizzly River Run and took a quick run back to the room to use the clothes dryer.

We had so much to dry that I decided to run down to the laundry room here. Folks staying on dvc points need to get tokens from the front desk to use the dryers for free. They refused to give me the tokens since I am in a 1br and have a machine in my room. I did not put up a fuss and simply came to the laundry room and paid the $2.

What say you? Should the laundry be free for me or is the facility expressly for studio DVC guests? (I write the from the laundry room on my iPad)

I applaud your restraint. I would have been unhappy with that response from the front desk. Our dues pay for DVC facilities. I wonder where it is written that only studios can use the free laundry facilities.

Anyone staying DVC should be able to use them. As stated above, we are all paying the dues that support those. However, as someone who stays in studios and has had to wait on the machines since there are so few, I would appreciate them not being monopolized by those who could use the machines in their rooms. (Not saying you were doing that...just know what the wait on those machines can be like sometimes!)

Unless the machine in a 1 bedroom + is not working, I don't think the common laundry rooms should be used by anyone other than those in a studio. There are a limited supply.

I was the only one in the facility. And mine was the only machine in use.

But I would agree that studios should have preference over other users.

Where does it state this in DVC rules?
I am glad we usually stay at BWV where tokens are not required. We have only used the common facilities once in 10 years. But I pay $5000+ in dues and I don't expect any hassle if I need to use the common laundry facilities for some reason.

I won't let a $2 issue get me wound up. Heck today I saw a decent scratch on my car rental. I picked the car up in the pouring rain at nite - so I didn't see it. I will have pick up some rubbing compound and see if a bit of rubbing will avoid an issue at drop off.

Back to DCA. Later all. Will be interesting to see where this votes ends up.

It doesn't state one way or the other. It's my opinion.
I wouldn't inconvenience another by using the common facilities because I don't want to be inconvenienced by having to wait for all of my stuff to dry in my unit.

What he said. I have a washer and dryer in my villa. That's the one my dues are paying for. Otherwise, you should be able to knock on your neighbor's door and ask to use their washer and dryer.

I voted for all members. I can't imagine that there would be a lot of times when someone in one of the bigger villas would be in need of them.

But, since the cost is paid by all member's dues, then everyone who has a reason should be entitled to it.

and I'm with them. I would be very peeved if as a studio occupant I went to use the facilities and they were all in use because someone was trying to save time but otherwise had a unit in their villa.

Entitlement mentality is not a reason and apparently Disney agrees.

I personally feel that they should be limited to use by those in a studio. To say that everyone pays the fees for them is the same as someone who is staying in a studio saying that someone in a 1br or larger should let them use their washer/dryer since they pay fees to help maintain them.

I confess that it wouldn't even occur to me to go there if I had my own machines in-unit. Though, honestly, I'd probably rather wait than schlep/babysit.

I voted for studios only because of an experience I had at BCV. A woman was doing two (count them 2!!) loads of laundry in the 4th floor laundry room because the units in her villa were too noisy! I don't mean to sound snarky, but I had to stay up until 2 am to finish my one load :confused3

Most of our stays are in studios and I count it as a surprise when I don't have to wait for a machine... however I believe the front desk was wrong to tell you you can't use the laundry facilities for free. The only time I was a little steamed at anyone from a larger unit using the facilities was from a report here on the DIS of someone who had decided to use up a number of driers to dry their pool towels. To me, that sounded nuts.

Q: Are the washer & drier in the unit at VGC of the stackable kind? Those do not, and should not be forced to, hold as much laundry as the units in the laundry rooms. (That's a fantastic way to break them and increase the maintenance cost.)

A 2br unit you can have up to 8 people - to run a tiny washer/drier for that much laundry could take an entire day or more. Just one change of clothes from just 6 people will more than fill a small stacked washer/drier. I'm sure Disney would rather we're out spending money than camped out in a unit babysitting clothes. Sounds to me like the person who made up this rule at VGC doesn't do the laundry in their household.

I don't think someone on a DVC reservation should be prohibited. That said, I personally wouldn't haul my clothes to a laundry room if I had a working washer dryer in my room.

I love the idea of tokens, so wish WDW would do that, so that freeloaders, not DVC members at all, would stop using them.

Why does Disneyland do all the right stuff as far as guests are concerned. :confused3

As to the question, not sure whether it should be studios only but if I had a washer/dryer in my room can't imagine any reason to go to the laundry.

I personally wouldn't want to haul laundry down to the laundry room and babysit it, which is one of the things I really like about the 1 bedrooms for longer trips. However, I think anyone who can use their key to get into the DVC laundry room should be able to use it.

I agree, the thought of using the machines in the laundry room has never occurred to me. But it would be nice to have that option if it was necessary...I just don't think it would happen for us on any regular basis. It only seems fair, though, to let members use it regardless of unit size as long as there is space available.

And, hello St. Paul! How's the weather down there? ;)
