Shirts with sheer panels can add up to sunburn!

Just thought I would post this. Went to Disney yesterday with a shirt on that had a sheer panel across the shoulders. The sheer panel even had a design printed on it, so it wasn't extremely see thru.

I have a blistering sunburn where that sheer panel was. I applied sunscreen everywhere else, but didn't think of sunscreening that sheer panel because it wasn't THAT sheer and I've never burned in a shirt with a sheer panel before.

So, yeah, if your wearing a shirt that has those panels, probably better sunscreen up before you put it on.
I'm so annoyed with myself because I've had precancerous moles removed and now I've gotten a horrible burn right where they were.

Thought I would share to help prevent someone else from making the same dumb mistake.

So sorry about your surprise sunburn.

We're just back from a week at the beach plus a day at Disney. We had a great time but am happy to have a break from sun maintenance again.

So sorry to hear it and thanks for the reminder! So many things that wouldn't be a challenge in my Midwest home have to be reconsidered on a full day in the Florida sun - re-applying, sheer panels, the part in your hair, tops of ears, the edges of a shirt or shorts where your clothes shift and leave exposed skin you didn't lotion up. . . Brutal for us fair skinned folks!

Do you do trip reports? Interested to see how a DLR vet and pre-FP+ vet fared on your WDW portion of the trip. Hope you had a great time!

My poor fair skinneed son got burned at the beach even with lots of sunscreen. Even his scalp peeled!

We lived in South Florida for 25 years before moving. The cliche about ppl going to the beach and laying around soaking up sun is a joke. You couldn't do it for more than 15 min without feeling your skin sizzle. Like you're in a frying pan set to "high." I suppose visiting WDW in these warm months feels wonderful to a visitor from elsewhere, and WDW attractions will keep your mind busy, rather than noticing the heat and sun. But you absolutely have to wear good quality sunscreen -- or else! I don't look completely wonderful in a ball cap, but it keeps lots of sun off my face and head.

We only did one park day on this trip, so probably no trip report on this one. Thanks for asking though.

Along with a good reminder about sheer shirts, I ALWAYS forget my head. I realized the other day my part line was completely lobster red and tender to touch.

Yep. Lots of lobster jokes at the beach this year. :)

Being quite fair myself, I go for hibernation more than anything else. I went out early and late and avoided the heat of the day. On our one day at Disney most of our day was structured around avoiding the worst sun of the day.

Ha ha. Funny you say that because AFTER I asked, I noticed your long colorful signature line loaded with trip reports and thought "what a dumb question! If I shifted my eyes 1 cm south, I'd see of course she does TRs!"

The sun is no joke. I'm one of those guys wearing a shirt at the water-parks, not for modesty, but to block the sun! I got the worst sunburn ever on my back at Typhoon Lagoon when I was 15 or so, and I swore I would never have that again. That was the last time i have ever been burned so badly. I re-up my sunscreen constantly while at Disney. Guys don't so much worry about sheer shirt panels, but I can totally see overlooking it. It's so important to use proper sun-care.

Yeah, I always pile on the sunscreen at Disney, that FL sun is like nothing I have ever felt. So strong, even late into the day. I always try to wear a hat to protect my head and ears. I bought one that has a wide brim. I look kind of foolish in it, but it makes me feel better. I am paranoid about getting sun burns.

Also put the sunblock on even if it's a cloudy day. My worse sunburn was on an overcast day at the beach.

Look for clothing that has added sun protection. I wear Columbia if I'm outside for long periods of time.

Smart thinkn'. This post prompted me to look up the SPF of common clothing. There's a good article on REI's web site (here if interested http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/sun-protection.html ) saying that many shirts with no special treatment carry a SPF of up to 15, but fair-skinned people who burn easily may need more, especially nearer the equator or on the reflective water.

When you're going to be on the water for a long time, that t-shirt or swim shirt can save your vacation! The first vacation hubby (then boyfriend) and I took was a WDW/beach trip. On day 2, he spent nearly all day in the water and never reapplied sunscreen. He got a horrible burn that resulted in 2 wasted days of laying in a cool, hotel room with cold towels and aloe gel constantly bring applied.

I had a couple doozies when I was a kid and since then I just don't take chances.

I do have to say that my son always fought me on the sunscreen and since he got burned on this trip (not even too awful because he had on a shirt and didn't blister) he has been much more cooperative about it all.

No problem. I'm sure I've done the same thing. :)
