I have 'bad' feet and had 3 surgeries so this is my kind of thread - I can give you some tips based on my 'bad' feet. But I don't let my bad feet ruin my life. I run 20+ miles a week and walk A LOT. And I will wear high heels if the occasion calls for it! So here are some tips from ME and what I've learned:
- In general, the best shoes are shoes that allow for a 1 to 2 inch difference between your toe and heel. This gives your feet a natural lift in back which helps the arch.
- Platforms with heels (not excessive Lada Gaga) are more stable than shoes with just heels. I try to find my nicer shoes with a little platform under the toe portion.
- Crocs are very bad for MY feet. I'm not getting in a discussion here. I know people like Crocs but they are bad ... I'll qualify that as bad for ME, but really, they are bad shoes.
- Use orthotics if you are an over-pronator or under-pronator (flat footed). This only works in certain, closed-toe shoes.
- It is best to switch out your shoes each day. Don't wear the same shoes twice in a row. For Disney though, I usually wear one pair during the day, another in the afternoon, and another at night (see below).
- If you are prone to tripping (especially for children), get a closed-toe shoe (they make sandals now that will cover your big toe!)
- Tennis shoes, while good for your feet, can be HOT and cause other issues so if you are going during a hot time, be wary of tennis shoes.
- My favorite Disney shoes are....
Daytime - Tevas! They have a padding underneath the straps now so the straps don't dig into your skin, have the option of a strap over the big toe (but I don't have that), have formed arches, can go in water, dry easily, and are ANTI-BACTERIAL. These work great at the water park as well as walking around a theme park.
Afternoon - Platform Flip flops (an inch difference between the toe and heel) - I ONLY use these to walk to the pool and back or walk around the hotel room. That is it - I NEVER use these to walk around a park or in a waterpark.
Evening - DANSKO sandals (that have an inch difference between the toe & heel) - I have black 'strappy' sandals that have a thick platform sole. Danskos have a natural arch support that were recommended by my podiatrist. These shoes have lasted a long time and look nice even if I choose to wear a skirt or dress for the evening.
NIGHT - socks! I wear lightweight socks around the hotel room and just in case they get cold at night
