She's Five at Riverside - A September 2014 Trip Report (Completed 2/27)

When we left off, we were headed for Akershus after a morning at Typhoon Lagoon.

In trying to minimize walking we decided to take a unconventional transportation option to get to Akershus.

We knew it was a long walk from the front of Epcot to Norway, so we decided to hop on a bus for Hollywood Studios, then take a boat to the International Gateway entrance of Epcot. We knew it would take a while, but we had time to spare so we gave it a shot.

We left the room at 5:02 and just about walked on a HS bus at 5:06. We arrived at HS at 5:32, and were on a boat by 5:36. So far so good, but those boats aren't quick. After stops along the way we got to International Gateway at 6:15.

Allie was so tired from the busy morning she fell asleep on the boat in my lap. Her pink hair was awful while I was holding her. That stuff is nasty itchy.

We were able to transfer her to the stroller still asleep, and we had a little bit of time to explore World Showcase as we walked towards Norway.

We stopped by Japan, where we picked up a Hello Kitty plush with pink glasses on as a birthday surprise for Allie. She was still very asleep as we headed for Akershus.

I tried to wake her up a little before we got in line for our ADR but it wasn't really working and she was still super sleepy.

As we got to the front and our opportunity to take the picture with Belle she was still out, and we met the same hostess we had last year who offered to let us come back for a picture once she woke up.

We were seated and took turns going up to the cold buffet.

The Princess parade went by but Allie was still zonked.

The princesses themselves then stopped by to visit while Allie did her best Sleeping Beauty immitation.

The first one that came by was Cinderella. She understanding that Allie wasn't quite up to visiting and said she'd come by later.

It was about time to order our dinner by now. I ordered Meaty Macaroni for Allie, and I ordered the beef short ribs.

I ordered Kjottkake (Norwegian Meatballs) served on mashed potatoes. Snow White stopped by and posed for a picture with Allie.

Then the food arrived and Allie crawled up onto Melissa. We greeted Ariel, but Allie still wasn't talking.

We took some pics of the food before digging in.

Aurora stopped by and chatted with us for a while, and even sat in Allie's seat. Here you can see that Allie is thinking about waking up.

She thanked Allie for sharing her dinner which kinda disturbed Allie but it was really the best interaction of the night.

Eventually Allie woke up enough to go have her picture taken and then eat a couple of bites of dinner before dessert came.

I got Allie to start laughing by asking her why there was pink hair in my food, and if she had any idea where it might have come from. It was pretty silly, but it got her up and eating.

I really enjoyed my meal. Everything was really tasty, and it seemed somewhat fancy while still tasting really good. Meanwhile Mr. Yeti seemed to be enjoying his food too.

I think he may have stolen a couple bites of dessert. Because of Allie's sleepiness dinner seemed to take forever but by the time it was over Allie was in a good mood and we had all eaten. This is the second time we've done dinner here after a waterpark and in the future I think it's just too much. The waterparks are super tiring and an active dinner with characters is too much after a busy day.

In the end though Allie and Grandma were able to take a nice picture with Belle (who is Grandma's favorite) before we headed out to see Illuminations

While waiting for Illuminations I decided to compete for being the best Dad ever by buying Allie a light up snowflake necklace. She really liked it, and even wore it with her Elsa costume on Halloween this year.

It is probably the best money we've spent on Disney light up stuff. I think she's used it so much the batteries are getting low.

Illuminations was great as always, and I played with the camera during it to get a couple of nice shots. .

Allie really enjoyed the show as well. After it was over we hung around for EMH.

Allie had decided that she wanted to get her face painted, but when we walked by the place was closed during Extra Magic Hours, so we promised she could do it in the morning. She consoled herself by playing with some puppets at a shop.

She had fun with the puppets and we headed toward Future World.

On the way though we stopped at Mexico so Allie could again visit the Mousekameros and the tiara store.

We had heard the wait for Soarin was short, so we decided to give it a try. We have this ride in California, but Allie had never been on it.

