shipping luggage

Not trying to sound like a total cheapskate, but has anyone ever shipped their luggage to a DVC resort instead of paying the airlines ridiculous fees? I have heard that USPS, UPS, and Fed Ex will ship your suitcases.

Keep in mind that BCV, BWV, BLT charge a fee to receive your shipment. Fee is based on size and weight, for luggage it's $10 or more per item.

If the $10 fee wasn't there, would it really be cheaper to ship it?

Well, we are going on a cruise for Easter week. We decided to spend Friday night at OKW when a room opened up. Unfortunately due to Easter and Spring break, airline prices were already ridiculous. So, we were looking and found a Spirit flight out of Atlantic City Airport that is (relatively) reasonable compared to Philly, but it's Thursday night. Crazy timing as I looked, and a Value studio at AKV Jambo opened up. Now these are two resorts that we've never seen, and probably wouldn't pick for a future visit without checking out sometime while we were there. Perfect opportunity to see two resorts, the flight is a perfect time to get out after work, and not get to Orlando super late at night.

Problem is Spirit price gouges worse than any airline for bags. If you prepurchase your bag fees when you book, it's $35 a bag. If you check them at the airport, it's $45, so yes, it will save money. We don't know if we will need 2, 3, or 4 bags until we pack. We will be packed a week ahead of time, but it's more about the airline nickel and diming you. I hate that. Just include it in the fare. Anyway, no fees at AKV or OKW, so to ship it, I could save some $ and also stick it to airline for the bait and switch tactics they use.

$45 is ridiculous. Let us know how much they charge to ship it/what size suitcase you use. I would actually like doing this. I think it would add to the building excitement of the trip in a way. :) It would also be nice to arrive at the airport and only have carry ons to deal with.

Carry ons you say! Spirit charges $50 for anything that goes into the overhead bin and that is if you pay at booking.....$100 if you bring it the airport or at the gate! They offer low fares, but they rob you for everything else. I mentioned shipping our cruise luggage to my wife and she just raised an eyebrow at me! I will investigate and definitely let you know what the cost is. I have read that it really saves on oversized or overly heavy luggage.

WOW!!! If you didn't know this in advance, that could be a really shocking discovery at the airport! Do they charge if it's a bag that fits under the seat in front of you?

We ship our luggage all the time. It's roughly $20 down and even cheaper back b/c disney gets a cheaper rate. It is super convenient. We also ship breakfast foods down and use that space for souvenirs home.

What size suitcases would you say you use? And where do you go at Disney when you're headed home? Does the front desk take care of the shipping or somewhere else?

Who/what do you use to ship? I will be taking one bag with us with our things for our 2 night stay, but we will have at least 2 suitcases for our cruise. Those I would like to ship.

Posts like this makes me love Jet Blue even more! :)

HA! I actually love SW, and will pay a little more out of principle because of no bag fees, seat fees, good customer service. But the only flight they offer that day we can make is very inconvenient. Spirit's itinerary is perfect, but the no frills isn't translating into a lower cost....just a better time.

After booking the flight, it's not as bad as I found on the website. It's only $30 per bag if you prepay up until 24 hours prior to departure. At 24 hours in advance you can check in. Once check in opens, if you prepay a bag then (within 24 hours of departure time) you pay $35. If you arrive at the airport and check a bag then, it's $45. So, it gives time to figure out how many bags we need, and can pay the lowest rate for that. I'm still curious about shipping the luggage though. It could be easier on some trips to not have to worry about checking it......and a delivery service like UPS, USPS, or Fed ex is FAR less likely to lose it than an airline!

Yes, I have thought about doing this before, but since we prefer Jet Blue, I don't need to worry about it. I have sent down packages of food ahead of time because DD needs to be gluten free. Now, if we don't have a car, I just pack the food in a separate suitcase and check it. :)

I can't imagine who that poster is shipping with for $20 per bag. I've priced it out several times in the past and it was way more than the airline (continental is only $25). Luggage shipping services are over $100.

We shipped the majority of what ended up in our owner's locker, now we only have a carry on (that fits under the seats). So easy!!

I'd be really careful with shipping. We shipped luggage to WDW our last trip and because we didn't allow enough time (you ideally need more than a week), we had to pay additional charges to make sure it made it to the resort in time. One relatively light box cost over $50 to ship. So I'd look at when you are shipping, size of the box and how much it weighs. Depending on what you pack, it may be cheaper to let the airline do it.

How did you ship it? If you are shipping something to a Disney resort, you best bet is to ship it UPS or FedEx. Do not ship via USPS. The way it was explained to me is that UPS and FedEx deliver directly to the resort, where as USPS delivers to Disney's mail handling facility and then Disney delivers it to the resort. I imagine that could take considerably more time.
