She's Five at Riverside - A September 2014 Trip Report (Completed 2/27)

I'm in! Birthdays at Disney World are magical - I can't wait to see what Allie thought about celebrating her birthday there! princess:

I'm sorry you didn't love Via Napoli - I agree it can get a little noisy. During our last visit there we were seated in the little glass-windowed room to the front right of the restaurant and that was a lot more quiet. (It's on your right side as you're walking into the restaurant, just behind the outdoor tables.) If you're able to request a table next time, perhaps you could ask to sit there? Also, I would highly recommend the spaghetti - it's great!

I'm looking forward to more!
Welcome! We moved this year's trip by a week so that she could be there on her birthday, and it worked out well.

No need to apologize for Via Napoli, we really enjoyed the food and would go back, it just wasn't the most enjoyable meal of this trip for us. It actually shows how great our other experiences were. Thanks for the suggestion of the quieter seating location. We both tried Allie's spaghetti, and it was delicious.

Allies dress is adorable. Can't believe she got to wear it for 3 trips. Mine can't make it a season without growing out of everything ; )

Yum, may favorite via Napoli pizza ever. Glad you all enjoyed it, though Via is definitely not the place for a nice quiet meal. I opted for the artichoke and truffle this time and missed my prosciutto oh so much.

And glad you all made it over to the boardwalk bakery, it is definitely worth the trip. And totally agree the walk to MGM is much closer than anticipated.

Gearing up for day 3....
Thank you. In the time she's had that dress she has outgrown everything else, but that's one benefit of it being home made. It was quite big on her the first year, and a little small this time, but it was quite adjustable so it still worked well.

The pizza was impressive and unique, and that is a cool thing. Our mouths water looking at the pictures.

We do love the location of the Epcot resorts. Even when we're not staying there we love visiting and relaxing for a bit, usually while hopping between Epcot and HS. :thumbsup2

That is a really cute dress. I'm glad she was able to wear it for three trips. There will be plenty of fond memories, too. :)
Yes, and that's one dress that isn't going to the consignment sale.

Test Track is one of my favorites, too. Kids seem to like the real cars a lot more.
I loved looking at the real cars there before it was Test Track, and I still do. We sat in a Suburban that was really nice... :)

We've eaten at Via Napoli twice and we have an ADR for our next trip. The first time we ate there we had an amazing time. Our waiter was great. He was lively and funny and he made the whole experience feel special. I think we had the pepperoni pizza, although I would have loved to have tried the prosciutto and melon. The second time we ate there we had a normal waiter, good but not exciting. The waiter can really make a big difference.
We totally agree. Thinking back, it took all of us a little while to figure out what the waitress had said. Perhaps it was a little too authentic for the first full day.

One of the nice things about our September trip was that we were there for the final days of things like the Maelstrom. I'm glad we had a chance to ride it before it was gone. We even watched the little movie afterwords. :)
Yeah, it was good to finally catch it. We know people are upset with change, but we'll see what Disney comes up with. Their track record is pretty good.

The Mousekamaeros is cute. And I think I need a tiara to wear around Disney. It would be so much fun. princess:
We could start a trend. Mousekamaero tiaras!

We were walking on the Boardwalk when the Frozen fireworks started. We noticed that you could watch them in the reflection on the Dolphin resort. It was kind of neat. :)

We love the walk from the Epcot resorts to DHS. This last trip I think we walked it at least 6 times. We beat the boat almost every time, too.

What a nice first day you had. :goodvibes
We first saw the fireworks in the reflection of the Dolphin as well. It was a neat effect.

I can't believe that during our honeymoon trip we had no idea how close Epcot and HS were, or that there were even boats between them. Walking the path is great, although the boats are fun too if you aren't in a hurry.

What a precious dress! I LOVE IT. Since I have two boys, we don't get to do the whole dressing up thing but I sure hope that one day we will be able too.. <3

That pizza looks SOOOOOO good. Especially the prosciutto one.. I could go for a pizza right about now.

The Boardwalk area is SO nice. I also love the Beach Club. I wish we could afford to do deluxe and stay there. Maybe one of these days!

Grandma Nancy had to wait 30 years to have a girl to dress up, and she's enjoying it now.

Someday maybe we'll stay at an Epcot resort, but we have really enjoyed visiting them on the way through. Bring your mugs and hang out like a local. :)

Looks like a very nice meet with Minnie - and I agree with her, very good job on the dress! :thumbsup2

I don't ever want to get to an age when a manatee farting isn't funny :rotfl2:

Love the model trains - and I love how they decorate it for different seasons and put up tiny Food & Wine Festival booths, etc.