The line was practically non existant and Allie ended up LOVING the ride.

Still excited about her newly discovered ride, Allie wanted to stop on the way out to ride Spaceship Earth one more time. We did that with Grandpa while Grandma headed for the bus stop ahead of us.

We had to leave the short line for a potty break but we were back in line and on the ride before EMH were over.

We headed out to the buses after the park had closed, and got out there about 11:10. The first bus left as we walked up, but a second one arrived about 7 minutes later and we were all able to squeeze on. We stopped first at POFQ, then arrived back at POR at 11:45. I stopped in for a now traditional late night mug refill, then posted on the DIS before going to bed.

It was another jam packed long day but super fun.

Next up: Another laid back morning before a dinner ADR.

Loving your TR. I've never been to Typhoon Lagoon, but it looks like a fun place. I know waterparks do wear you out, but I'm surprised she slept through so much of it. Looks like a fun day and night.

aw, Allie was so tired ... kind of a bummer she slept through most of Akershus but at least you got a nice picture of her and her Grandma with Belle - and on the plus side that gave her energy to make it through Illuminations and some rides after.

She looks to be really enjoying Soarin'!

Great, we're so glad that you're enjoying it. We love reliving it and going back through the pictures.

We really like Typhoon Lagoon. It is probably our favorite of the two water parks, but they are both very nice, especially if you can visit on a day that's not too crowded.

Allie played hard at the water park, and needed a bit of a nap. If she had just taken it a little earlier it would have worked better, but it was ok. Next time we'll schedule it differently.

Yeah, we're glad that she woke up and was happy enough to get to enjoy her dinner and get the Belle pic. She got to enjoy EMH too, even if they didn't have face painting. Now she definitely is a huge fan of Soarin.

Awww, She was really tired to sleep through most of Askershus... Disney will definitely do that to ya.

I didn't know there was a tiara store! How cool. Every princess needs a tiara.

I see that Allie got to wear her princess skirt for the Epcot evening. She looks cute in the picture with Cinderella. princess:

You've made a couple of trips through the Epcot resort area. That must mean that you really like it there. We like the area, too, and will find a reason to go there on every trip. We've ridden the boat from the International Gateway to DHS and it is such a long ride. I think they need an express boat. ;)

Yeah, the funny thing is she did the same thing last year, falling asleep on the bus as we pulled into Epcot. The hostess was nice though, and made sure we still got our Belle pic once she woke up.

I guess it isn't an all tiara store, but that's what Allie looks forward to in the Arribas shop near the boat ride exit in Mexico.

We really are going to buy tiaras there next time, it's on my list

Yes, it was the last hurrah for the multiple princess dress. It barely fit, but is so perfect for Akershus.

That skirt BARELY fit around her waist this year. It's such a cute skirt pattern though, I might sew her another one up soon. She loved it so much the princesses started coming off. It was ready to be retired.

We do really like that area, ever since we discovered it on our honeymoon, even though we went that whole trip not realizing how close it was to DHS. Now we find it to be a great spot to take a break. This day we just used it to avoid walking, which worked ok, but took quite a while. We would have saved more walking getting to somewhere closer to IG, since Norway is still pretty far from there. Oh well, it was a nice cruise.

Birthdays are so much better in Disney!
Yes, there is just something really neat about having every CM wish you a happy birthday, and having it noted on the ADRs was so much fun in the past that this year we really wanted to be there on the day. It worked out great, as we'll see in a couple more days.

The best part was being there long enough to really spread out the fun. :cool1:

Thanks for joining in. :thumbsup2

I like how this chapter starts off with Allie pushing her stroller and quickly progresses to Allie being firmly planted in said stroller to then being out cold for the koldtbord!

This is my favorite quotation: "We had heard the wait for Soarin was short." I never knew you could just walk right on Soarin. It's great that you took advantage of that. What time of day was it?

