I answered unsure.

On the one hand, it'll send out a powerful message and will inevitably discourage a quantity of people.

On the other hand, all you need to thwart the wall is a ladder, a shovel or a little boat to go around it with. That's my only major concern - that it could be a waste of money compared to other measures.

However, I struggle to think of any other measures that would be more effective, so I'm erring on the side of "yes, build it".

It's the USA's right to do so on it's own land, of course, no matter what the the Mexican dude says.

My only other concern is for the illegals who have a rock solid reason for trying to seek asylum without the means to do so legally. However, Mexico isn't exactly the most oppressed or impoverished nations in the world...

Etc.

If they did build it, they'd have to make it impenetrable. Like 20 feet tall and solid brick. ;)

It would need to go deep too to stop people from digging under it. You'd need a good border patrol as well to make sure that people don't climb over it and an efficient Coast Guard to ensure that no-one goes around it.

Absolutely NOT. Dumbest idea since the Berlin Wall. I also LOVE how calling it a "fence" makes it seem less like the Berlin Wall...same difference. Totally outrageous cost-wise and a complete afront to the people of Mexico and Canada.

Bush is an idiot...I can't wait until the next elecion and we can get rid this clown.

I suppose next we'll be proposing to build sniper roosts every 1/4 mile and just shoot anyone who comes too close to the border like over at GitMo.

No, because it would be a waste of money and not solve a darn thing. Fencing is not the answer, manpower and the removal of incentives is the answer. You build a fence and those who are motivated will still find a way in. And like someone else said, if you are going to fence the Mexico/USA border are you going to fence the Canada/USA border?

I voted not sure but the more I think about it the more I think it would be a colossal waste of money. Not only would it not work but we have people coming here from points of entry other than the Mexican border.

1/3 of illegal aliens are people who entered on vacation or with valid visas and never went home.

Where did you get that from?

If there are over 9 million illegals in this country, then 3 million of them came here legally and just overstayed their welcome? That's hard to believe!

I just read it on CNN and I'll look for it now. I remember that it also said that we assume that all the illegals are coming over the Mexican border, but many are from other parts of the world and just fly in and never leave.

I think Mexicans make up close to 70% of the illegal population right now, though. So while 30% are coming from other places, then Mexico is still the country to keep our eye on as far as immigrant issues at this point in time.

I'm not sure ( I don't think) this was the same article I read, but I did a google search and I came up with this from the San Francisco chronicle.

As many as one-third of those 11 million people did not walk across the border illegally, instead entering the country on tourist, student or work visas and simply staying after the visas expired, Passel estimated

I just think the whole thing is a huge boondoggle. I think that we can keep trying to insulate ourselves from these kinds of problems but the world will continue to creep in and it will just keep getting more and more dangerous unless we address the roots of the problems.

Not to mention the environmental problems.

YES!!!!!!!

And SOON! I am tired of all this BS of illegal immigrents coming in and then raising a stink about the conditions. TOUGH NOOGIES!! Take your *** back to your own country and ***** there..

ABSOLUTELY! And we can make it look just like this:

We could put machine gun nests up at checkpoints and everything!!! How cool would that be ?!?

[/sarcasm]

Yes! I don't think the wall would work though I think they would still manage to get here.

ETA: I changed my post as not to attack mexicans from my jaded experiences living in arizona. Some are worse then others but then some americans are worse then others as well. I'll keep my comments to myself. I don't want to offend anyone on the board!

Maybe we could make like a gigantic paintball field at the border, and if they make it across, they're in. :p

Now we're talkin'! We could let paintball games decide who gets citizenship and who doesn't! You're hit, you go home. Sorry, them's the rules!! :thumbsup2
