How much would you spend on a pair of nice dress shoes?

I am a broke college student, I work only part time. I spent the better half of the last 2 weeks trying to find a nice suit to wear to job interviews, as I graduate in May and hoepfully will be an RN by the end of the summer. Now I tried at leat 4 stores and I was totally frustrated and not finding anything so I went to Nordstroms. I found a beautiful suit that they are going to alter to fit perfect! It was more than I should have spent, but alas, the problem is the SHOES!!! They had me try on the most beautiful pair of shoes! I really fell in love with them and I am NOT a shoe person. They look GREAT with the suit, I can walk in them, they are kind of flashy and I want them SO BAD! But they are really out of my budget. I never buy fancy shoes or expensive shoes, but I REALLY want these to complete my interview outfit! I want to feel great when I go to an interview. If I buy them, they are going on my credit card. I spent hours today trying to find another pair to go with my suit, and just nothing is coming anywhere close to the shoes!

Look at it as an investment. If you look good, and feel good, then the initial cost outlay will not be a problem once you land the job. If you are spending hundreds of dollars for a pair of shoes to wear once or twice, I would pass.

They are $155, and I have never spent that much on a pair of shoes in my life! But they are so pretty! ANd silver, so they go with navy, black & jeans!

I chose under $50, but I am a total cheap-o when it comes to shoes and other accessories (purses, etc). I don't think I have ever spent more than $50 on any pair of shoes, EVER.
My crocs are actually my most expensive shoe indulgance, at usually about $40 a pair. Everything else comes from WalMart or Payless. :confused3 Spendy shoes just aren't in the budget.

Other than sneakers, I have never spent more than $40 on a pair of shoes, even my nice interview shoes that have always landed me the job.

Can I also ask, what color shoes would you wear with a Navy colored suit? Thanks in advance! I am fashion challenged!

Navy? :confused3

I love shoes so I have lots of them. I have every color of the rainbow and then some. (ActuallyI don't have yellow. I'm on the prowl for the perfect pair of casual yellow heels.)

I think it's a bad idea to spend quite that much if you don't have it to spend and no job yet. Besides, you will need a second outfit to wear or at least a second top to go under the suit for follow up interviews. I think a nice pair of non flashy color shoes which can be worn with multiple outfits would be a much more reasonable choice than silver. Silver is nice, but it's noticeable which means they will be very much noticed on the interview, which means if you see the person a second time he/she will know immediately you don't have another pair of dress shoes... not such a good impression. Then there is the tricky fact that it will be hard to find another suit that would go well with silver shoes.

Personally, unless the suit is brown I would go for a nice black closed leather pump that can be dressed up or down in any season. Nine West has a perfectly nice line and you can probably find a nice pair of shoes on sale from the winter line for about $50, check Macy's, TJ Maxx, Marshall's. You've already spent on the suit, there is no need to spend on the shoes too... not now. When you get the job and have the money to burn THEN it makes sense to spurge on things you don't really need.

What about a woman's dressy briefcase/laptop style bag for the interviews? Do you have one? It's messy to show up with an old purse, or empty handed with no place to put your keys, wallet or papers. A guy can get away with a dumpy wallet because it will be hidden but a female is expected to have some kind of bag. You can get away with not having an expensive purse if you have a trendy looking laptop type case. I'd spend a little bit there (you can get one at around $30), and show up well put together. But that's just me.

Good luck interviewing.

I have spent that much on shoes - but only once or twice.

Do you have a picture?? I'd love to see!!

Do you have a DSW or Off Broadway near you? Check them out for discount shoe. I'll be you find the perfect pair for your suit. :thumbsup2

If you like them that much, think of it as an investment. Your feet probably won't grow much in the next couple of years... although I don't know how old you are, but mine actually grew a size between 2 pregnancies.

I say go for it -- splurge and enjoy!

Those are pretty!

However, you can find less expensive silver shoes that make you feel pretty and a sensible pair of navy blue or black shoes for $50 less than what those one pair cose.

I am NOT a shoe person..actually I am anti shoe.;) But I have a couple of nice pair of black leather pumps that I paid less than $40 at an outlet-Bass, I think. They are not flashy, but I go for classic, no flash.

My feet grew 1/2 size for each of my pregnancies, and did not return to my former size 6.

Okay, I am sorry to say this and flame away but.....I don't think those shoes are appropriate for a job interview.

Modest, black/navy pumps depending on the color of your suit would be more fitting and less expensive. Those shoes are too flashy and do not scream professional to me.

Totally not trying to be mean, just trying to be honest and helpful. :)

If you were in a different field, I might buy and wear those shoes. I think if I was interviewing for a RN job, I would probably be a little more conservative with my shoe choice, but what do I know.

I agree. Silver shoes to a job interview for a conservative type job is not good.

Navy is kind of a hard color to match sometimes. If you can't find the perfect navy, go with black or even dark brown shoes for an interview.

Ok I hope your getting them in black. Silver with not get you points in a job interview.

A good well made of leather black, blue or brown shoes are worth their weight in gold. I have a $200 pair that are basic black pumps that I have had for 5 years and look fabulous, 10 times better then a brand new $40 pair. Besides the feel is unbelievable and though they are heels.

I think those shoes would look stunning with a nice navy blue suit. Interview attire doesn't have to be all bland and boring. If the nice silver shoes gives her a little self confidence and a bounce in her step then they are worth it. I don't think they are too flashy at all. But she does need simple, elegant navy blue and black pumps for the future.

Is the suit a pant suit or a skirt suit?

Personally, I would not buy $155 shoes. I wouldn't buy $50 shoes unless I knew I'd wear them often and they were super comfortable. Honestly, I would go to Payless or another discount shoe store. You can get some very cute shoes that would look fabulous for under $30.

Note: Go to sears.com and do a search for silver shoes. They have tons of really cute silver shoes. Some are K-Mart, some Sears, all between $10 and $50.