"Our" table at Akershus was right behind Melissa. It was the half booth along the window. The booth was extremely low and had rips all over it. I'm glad you were seated at a table, but maybe they had repaired the booth by September.

Yes, that shows the benefits of the stroller, she can push it until she falls asleep, then there's somewhere to put her while she's out.

With the 9:00 Illuminations and regular park closing, about 10:30 PM was the perfect time for Soarin. The sign out front said like a 5 or 10 minute wait, and we walked through the entire line up to the bottom of the ramp where you get into separate lines for each row. It was as close to a walk on as we've ever seen. As we left Mexico to head over there we heard a group of people walking the other direction talking about how empty Soarin was, so we decided to go over and check it out for ourselves.

That's too bad your table wasn't great. We did much better this year than last, when we were in the middle of the same room where it looked like they had stuffed in an extra table. This year there was not a table right there, which allowed more room for everyone to move around. The princess interaction was great though, and we really enjoyed the food, especially the plated meals.

Great TR and what a trip you had!
We have a little girl too, so enjoying reading your trip experience.:)

That's great, welcome! :goodvibes The trips are just so much fun, and reliving them through the TR is neat too. We're glad you're enjoying it as well.

I woke up about 7:15 and was ready to start the day, so I headed out with my Mug for a morning walk. I saw a service boat delivering Cast Members to the smaller island next to Old Man Island.

I was determined to find the North bus depot, and I did make it there, but the walk reminded me a lot of the trip between WL and FW.

It probably wasn't that far, but close. It took a good 10 minutes from our room.

Then I hung out by the bike rental area and watched people starting their day.

I headed back to the room about 8:40 and Melissa was starting to work on getting up. I then headed to Fulton's for bug bite cream and bought the only POR specific merchandise item I could find, a painting of the resort. (We have similar ones of WL, so I decided to add POR to our collection.)

I got some nasty mosquito bites this time. I don't remember getting bit previous years. I think maybe the nighttime boat rides and the closer proximity to the water contributed. Our plan this morning was to hit WPE for breakfast and I was really looking forward to it.

Allie started stirring about 9:30, and the first thing she said when she sat up in bed was that she almost forgot her face painting. We got dressed and headed to the boat dock, but didn't arrive there until about 10:30.

Then we had to wait for the next boat. While waiting Allie made friends with little girl who was on her way for her BBB appointment.

Allie had fun with her new friend, and they sat together for the whole boat ride.

We got to the DTD dock at 11:05 and headed straight to Wolfgang Puck Express, but found that we had missed breakfast. We went ahead and ordered lunch, and knew we'd have to get up earlier in order to make it there in time for breakfast, so that's still on our to do list.

I was pretty disappointed but that just leaves more to do next time. Allie and I shared a cheese pizza and fruit.

Grandpa and I both had meatloaf sandwiches, which were excellent. Grandma had pizza as well and enjoyed it too. After we ate, the next important must do was to find face painting. Allie had become very excited about this, and was glad the time had finally come.

She picked out a Princess Kitty design and it really didn't take that long. She was THRILLED with the result.

After that we did some more shopping. We checked out the new CoOp store, where Laura, a very friendly cast member saw Allie's Baloo dress and gave her a Baloo pin.

While there Melissa saw some nice new Dooney and Burke purses, and found a cute little one she wanted. Grandpa Jim offered to buy it for her, as a way of showing Grandma and Grandpa's appreciation of all her effort in planning and setting up the trip.

It was super sweet, and very nice of them. The purse is cute too.

It is a cute purse and I really love it, it was super nice of them to buy it for me. Now that Allie had collected a couple of pins we decided she needed a lanyard, plus we wanted to get some pins to take home for friends so we headed over to the pin store.

Allie picked out a lanyard and some pins, I got a new Run Disney lanyard for my keys, which I still haven't switched over to yet.

Allie also picked out Anna and Elsa pins, because no collection would be complete without those, and they actually had them. Then Grandma and Grandpa headed back to the resort for some rest before the evening at Magic Kingdom. We had planned on visiting Animal Kingdom a second time during the early afternoon, but since it was so late we decided to just visit some monorail resorts instead. On the way to the buses, we stopped by the T-Shirt store.

