We will be traveling down to FW in mid September. :cool1:
I would like to make a short stop-over in south Georgia (Valdosta area) or north Florida for a few hours of shut-eye; does anybody have any suggestions on an inexpensive and safe place to stop?

Most likely anything other than a campground in North Florida will be full.
We have never stopped in the Valdosta area,
We usually stop in Perry GA on the way down from MI.

Are you looking for a rest area or truck stop type area or a campground ?

You can check the GA DOT for rest area info or try the Flying J website for locations.

If you are only looking for a few hours of shut-eye, how about trying a Walmart parking lot. I don't own an RV but our friends, who do, tell us that Walmart allows RV's to stay for free in their parking lots overnight. Yes, that is a Walmart official courtesy. Our freinds have actually done it in a pinch.

I agree with just stopping at Walmart. Maybe map one out. They let you stay in their parking lots for free for stop. I guess they know you will come in and pick up a few things probably! LOL

We always stay at the Valdosta KOA ..... called the Eagle's Roost. Not a bad place, but it is no Fort Wilderness. One thing I can say is that it is very easy to get on and off I-75 from its' location and they are very easy to check into late at night.

The Flying J right at the GA/FL border is a great place to stop for a rest or some sleep. We just gas up and pull over in the rv parking area--to the left of the pumps as you face the building--and settle in.

We have not had much luck at the truck stops as they are always full by the time we get there (late at nite). We usually stop at Lake City. From I75 (?) you will go east about 1 mile on I10 and then exit at their given exit number. There is a campground right off the exit (not a KOA) that is nice enough and then the KOA is farther down this county road. They are both about the same $ per night. You can google campgrounds in Lake City if you will go that far. The one right off the interstate was something like Live Oaks.
I think that once you pass Valdosta there is a whole bunch of NOTHING. so make sure you have the energy to make it to Lake City.

We always stay at truckstops when we are traveling to a destination. DH drives as far as he can then we find one in a Truck Stop Guide or The Next Exit. We have never had a problem finding a spot! We can't see spending the money on a night camping when you are not going to use any of the facilities. We usually get up and eat breakfast there at the buffet and then get back on the road. We are glad to hear that there is a Flying J right at the Florida/Georgia Border. That will be our destination for the night before we arrive at Disney.

The last time we went, we stayed at a TA in the Jacksonville area. We were only a few miles from the Ocean so we drove on over, put our feet in the water and then headed for Fort Wilderness.

We try to find a big truck stop like Flying J or Petro.

Good Luck!

The Flying J in Jackson GA is a little nicer than the one at the FL/GA border. Its at MM 201.

And if you do decide to stop in Jackson, GA may I suggest getting up early and getting a bright and early start on the road. I live just north of Jackson off of I75 and I will warn you that it doesn't matter what time of year it is, the Georgia Department of Transportation will have I-75 Southbound tore up between Atlanta and Valdosta!! It seems that they can never figure out how to fix the stupid road!! :rotfl:

We're leaving next week and I plan on an extra hour just to get to Valdosta because of the road construction. You can also check this website before you leave - it should list all the road construction areas to give you an idea before your trip what to expect!

The projects on I75 between Atlanta and Valdosta seem to be taking a very long time. We were delayed in several places southbound and northbound when we went down just before Easter. We didnt see much work going on either, some sporadic work but not much of a big project.
It will be nice when the entire way is 3 lanes but it will be a struggle to get there.

I have stayed at the KOA in Valdosta on my last two trips on the way to Disney - OK place to stay (secure and pretty quiet), and easy to get off the highway and find. I don't typically stay at Wal-marts, but want the security of a more protected area....plus then I have the hook-ups!
