Shopping for College Dorm Room, College Freshman necessities

And just on the off chance anyone on here has not heard about it, dorm insurance is GREAT to have. It covers theft, damage, lost, accidents, everything and is extremely reasonable.

I would recommend it to everyone. www.nssi.com

just realized that I will prob have to get DD a TV (unless her room mate gets one)

What is the average size/cost people get them for? today I saw a vizio 19 inch for $148 at wal mart. Am I in the right ballpark?:confused3

My DD watches most of her TV shows on her computer. She says she doesn't need a TV for her dorm :)

I believe this will def become on the norm within a few short years. I'm thinking to get a smaller set since she'll prob do the same thing.

She probably won't need one. :thumbsup2

As far as I know the boys only use the TV for mostly gaming & watching sports popcorn::

You know your daughter best, my DD is a gamer so she is taking a 23" TV and her PS3. Interesting about the N64, I think we still have ours.

We are going to pick up a cheap DVD player or see if we have an extra because they may not always want to use thier laptop for these. Also, check with your college, I think where DD is going the have cable in each room. YMMV

OH - how totally rude & sexist of me! Of course there are girl gamers!!!! *I* love Mario. Very sorry about that one. :flower3:

And Debby, the professional lurker - HI! From one profesional lurker to another. I have been here over 10 years & still not a "DIS Veteran". I do love it when there is something that I can post and feel like I might help someone though.

Me too and hello back to you! I didn't take your remark badly, just a lot of the Moms of guys were chiming in and I thought the girls should get equal time (I game in spurts :) and love Rabbids games)

My DD has met her roommate already and they have decided who is going to bring what, I think that always works best. I have also heard a lot of people suggest that you wait on buying some things until you see how the stuff you bring works in the room. We haven't been able to see anything but a virtual layout of DD's room for the fall. For orientation, she stayed in a different type of dorm and we've never been able to tour a room where she'll be. It will be an adventure on move in day!

Check your homeowners insurance, ours covers 10% of what the value of our home is covered for. That far exceeds what he would need.

Our homeowners is the same.

Trust me, get some sort of dorm insurance if your homeowners policy does not cover it. We heard stories at orientation, however, DS dealt with many evacuations due to fires...thankfully, nothing major but you never know. Kids putting poptarts, still in foil, in the microwave :confused3 and curling irons placed on piles of clothing and left on...:confused3 the one story we heard at orientation was that kids were playing ball in the hallway and somehow making the sprinkler system go on....with water then seeping to the floor below.

The only reason that I even mentioned the Dorm Ins is that it is cheap, covers loss & accidents, you don't have to file a claim on your homeowners Ins & there is only a $25 deductible. Very worth it if a laptop, phone, TV, whatever gets lost, stolen or damaged. We have used it for dropped phones (broken screen), laptop crash, and an iTouch that went missing. For us it has been worth it but of course YMMV :)

I just put it out there as a FYI, that is all.....

No argument posts please - this is just for people like me who can appreciate the task of getting their son to school with min headache. It can be very different getting a son off to school as opposed to a girl!

DS is just entering his Senior Year & so this will be our 4th dorm move in. It is so true about the boys being :confused3 about what they want/need. His Freshman year he did not shop for one single thing! After getting to know a lot of Mom's from his school, as well as knowing Moms here, it seems like it is a common theme with the boys. I don't think they like shopping & don't want to plan for moving away. They want to have fun, hang with their friends, work, watch sports, etc. oh wait - kinda like their Dads :happytv:

So - unless you want a call at 1:00 AM, saying I need deodorant, mine ran out yesterday :rotfl: or whatever, I found it was easier (shhh...and fun) to just get his stuff for him. The other Moms' I am friends with did that as well. But that is just how I roll I guess. Please, no comments on making him stand on his own two feet. I still shop for DH! They both get the scary spiders & carry heavy stuff for me princess:

So, after a start of frustrated calling (me) & sending photos of bedding while shopping & asking if he liked this bedding, etc. and getting lots of "no"s, I finally came home with stuff that was just duplicates of his room at home. He was thrilled & declared he loved it all:rotfl2::thumbsup2:rotfl2: so, that just sorta became my theme while shopping.

So - hints for boys (at least the ones I know):

Stock up. So, when he calls about the deodorant, you are ready & can say "there is more in the bottom drawer of the rolling thing" or whatever. I sent enough toothpaste, deodorant, contact stuff, laundry det, etc. for the 1st Term.

Send a wide variety of meds. I got a small rubbermaid box & filled it with travel size, compact, or concentrate size meds. Everything. When they get sick, and you are far away, it is so helpful to be able to say, look in the box, there is a small bottle of chloraseptic concentrate. Totally agree with figuring out where they should go if they are sick. A lot of campuses have regular Doctors within walking distance & they can use your insurance. In our experience, this is a FAR SUPERIOR choice then the campus clinic!

Buy gray towels! Ewwww. Don't ask. And if they don't know how, make sure & have them start doing their own laundry NOW! :laundy:

I purchased a desk drawer organizer & just filled it with paper clips, pens, etc. put Seran on the top & we just took that off & popped it in the drawer & instant stocked desk!

A small tool set, or a couple of basic tools is an absolute must. It will also make you instantly popular on move in day. :woohoo:

This is exactly what I was looking for this am. I sent my daughter off to school last year and what a different experience, but I new it would be. I have to laugh because he acts like its torture to even discuss planning his dorm room, when I asked him if he wanted me to just go buy his dorm stuff or did he want to go shopping with me his reply was "Please don't make me go!"
I do know his room will be cheaper to outfit then my daughter, he would die if I bought him PB Teen anything!

My real question is, what did you do about bedding my son insists he only needs sheets and a blanket did you buy a comforter set? I'm afraid it might be to bulky for him and he won't want to deal with it.

I have to laugh because this is my DD right now, I took her to the container store (where her father is a manger) and I saw her melt down right before my eyes and I thought she was just going to burst into tears. So it's not always boys there are a few girls, but my DD is also not one to really plan in advance so we've started already and I will continue to add to our pile in the next two months, yes she can do her own laundry, but not until it's absolutely necessary, but yesterday I did throw a container of gel packs in one of her big containers. My DD will also be the one to call in the middle of the night to tell me that she doesn't have something also. :rotfl2:

I didn't think about the larger deductible on our homeowners insurance, because my dd is also in college and has never had a problem. She stays in an apartment that is campus housing so there is limited access to her room but my son will be in a traditional dorm.

In regards to dorm room essentials, I need advice from experienced parents on how to pack it all up!
What do you think is the most efficient way to pack all the college dorm room items so that is easy to move when move-in day comes??

I was thinking of putting everything in Rubbermaid containers and then just bring the empty containers home with me.

I know move-in day will be crazy and I am just trying to think of ways to make it go smoothly!
Thanks!

I think we're doing the same thing except we'll leave the containers in the room to use as storage under the bed etc. :)

I'm buying the flat/long containers to use as underbed storage.

We're also putting as many clothes on hangers as we can, covering them with garbage bags and then hanging as much up as we can.

I also bought a smaller tote to use as a first aid kit, one to store cleaning stuff and one to store extra toiletries.

What are the best companies for dorm insurance?

The only one that I know about is the one that I use: NSSI. I highly recommend them. They are very reasonable, offer accident & loss on their insurance as well as theft, etc. & the claims process is super easy.

Hope this helps. :)
