shingles: any relief remedies?

poor MIL suffering from this for past 6 weeks. she is on Neurotin,gets some small relief from ice packs, but not much else works. She doesnt want to do a nerve block but I think we may have to talk her into one. Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas that might work. thanks.

The only thing that keeps the post herpatic neuralgia under control for my Mom is the neurontin and vicodin. Some people can tolerate the lidocain patches, but my Mom's skin is too sensitive.

Lyrica was a big help to me. I sympathize. The pain is excruciating!

Is she under a stressful situation? Finances, health? stress flares my dd. As soon as she is stressed across her back to chest flares. Mine is across the shouders and clavical.

I got the vaccine at Walgreens.....hope it works.

Hope she feel better soon, my mom had it. It is very painful, not everyone knows this but there is a vaccine for shingles (Not quite sure what the percentage is for the effectiveness) they suggest it at the age of 60.

Sorry to hear that! I had shingles as a freshman in college! It was painful until the next day when I was struck with my first case of kidney stones! (Not a good health week for me!) Anyway, it ended up being perfect timing because I ended up in the hospital on so much morphine for the stones that I didn't even feel the shingles pain!

Sorry to hear that! I had shingles as a freshman in college! It was painful until the next day when I was struck with my first case of kidney stones! (Not a good health week for me!) Anyway, it ended up being perfect timing because I ended up in the hospital on so much morphine for the stones that I didn't even feel the shingles pain!

My dad has had post-herpetic neuralgia for at least 10 years. In January he started going to an acupuncturist. He is no longer in excruciating pain and now has what he calls minor discomfort. Nothing, absolutely nothing, else worked.

Well when I had shingles I was wishing I was in labor because shingles were by far the worst pain.

OH, so sorry to hear your MIL is suffering so, OP!
I got shingles twice and I was one of the lucky few that it was not excruciating bit painful and annoying non the less. Geez, when I think of all this body of mine has been thru I cringe, I am way to young for this whats it gonna be like when I am Older??? Hopefully I will be here to say, its Better!!!!

Kidney stones are by far the worst pain I've ever felt! Way worse than shingles and worse than any of my 4 deliveries! I've had lots of stone and some are worse than others. I agree, the bad ones make you think you're going to die!!!

That's what the nurse told me while I was writhing in pain on the x-ray table, that it hurt worse then labor. When the stone finally reached my bladder the pain was instantly gone, other that some minor muscle pain.

That's the weirdest part about stones. They start and stop so abruptly! That's what scares me the most about having stones. You can be fine one minute and the next minute on the floor in extreme pain!
