Okay so today in english we were talking abou the holocaust. (PLEASE tell me everyone knows what it is...if not google it) But anyway our intern teacher used to live in germany and told us that in german textbooks they have summerized the holocaust down to about two scenteces. And last year we learned that many people refuse to belive that it ever happened! What do they think happened? Do they think someone wanted to play a prank or something? NO ONE goes THAT FAR for playing a prank.

THAT FAR meaning...
tattooing numbers on arms
pitures
concentration camps
anne frank musiem
it goes on and on. do they really think this is some sick joke, and someone went that far to make it realistic?

sorry to break anyones hearts here but THE HOLOCAUST REALLY HAPPENED. MILLION OF JEWS DIED UNDER THE CRUELTY OF NAZIS. i would say germans but it wasnt germans it was nazis who happend to be german. and i have no disrespect of germans--i and part german and i have jewish friends. but i can understand if you have so much pride in ur country that you will not want to admit it--but you know in your gut that it happened..i mean it is not like you were part of it.

anyone want to share some thoughts?

:sad2: :sad1: :sad2:

i just find this heartbreaking

You also have to remember that many of the Nazi's were forced to do those terrible things. It was their life and their familys or someone elses life. And a lot of them were brainwashed.

I'm not saying that what they did was right at all, but to say all Nazi's are horrible is a broad generalization.

The Nazi's also helped my grandpa and his family come to America.

the holocaust did indeed happen. it is very sad people still believe that it didnt. the millions of jews, gypisies, and homosexuals murdered. there is a speical place in hell for people who totally think it is all a "myth"
(totally MY OPINION BTW)

It's not just jews that died.

I love WWII historical fiction & autobographies. I swear I've read The Diary of Anne Frank about 20 times.

Yeah, & about the german textbooks. OUR (U.S) textbooks don't (really) mention that in the westward expansion we killed and conquered Native Americans and stole Mexico.

It's all about how that particular country views their history. That's why history is far from concrete and should not be taken at face value.

And oh yeah, of course the Holocaust happened. It's ignorant fools that don't recognize that.

yes i do understand it was not just jews. but we dont pretend the Native americans and stealing mexico.. it was something that happend before our time and we could not stop.

also to a different post--yes you are absoululty correct SOME were brainwashed, and SOME nazis relized that what they were doing was wrong. i am just saying the MAJORITY werent.

This is my favorite subject to read about. I think i've read all the books on it already. But yes, it really did happen. No one would have just made up a joke that sick and go that far with it.

I was refering to how it's not really mentioned in our history textbooks, making the connection to the holocaust not really being mentioned in german textbooks. Germany is probably ashamed of their role in WWII & don't want to be constantly reminded of it by putting it in the books.

Yeah, and the Holocaust was also something that happened before this generations time, & we couldn't stop it? So what are you trying to say?

what textbooks are you reading? four chapters of America: A Narrative History (seventh edition) cover the explotiations of the mexican american wars and the abusive of the natives by the white man.

the only history classes that teach patriotism stop in about the fifth grade. certainly not high school or college level. i'm in a sophomore level college american history class and its not skimped on the horrors that the natives faced.

We were talking about this in English yesterday
Appartlently many of the Natizis didnt even realize how big of a deal it was
They had one particular job and didnt realize how many others were involved in it
What really disgust me about it is the Hitler is Jewish, Brown Haired etc...
But he thought the ideal human was Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes
I dont get that at all
But Hitler did have a pretty messed up childhood...

Well, I'm in 8th grade, and we are taking American History right now.

Also, I totally agree with the sick joke thing. Who ever thinks that is prolly sum1 who loves Germany and is too ashamed to admit that the Haulocaust actually happened and so many terrible things were done to those poor people.

It could be worse, Last year, my best frienbd was dating a guy whom we found out was like, a total Hitler worshiper, he would even like mumble to himself in german congragulating Hitler on everything he did in the Haulocaust when we were talking about it that year. It was terrible, so I told my friend and she went balistec (surprisingly, she did not break up with him tho..... but thats a diff, and longer story)
So I was just shocked that sum1 would actually like that the Haulocaust happend! To me thats as bad as pretending it never happened, if not worse.

Lastly, I think Hitler was a genius, he just used his genius to be evil, creating the Haulocaust and everything, u know? Anyone else agreee with me on this?

I understand that Jews were not the only ones that were killed, but they were a fast majority. 5 million Jews were killed, and 1 million of every other else combined. That's why they pay more attention to the Jews.

Last year my teacher was obsessed with the holocaust (it was terrible, because he had a Hitler moustache and everything) and we spent (no joke) 4 months of our school year, learning about Hitlers life, and the holocaust.

so do a lot of other kids and they dont got and do what he did. but yes i think that what u say about him and his childohood is right, i think it was his messed up life as a kid and his pride for germany (once they lost WWI) that to him he thought it was up to HIM to fix germany. idk it may have been one of those good intentions turned bad. idk though i mean i didnt know him obviously.

i think you are absoulutly right he was indeed veryy smart and a genius. i think he could have done so many great things.

It is indeed a terrrible thing.

But do relize american did something similar with the japanese during WW2 also? All Japanese living on the west coast were sent to internment camps. While no one was killed many died from the poor conditions. They barely mention this in any school US history book (at least around here)

Around here, American History books have maybe 1 chapter of each. I'm speaking from person experience.

We also talked about this the other day in my history class. My instructor even notices that it's not mentioned much in textbooks, so I don't think that it's a regional thing.

::yes:: I actually had to research and read about this on my own, as I was never taught about it in school.

The Holocaust was one of the worst things to have ever happened. I don't know how people can deny that. Holocaust denyers are seriously a messed up species.

I know all about the tattoos. It's so sad and disturbing.

Anyone who hasn't read The Diary of Anne Frank must read it. Also a MUST read is Night by Eli Wiesel...it's a FANTASTIC book.

I think people are ignorant if they don't believe that the holocaust occured. The facts are right in front of their face.

I find anyone who ignores blatant facts ignorant.

The Diary of Anne Frank was part of our cirriculum here. I think it was 8th Grade English where you had to read it. I already read it in the 6th grade, and I was taking foreign languages anyway. (Around here, foreign languages start in 7th and 8th grades for the bright kids. If you don't make it i n 7th, you don't get languages till high school)

I took a class all about the Holocaust and other examples of genocide.

The atrocities that happened are...unspeakable.
Honestly, watching the videos made me sick to my stomach.

But we did an excercise in class to help explain HOW something like this could happen.
And, without getting into details because it would take a really long time to explain, but it REALLY opened my eyes to how easily people can be convinced that what they're doing is right.
And that people really easily go along with the majority.
It's human nature.

So, that being said, the entire nation of Germany paid for what it did.
And the amount of shame that comes with that part of their history is huge.
It's not like the entire country has just forgotten and moved on.
I sincerely doubt that students are only taught "2 lines" about the Holocaust in their education. That fact was likely taken out of context.

I read over that and it almost sounded like I'm condoning what happened.
I am not. AT ALL. I was just saying that while it was a dark period of history, it could easily happen again, ANYWHERE, if we don't all remember and learn from it.
But people in Germany right now cannot be blamed for what their ancestors did (or, more correctly, did NOT do). That would be the same as blaming Americans now for slavery.
It's a dark part of our nation's history, but we've grown and learned from it, and while we need to learn about it, it doesn't help to dwell on it.