Allie stopped and designed her own T-Shirt, and she really enjoyed it.

She decided that she wanted that as a souvineer for the trip and wanted it more than a new doll or anything. So she put the whole Frozen gang on there with her name and the year.

We ordered it and headed to the Grand Floridian.

We got in line for the Grand Floridian bus at 1:35. We then saw the same little girl we had met on the boat, after getting her BBB makeover. We got on the bus at 1:44, and then it traveled to Typhoon Lagoon, where it was the last resort direct bus, since it got there right at 2:00. As we had discovered earlier in the trip, after 2:00 guests had to connect to resorts via Epcot. Then our bus stopped at Wilderness Lodge at 2:16, then finally arrived at the Grand Floridian at 2:23, 48 minutes after we got in line at DTD. Oh well, it was a nice ride and the bus wasn't too crowded. By now we were ready for some more food, so we headed to Gasparilla Grill.

On the way from the bus stop to lunch we spotted a couple taking wedding pictures. It was pretty sweet to get a glimpse of their special day.

Once inside I ordered the Cuban Panini and Allie got Chicken nuggets with Apple sauce. The Cuban was delicious and I highly recommend it.

I tried the Grand Gaspy burger that I had been looking forward to for a year, because you gotta love pulled pork as a burger topping. It was good, but not Disney's best QS burger in my opinion. Surprisingly I still preferred the regular cheeseburger at Roaring Fork or those at POR. We got some great cupcakes for dessert, and they were all delicious.

While we were eating Melissa's Dad called and explained that we were buying a new boat. It is a long story, but the deal came together while we were in Florida, so he arranged it and all we had to do was pay for it once we got home, which involves a complex chain of selling our old boat and some other toys, but it was good news that we were getting the new boat we wanted, and gave us a bit of a reason to look forward to returning to normal life.

After we ate we went exploring around the shops at the Grand Floridian, because last year we were here late at night after most of them had closed. We also enjoyed checking out the lobby, where a singer was performing.

Allie had fun picking out charms for a charm necklace using her birthday gift card money.

The charm necklace came out super cute and she really enjoyed looking for new charms the rest of the trip. She liked doing that more than buying pins. After some more browsing in the Basin store and enjoying the Grand Floridian lobby we hopped on the monorail on our way to the Magic Kingdom. Paul was pretty excited when the green one pulled into the station.

Green is my favorite. :) As we rode the monorail we got a text from Grandma and Grandpa saying that they were just getting off the bus at Magic Kingdom, so we were all set to meet up for an evening in the park.

and that will be continued in the next update...

We interrupt this regularly scheduled Trip Report to bring you: Our Trip Video!

This year we remembered to take more video clips, and Melissa put them together into a video summary of the trip.

I actually remembered to capture some video this year and I caught some pretty priceless moments.

We hope you all enjoy it and have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

You can check it out at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9D4nL7snCw

Catching up on your last couple of updates.

Typhoon lagoon sure looks like a fun day. I haven't been there since the late 90s when my brother worked there in the college program. It looks like the kids area at least is similar to blizzard beach. How do you all think it compares?

Poor Allie falling asleep for Akerhaus. At least she woke up to see Belle. And major score on the frozen necklace. I never saw that while we were there but wish we had. Glad she got some extra Halloween mileage out of it too.

I so need to follow your lead next trip and sleep late and enjoy time outside of the parks. Looks much more enjoyable than the mad scramble we are often on. Love Allies face paint. My daughter saw me looking at it and though she was sheriff callie ; ).

Keep the updates coming, can't wait for more.

Isn't the Co-op store awesome?! I wanted everything!!

I wish I would've thought about getting married at Disney- like why didn't I?!! Lol

I love wandering around the GF. I'll never be able to afford to stay there- but I can visit :)
