Should declining housekeeping be discontinued for a bit?

Just thinking about the virus - is it sanitary for guest to decline housekeeping for a period of time? Shouldn't we be doing more cleaning?

I'm not going, but just thinking about the topic. :)

Might actually help lessen the spread . If housekeepers are in all rooms and hit a virus room than proceeds to spread it to all other rooms they clean. Sure ideally they are disinfecting all surfaces but ... We know how well that goes.

I didn't think of it that way!

Although one would hope that they've been instructed to clean more thoroughly during all of this...

I've thought about that too. I get that it's an effort to spread their housekeeping staff out a bit more, but there are some people out there who are gross and nasty, let's be honest. Rooms that people are staying in and not being even given a daily once over for a week or more to me seems like it could create more maintenance issues or things needing to be replaced sooner because they lacked attention for long spans of time between room turnovers. People could be spilling sodas on the rug and letting it seep in and leave it there for days, or leaving half eaten food all over the place attracting bugs, or all sorts of other things. Many people do not clean up after themselves in any way. That's not even considering the virus issue...

Someone asked this same question in a different thread and honestly, while I am not going to ever decline for other reasons, here's my thought on that thread

It's you in the room and you alone. So you are only spreading stuff to yourself and your family, who you would have already been around and touched, etc. So what is there to be concerned about?
And experts, real MDs not Internet MDs, LOL, have said it can't live on surfaces more than a few minutes.
But still, if I'm the only one (or my family) to be in the room then not sure how it matters. I'm the one that brought in whatever is in there. Right?

As for the rooms not being cleaned because of lack of attention and spilling soda on the floors or something, Housekeeping sends someone to do a safety check basically on the room once a day. Someone will come in and walk through the room and just verify that everything is ok. If they see things like soda just laying on the floor i'm sure they would get someone to clean it up and possibly have a word with the guest. I've stayed a couple of different times and opted out of the housekeeping. This actually worked to our benefit one trip as my husband got sick and basically stayed in bed one day. While we were in the room the person said they just needed to come in and check on things and that they do this daily.

You're right, I forgot about the safety checks. We didn't decline housekeeping on our last trip with the kids so we didn't have that and then on our couples trip we were barely in the room so I never saw them then either.

These would be reasons to NEVER offer it not really applicable to the current virus issues. Right?

I agree with AngiTN—regardless of whatever virus is going around, the only person who will be bringing in any virus is the guest(s) staying in the room, in which case you and your travel party have already been exposed. Properly cleaning and sanitizing BETWEEN guests is far more important.

I declined housekeeping the last couple trips because I found it to be unnecessary—one trip I was by myself, and the next I was only travelling with one other person. I don’t create that much mess! I’m more likely to keep housekeeping services if I’m with a larger travel party.

I guess it doesn't matter, but for myself personally I feel you can never be too clean!

Please, come in and disinfect! :D

I replied in the other thread, but sharing this here to so people can access accurate information on how long it can live on surfaces.

This is incorrect.

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
