Part I
We got back a week ago from a great Easter week trip. Our group was DH, me, DD17, DD's friend DF17and DS14, but we didn't all eat every meal. We were celebrating DD's upcoming high school graduation, and I decided that in addition to returning to some of our favorite places we we would try some new ones, and we were really happy with our choices! We are DVC members and stayed at BCV, so we are all breakfasts in the villa. I don't eat beef or pork so I am relying on the others' input for those items.
We arrived on Good Friday around 2pm and were famished but knew we had an ADR at La Hacienda de San Angel. We split some sandwiches from the Marketplace, the turkey, brie and cranberry sauce sandwich. This was really good--they mix up a fesh salad with I think arugula to put on top and it is served on a multi-grain bread. The sandwiches are very good and come with nice homemade chips or a good cucumber/tomato/feta salad, but they are REALLY slow there. Then we headed to Beaches and Cream where the 5 of us shared 3 sundaes--the no way jose, the milky way, and the hot fudge brownie sundae (we subbed in some mint chip ice cream in that one). They were all great, but the no way jose, with the peanut butter and fudge, is by far the best.
After strolling around Epcot for a while, we had our dinner at La Hacienda de San Angel, which had opened after our last visit. I have to highly recommend this place--the food was really good, seemed like it would probably be more authentic Mexican than the typical tacos and super cheesy stuff you get at most US-Mexican restaurants. DH and I decided to try some of the special margaritas. Our server was lovely and gave us a lot of information to help us pick good ones--DH had the raspberry lime, which was really good but a little on the sweet side for me. I had the one which had orange and tabasco sauce--I know it sounds weird, but the server said just to tell her if I didn't like it and she would get me another one. I really liked it--it had a nice amount of kick but wasn't too spicy or sweet (I am just not a fan of very sweet alcoholic drinks, I had planned to get the avocado margarita after reading so much about it here but our server also said that was very sweet). They are not inexpensive, but they are worth it! The chips and salsa were also good. For dinner the 5 of us split the two mixed grill platters for two--between the 5 of us (including DS the human vacuum cleaner) we pretty much ate it all (if we hadn't eaten a late lunch, I suspect at least DS, and maybe DH, would have still been hungry). It was a really good combination. The chorizo was different from what I have seen before, smaller links, but everyone said it was really good. The meats and fish were all very good, lean and very flavorful. Everything on the seafood platter was equally good. The platters came with good grilled vegetables and corn and tortillas. We were too full for dessert. It was about 8:20 or so when we finished (we had a 6:30 ADR and had to wait probably 20-25 minutes to be seated, but the pagers work in the Mexico pavilion so we walked around and rode the boat ride). I had tried to push our reservation later so that we could see Illuminations from the restaurant, but couldn't. We had a window table, and our server was so nice, she told us that we had a great view and we should stay to watch Illuminations and we didn't need to order anything, but the kids wanted to go outside. Even at 8:30 on a holiday weekend, we were able to get a spot along the water next to the restaurant which had a great view for the show.
We also tried another new Epcot experience, Biergarten, for lunch. This was just me, DH and DS. We had a noon reservation and were one of the first groups seated, but the first band show wasn't until 1:15, so we ended up waiting (which our server was very nice about and encouraged, even though the family of 5 sharing our table did not). I was really going more for the experience, since German food is not a favorite of mine since it is so pork heavy, but it turned out that DS and I liked it a lot and DH thought it was just ok. The highlights for me were the cold salads (I love beets in particular), the pretzel bread and beer/cheese soup (all 3 of us loved the soup) and the cheese spaetzle. I had a fish dish that was ok, and DS really liked the schnitzel and the sausages. DH and I split a medium-bodied German beer. The desserts were really nice because they were different than what you see at the other restaurants, and as a dessert lover I tried them all. The apple strudel with vanilla sauce was very good, as was the bavarian cheesecake and the pear tart. The black forest cake was just ok. The setting is very fun and we enjoyed the band's show as well--DS even danced with me! I don't know whether we will return, but I am really glad we went.
