Are there shopping areas at St. Maarten and St. Thomas as soon as you get off the boat or do you have to take a taxi? Also, does the boat dock at these ports or do you need to take a smaller boat to shore?

There are only a couple of small shops at the docking point at St. Maartin. You can take a water taxi to the main shopping area (last time it was $5 for unlimited trips back and forth). Some people take a taxi, or rent a car, to travel to other shopping areas, such as outdoor markets.

On St. Thomas, there is a shopping mall right at the dock. To get to the downtown area, there are many, many taxis.
