On the white side, a lovely summer-time wine is Vinho Verde, a slightly effervescent wine hailing from Portugal. It's light, airy, and exceptional with light salads and seafood. A little heavier in body, Torrontes is a largely Argentinian varietal that hints at being a Chardonnay but with a bit more aromatics (my favorites have a hint of lavender) and minus the oak or butter hints that many Chardonnays possess. From the reds, we enjoy Pinotages with our favorites coming from South America--their uniqueness is unmistakable: lightly smoky with lots of berry and pepper notes. While not exactly a lesser known wine, Montelpulciano d'Abruzzo is our go-to accompaniment to most Italian sauces, especially long-cooking one such as Bolognese. Finally, Chile has a wonderful red called Carmenere: succulent, with moderate tannins, and dark berry flavors. Equally adept at complementing a steak or a burger. Slainte!
My favorite white usually winds up being a Sauvignon blanc from new Zealand with a good grapefruit bouquet. But there are some Chardonnays I love and some white burgundy.
I lean toward white in the summer because it's chilled, but in general I prefer red - and there I am a conspicuous napa girl. Which one really depends on how much I'm willing to spend. If I'm in a crazy mood, I'll do a Cakebread Cabernet. Oh... And Italian reds! Barollo, tuscans..... Oh - and red zin.... Ok, too early in the day for this!
