Could anyone recommend a shooting range within driving distance of I-Drive?
Ive found a few on Google but would prefer to try one where someone has already been
I took a friend to Reig's a couple of years ago. Helpful staff and a reasonable range of firearms to rent.
How familiar with firearms are you? Having experiance with firearms is essential as they will not be comfortable with renting you a firearm without the knowledge of checking, clearing and making safe any firearm you rent. Also safe range protocols and experiance with missfires etc. will be helpful.
I don't know if you're visiting Kennedy Space Center at all, but there is an excellent shooting range at the nearby American Police Hall of Fame & Museum. It is run by the police and is very well monitored. Fascinating people to talk to, as well.

Hi
I have been shooting shotguns for over 25yrs, so am familiar with loading, etc
although different from pistols the same safety rules will apply, i'm sure
Reigs seems to have good reviews elsewhere too (my husband had asked when I mentioned this thread to him, as shotgun ranges are harder to come by). He is a member of an outdoor private range, it's a bit further from Disney.
We once went to a range at a shop on OBT that I wasn't impressed with - there was noone watching for safety, and at one point a woman who didn't know what she was doing had a gun pointed towards me! (I wasn't worried that I was going to get shot, but that is something you don't do with a knife, scissors or a gun!) I don't do a lot of shooting, but there are good and bad places in the Orlando area. I know there is a place in the Clermont area, but I'm not sure if that might be a private range too.
Been following this thread with interest as its something I would like to try as well.
From the above though, am I to understand that because i've never even held a real gun in my life (never mind load it, shoot it or whatever) that I have no chance of being able to do it at a range in Orlando?
You don't need experience to go to a range. But I'd go to one where someone can help you - as far as holding a gun, making sure you put the gun down when you aren't shooting, not pointing it in the wrong direction, shooting, etc.
