shopping for **Made in America** Christmas gifts, as seen on ABC News

The continuing series *MADE IN AMERICA* segment done on ABC News with Diane Sawyer are now focusing on Christmas gift buying. If everyone would spend just $64 on American made gifts, 200,000 more people would be employed immediately.

There are many retailers listed where we shop, that are good on a budget! :thumbsup2

I didn't watch the video so I;m wondering what they are saying about the stores listed. I see LLBean on there and the jeans and sweater I have on are from there and they are made in China. Are these companies to avoid?

DH is a union employee so we've always made an effort to buy American, even it was a bit more expensive. Over the last two years we've really upped that effort. If more people would stop buying all the cheap stuff that is manufactured overseas I think our economy would show a big improvement.

This year I did pretty well with buying items just made in the US. I think I only spent about $200-250 if that on non US stuff. Those things I bought were specifically asked for. I dunno, I just go out looking for quality stuff and if the label said Made in China....I just don't feel its worth the price tag most of the time.

added to our made in the U.S.A. list today:
Bic butane lighters for the Fireplace/firepit for DS stocking...and they were 2/$5:thumbsup2

Awesome! I happened to get three Slinkys for the Christmas Stockings this year :thumbsup2 (One child got one last year, and they ALL played with it - so since they are basically disposable, they are each getting one this year :rotfl: )

Don't forget handmade items.

My mom and I visited a large craft show today and bought a couple of gifts that were completely made in the US.

You do have to watch for people reselling stuff made in China, but if you are careful you can find handmade items.

;)

LLbean does carry a nice selection of made in america stuff and right now for every 50 bucks you spend you get a 10 gift card. Mine came within 5 days so I just broke my order up in 2 parts.

There website generally will say where an item is made.

I've been trying more and more to buy american simply because lately all the clothes I've gotten from China have been crap, especially this summer. Tee shirts paper thin, shrinked after 1 washing ugh...

I found an american manufacturer of underwear. tee shirts much heavier weight cotton and pre shrunk. only issue i had was the shipping was not free.

ITA!! :thumbsup2 And love all the replies so far! :goodvibes

More from ABC News:

"These websites are devoted to American companies or to sourcing where the everyday products you use are from. Use the links below and our interactive map to find companies near you"

I posted this link on my Facebook yesterday. It's a great idea--we have to help ourselves. :goodvibes

How about posting your Made in America finds and where you found the items!

Cutting boards: found at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Sometimes things can be deceiving. For instance, when it comes to cars, some that are "built in the USA" are made mostly of parts imported from elsewhere. On the other hand, many "foreign" cars are made in the USA as well. You can check cars here...

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/MadeInAmerica/page?id=13795239

For instance, 75% of the Toyota Sienna is made in the USA, while the Ford Expedition weighs in at 50%.

I imagine other items are the same way. You may buy a stove made in the US, but did the parts come from a US company or was it just put together here?

I bought my husband a beautiful leather toiletries case from North Star Leather: http://www.nstarleather.com He's been traveling a lot lately and has been carrying his toiletries in a plastic grocery bag. Clearly, an intervention was necessary! I can't wait for him to open it.

North Star makes a huge selection of leather goods, all made in South Carolina.

Another good resource: The blogger who runs A Continuous Lean (http://www.acontinuouslean.com) keeps "The America List" full of very high quality products and sources (http://www.acontinuouslean.com/the-american-list/). I've found a number of excellent ideas there.

For the preppy in your life, visit James Kiel Patrick (http://kieljamespatrick.com/) - really cute things all made in New England. Eliza B. (http://elizab.com/index.html) also has US-made items excellent for gifting - I really like the dog accessories!

Maybe, but the * profit$ * stay in America.

Yes, but those car companies are not supporting the parts companies in the US when they buy from overseas, you know? If they would get their parts from the US companies, a LOT more people would have jobs than if I bought my little piddly amount of stuff made in the US. It is deceptive to keep advertising that their cars are American made when the parts are from elsewhere.

Personally I'm more interested in the worker than in profits. I'd love to know which of the car companies employ the most American workers directly or indirectly.
