We brought our puppy to Petsmart yesterday and I saw their puppy special for a bath and trim. Our cavachon needed a trim realy badly. We went to make an appt and 2 shihtzus were getting groomed. We brought the puppy in today for her appt and saw 2 shihtzus getting groomed. We picked her up 2 hours later, and 2 more shistzus' were getting groomed. Last week we took a walk to the groomers near our house and saw a shihtzu in there. 2 weeks ago I was in Petco and guess what dog we saw getting groomed! So either shistzus are very popular or all the other breeds get groomed in the back room.

I had one and he was a pain in the rear to groom at home, that's probably why you are seeing so many at Petsmart.

I lived out in the country and he would always get matted with burrs. I got to the point where I would just shave him in the summer.

i adopted a Shih Tzu 4 years ago and absolutely adore her! smart, playful & affectionate .. i can see why they are a popular breed.

in the 20 or so houses in my neighbourhood, there are 5 Shih Tzus. when we walk outside the neighbourhood, we meet many more. Shih Tzu/Bichon cross breeds are also very popular in my town.

the longer, silky hair of Shih Tzus requires that she have a full grooming every 3-4 weeks as opposed to every 5-6 weeks for our Bichon & Poodle, so that may be why you see them at the salon more often.

A friend has a shih-poo, adorable, I have noticed the "designer" breed a lot lately.

My upstairs neighbor just bought a purebred shih-tzu, super cute, but another dog she won't clean up after :sad2:

OP - not trying to hijack your thread but...

Tell me about your Cavachon. That is one of my 2 choices for a dog this summer. I'm curious about size - not so much weight but actual size. Pictures would be great if you have any. :flower3:

Shih Tzu owner here! I remember seeing in a magazine that shih tzus are in to 10 ten of desired breeds. They are very hard grooming wise so we keep our dog short. Love him to death-he is the most affectionate, loyal dog Ive ever known!

I just like saying the name. I had a little boy in my class that was telling me about his dog and he didn't want to say the name because he thought he'd get in trouble. I said it for him and the rest of the class cracked up:rotfl:

Our Shih Tzu (she's 8 now) has short hair, so grooming isn't much of a problem at all. She's very friendly, never bites, and is great with little kids.

We have several friends who have them, so I think they are pretty popular.
They are the cutest dogs I've ever seen, I Shih Tzu not! :rotfl:

They're extremely popular...next to poodles. As for the pronunciation....the correct pronunciation is "sheet" not "sh it". I think folks just like to say naughty things without having the guilt associated with it.

I soo do not want to offend anyone with this post, and I truly believe that all puppies are cute, and adorable, and potentially great dogs, given the proper upbringing, whether they're poodles or pit bulls, but a Cavachon is not a breed of dog, but rather a mixed breed, between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and a Bichon Frise. Since no reputable breeder of either of these breeds would intentionally mix them, when you buy a Cavachon, you're buying a pup that was bred purely for monetary, designer dog reasons, more than likely in a puppy mill. If you don't know what a puppy mill is, google it.
So the answer is, there is no answer, a Cavachon puppy could grow up to weigh 5 lbs., or 25, it could be long legged and short bodied, or short legged and long bodied, it could be easily trained, or it could be stubborn as a mule. It could be smart as a whip or dumb as a box of rocks. It could have the tempement of an angel, or a miniature Cujo. There is no standard for them, the people who breed them are only interested in taking your money. If you want an adorable little mutt, which is exactly what Cavachons are,I suggest you go to your local pound or shelter and save a life, rather than support a terribly cruel industry, many of whose victims will end up there anyway, either to be (hopefully) adopted, or (more likely) euthanised. And it will only cost you a modest adoption fee, instead of an outrageous purchase price.

We have a mixed breed that we wouldnt trade for the world-he is a yorkie Llapso Apso mix. We love all 5 lbs of him. Shih Tzus and llapso seem very similar to me and they are both adorable!

:lmao: It's Lhasa Apso.

I knew that but really it's just my bad attempt to type fast:thumbsup2 good thing you knew what I meant.
This is so funny, and I don't mean in any way to denigrate any one, but I have heard Lapso Apso, Lahassa Apsa, not to mention rockweilers, and the one lady who filled out our registration form for her puddle, and one of my favorites, burmeses mountain dog.
I probably should delete this post, but I won't........Let me just mention that when I did the "preview post" thing, I had to go back and correct about 5 spelling errors. Hope I got them all:lmao:

Does your Shih Tzu have a brown nose? I've never seen another Shih Tzu with a brown nose before! What a cute dog your Shih Tzu is!

I agree with the others that the main reason you are seeing Shih Tzus are because they demand grooming pretty often. We get ours groomed about once every 5 weeks.

I am well aware that a Cavachon is a mixed breed. I've done the research and read plenty of info on puppy mills. Not everyone breeding mixed dogs is a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. There are good and ethical people doing it. I've also done plenty of searching on Petfinder and regularly stop at PAWS and our local shelter. So far, no small dogs or if there are any, there is a giant waiting list. Not only that but rescue groups in my area charge a lot for puppies. They also reject you based on having a small child - which i do. You are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. I will get the kind of dog I want and not feel guilty about it - either a Cavachon or a Mini-Goldendoodle.
