Well, my husband's cousins who first fled Fidel have now FLED Venezuela...I think they would disagree with you.

What do real people know? If Chavez hates President Bush he is A-OK with some people. ;)

Maybe we can send the UN to Quebec?

Chavez claims to be a supporter of human rights, yet he has aligned himself with Iran, which by all accounts has a horrendous human rights record. Chavez has cracked down on his country's media and seems primed for a power grab. The man is no saint.

Thanks for the respect ! :)

The united Arab emirat, Saudi Arabia just to name two are "friends " of the USA. So Your governement is aligned with countries with horredous human right record as well. Try to find a christian church or a women who can vote there and then we will be able to have a discussion about the friend countries are keeping. The Shaw ( spelling?) of Iran used to be good friend of the US and his governement was far from being a human right shinning light ! So was Pînochet in Chile .

Venezuella does not need The US or Canada to tell them who they should be friends with . Both our countries have some friend that i would not bring home to my mother for diner !

Do we need to be carefull with what is going on Venezuela ? Of course. But so far , the governements that were put in place with our complecity have just managed to keep the poor poor and the rich richer. Venezuella seem , so far , to have manage to send to school about one million more poor children then before his presidency , and thousand of adults illeterate learn to write and read. Chavez managed to impose that strores and market sell product produced by the people of venezuella , giving work to thousands of venezualans , and by turned whole favelas in cities where people can live with pride , with healthcare provided by cuban doctors sent by cuba in exange of petrol.

I understand all about how "communism" first seem to be a good choice , lure the poor , and then turns into a nightmare. But socialism does not need to be an ugly word ( difficult for Americans to understand).

Again , I am not ready to give Chavez a free pass. I think that we should keep a very strong watch on him. But , so far , it seems to be working. Not by our north american standards ( profits and corporation are kings ) but by there own standards.

I think that Toto was charmed along with many of the members of the UN. Chavez is right about one thing. Get the UN out of the USA so we don't have to host these decadent, depraved thugs and dictators. That's the first step in protecting our borders. I wouldn't give the America hating, President bashing, human rights violators another dime to run that worthless and decrepit organization.
I agree! Getting the UN out of the US was the only sane line in that whole blathering crazed speech.

Hi, Rita...we've discussed before our mutual hatred for Fidel. HOw are you?

toto2,

I admire the way you state your opinion and explain its basis. Your arguments are in sharp contrast with the name callers (Chavez seems to be one also!) and UN bashers who don't address the substance of the issue at hand.

Thank you BunsenH ! You make me feel a little less alone :)

I agree thet Cavez looks like a chihuahua barking at the big tiger when he speaks about President Bush and the USA. Let just hope that the the big tiger will not do the "democratic" thing and get rid of the chihuahua !

I know, but they make my blood pressure go up! My thought has always been: If you think communism is so great, go LIVE in a communist society. THEN let us know what you think.

I need to learn more about the subject before I can say I agree with you or not. :teeth: However, your thoughtful presentation was worth noting.

Hummmm.

So far , Venezuela seem to be more of a socialist country then communist. And It is not becaus some of us want to have a society where people are a bit more equal , where the governement is there to help it 's people instead of helping there corporate friends ( canada is guilty of that too) that we want to run to Cuba too. I personnaly think that a just middle is the thing to strive to !

When was the last time this american administration did something for the american worker ? Americans are so far still buyin more stuff from china and other emerging countries than from the states because most american companies are now producing there stuff in cheap labor coutry , ripping the amerin worker from work that could be done in the USA. Again , this administration has done nothing ( and a few administration before that I guess !)

No, don't let it get to you. It's not worth it. Your husband's family really knows what it's like. They lived it.

There is nothing that a person that may have read a few books or articles on communism/socialism can say that will change my point of view and experiences. I lived it for almost 15 years. My knowledge and facts are based on what I lived and experienced, not what I heard or read somewhere.

“The United States empire is on its way down and it will be finished in the near future, inshallah," Chavez

"Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you" Kruschev

The USA has seen these type of people before, and they are delt with in time.

Chavez has a lot of bravado when he is sitting on a black gold mine. Make his oil insignificant, and he will be insignificant.

The guy in the WH must be the most dislike US President of all time.
First, 50% of the voters don't like him. Second, there's the outspoken 180 non-aligned nations around the world. Third, the balance of countries who are too chicken to say what they think because they depend on a handout in the form of aid.

"George W. Bush, in his unprovoked attack against the sovereign nation of Iraq, openly violated the UN Charter, to which the US is a signatory. The Charter's core principles contained in Article 2(4) and Article 51 prohibit one nation from attacking another except in self-defense or with the authority of the U.N. In effect, George Bush launched an unlawful use of force against persons and property.
The invasion launched by George W. Bush was heralded by the most frightening and powerful use of force and military violence in recent history. His Shock and Awe bombardment of Baghdad was designed to intimidate and coerce the government as well as the civilian population of that nation to change its existing leadership. That, in itself, was a political objective.
The purpose of the invasion and ensuing occupation of Iraq was to replace the existing dictatorship with an American-backed form of democracy that would not permit the emergence of a government headed by the majority Shia religious leadership. These motives were unquestionably political and social.
59 million people in this country voted for a terrorist."
