shooting from a moving vehicle..

i asked and many said yep they do it all the time...but mine always turn out blurry...so any tips how to take good photos from a moving car or some similar vehicle? do you use a faster shutter speed or anything or i might not be doing?

you most definitely want a fast shutter speed otherwise you will have blurring from movement..

Definitely use a fast shutter speed. You should probably also use image stabilization if it's available. Just remember to switch it to panning mode if you are moving the camera relative to the car. I would also keep the camera in the mode where it continuously focuses rather than the one where it locks on focus.

You might want to upgrade to a Rolls Royce to try to get a smoother ride as well. Get one with a red stripe painted around the front of the car.

Hey... no knocking saturns! BTW, I take pictures on the freeway (as the passenger) alot..

What are you trying to catch thats blurry? How close to car? What shutter speed? If you post an image with EXIF still attached we can probably help more.

my saturn relay IS a rolls royce to me - AND - makes it possible for my DH to do things like go out and get the 30D.

Crank up to ISO to 400-1600 (as needed) and use shutter priority mode set to like 1/1000 or faster. I've gotten some really good photos on Kilamanjaro using this strategy. And follow MarkBarbieri's advice about using continuous focusing mode and the image stabilizer.

Oh, and take more photos than you think you'll need since some will be out of focus no matter what you do.

Ok, I have a 1996 Saturn with 185000 miles on it. How come I can't afford a 30D? Huh? What am I doing wrong here? Perhaps it's the the constant oil additions?

LOl, it can be done even if you don't have a Saturn. This was taken from the back of a moped in Nassau. You can see DHs blurry helmut. I'm hanging on and shooting while he's driving on the other side of the road.

hey andy i'm in the same boat...except mine has 200,000 miles on it...just to clarify in no way am i knocking saturns.ours in the only car i have ever owned that has gone that many miles with under $2000 of lifetime repairs( actually it just started needing anything repaired so probably 1500 has been in the past year and part of that was tires ) however i do not think it is quite as smooth riding as a rolls ours has always used oil as well...forget why but it's the same yr.
this one however turned out pretty good, but i did make sure i wasn't resting my arm on the side of the car, don't know if that had any affect or not

I used "The Pod" (www.thepod.ca) on my last trip to the World. I didn't use it in moving vehicles but it would probably work ok. I liked it as a modest replacement for a tripod when shutter speeds were no higher than about 2 seconds or so. The only thing I had to do to make it work well was remove about half the beans. Otherwise it was too stiff.
