Hello everyone, my family is strongly considering purchasing a resale contract. These boards have been very educational and I have spent numerous evenings reading a lot of interesting posts. I did have a question about modifying an existing reservation.

If I were to book a new reservation (at 11 months at my home resort), for example an 8 day reservation, would I be able to shorten my reservation to 6 or 7 days if need be due to school schedules?

I would modify (shorten) at least 2 months before having to check in. I would like to confirm that my entire 8 day stay would not have to be cancelled before seeing if 6 days is available.

Thanks everyone!

Yes you could modify the reservation to shorten it.

As already mentioned yes that can be done as long as you are dropping nights off of the ends of the reservation. If for some reason you wanted to drop days in the middle (maybe go over to Universal or something) then at least part of the reservation would have to be cancelled as you can't carve out nights in the middle of a stay.

Any points returned would go back to whatever status they were when you booked the reservation as long as you modify it 31 days or more prior to check in. If the reservation used current point and you were still in your banking window then they could be banked into your next UY. If the reservation were late in your UY and you modified after your banking window closed then the points would have to be used before the end of that UY. And if they were banked or borrowed points then they also would have to be used prior to the end of your UY.

When you modify at 31-1 day prior to check in you still keep the points but they go into holding status and would need to be used prior to the end of your UY and you would be restricted to making a reservation no earlier than 60 days before the stay.

Overall it's pretty generous and allows modifications without penalties like having to cancel and then hoping to rebook.

Great, thanks for the information! I would possibly be dropping off a day or two, but it would be at the beginning of the trip and not the middle part. Great to know it can be done.

You just have to be careful with your banking date. If you are in the last four months of your UY when you cancel, you cannot bank the points that you don't need. Plus if you borrowed points to make the reservation, you can't unborrow them. They stay in that UY.

Thanks. You answered a follow up question I was about to ask, what would happen if I made the reservation with borrowed points.

But you can ask MS to use the borrowed points to cover the nights you are still booking and then you should be able to bank the left overs if you are greater than four months from the end of your UY.