Glad you got to ride Maeltrom one last time ... great picture of Allie with the troll too :rotfl:

Sorry you didn't like Via Nappoli more - though I can see with it being towards the end of a full first day and being loud and probably feeling a bit cramped at a 4 top and then having trouble understanding the waitress it just not being the best experience ... glad you still enjoyed the food though!

Man, you really can see those Frozen Fireworks from everywhere! We saw them from the front of the Word Showcase after Illuminations ended when we were there in August

What great photos! Wonderful seeing "THE DRESS" for the last time. It might have been my favorite, but then they all seem like my favorite at some point:scratchin

Those crazy manatees, I could watch them all day eating lettuce, but I think I need to watch more closely next time for some added entertainment;)

You got a great close-up BWB phood photo that is much better than mine. Can I use it in the DINING section on the BWI thread when I re-post it soon?

Your little girl is really adorable, and that dress is so cute!

We had a lukewarm experience at Via Napoli, but I'd like to try it again. I think it was a combination of one of us not feeling well, along with me being tired. It was also our first time there, and it could be that I had unrealistically high expectations after hearing so many good things about it.

Loving your report so far, and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. :thumbsup2

Love it, neither do we!

We love checking out the trains, and had fun in Norway too. Allie really thought the trolls were neat.

Yeah, we loved the food but we just had different expectations for the meal overall. It didn't make the perfect combination of time and location, but the pizza was excellent.

It is funny, we never made it to HS to see the Frozen Fireworks, but we noticed them multiple times from wherever we happened to be.

Thanks, we're glad you are enjoying the pics. We really enjoy hanging out at the Seas, and could spend a lot longer just watching them swim (and whatever else) especially the manatees.

Feel free to use any of our pics wherever you want, no problem at all. Here's a couple more Boardwalk Bakery ones we didn't use in the TR:

Thank you. We think she's adorable, but we're biased. ;)

It is interesting that you had a similar experience at Via Napoli. I think we had worked it up to be something different in our heads, and wanted something a little more relaxing. We too would go back for the food though, and now we know what to expect.

We're glad you are following along and hope you enjoy the rest of it, there is a lot more to come.

I woke up at 5:45AM, because I was excited and didn't want to oversleep, even though we had set the alarm for 7:00. I played online a little bit, then got up and took a shower. Then I headed out with the camera to get some more early morning pictures.

I also got some shots of the totally empty lobby:

Then I headed back to the room:

I brought coffee back for Melissa, and we ate some donuts that I had bought at Fulton's the night before so we could have a quick breakfast. Allie didn't want to get up, but we got her moving somewhat, at least enough to get her dressed.

By some dumb luck Animal Kingdom EMH fell on the second full day of our trip. Being from the west coast and not fully time adjusted yet along with not being early risers in general made dragging out of bed difficult. I do enjoy morning EMH at AK more than any other park (maybe because we haven't experienced them at any of the other parks yet).

That's true, we are not "rope drop" people and we haven't made it to any other park early. AK is nice though because we can do the safari ride early and get a different perspective on it than we'd get later in the day.

I enjoyed having my coffee delivered every morning and Paul nailed the cream and sugar every day. I wonder what would happen if I left my resort mug out on the kitchen counter tonight...

Hmm, mental note taken, it might be flashback inducing though since we are going to Disneyland tomorrow morning. It will feel just like vacation, at least until we get on the freeway.

We made our way out of the room and to the bus stop without much drama or fuss. Allie was still super sleepy though.

We got to the bus stop just before 8:00, and the neat message board showed a bus was to arrive at 8:02.

It showed up, and we all were able to get on. It still had to make the loop to the other stops, so by the time it did we left POR at 8:12 and got to AK by 8:30.
By now Allie was back asleep, so we took a leisurely walk into the park and did some shopping.

We also had a PhotoPass picture taken of all of us.

We made our way toward the safari ride but by the time we got to it she was still snoozing so we opted to walk the Pangani trail. She woke up almost as soon as we started that. It was a great walk though and we got a great view of a male Silverback.

I was disappointed that there was construction going on and wouldn't get to see my favorite the Okapi.

Yeah, they had the entrance part of the trail closed and you actually walked it backwards, starting from the end up until the area with the meerkats, where it ended and you had to turn around and go back out. It was pretty cute when Allie woke up. She sat straight up in her stroller, looked around, and said " I know this place!" From then on she was awake and happy.

The meerkats were super active and we enjoyed watching them zoom in and out of their burrows.

Since she was up, we were now ready for our safari ride. We were still in our fastpass window, because the park had just opened to the public at 9:00.

The standby line wasn't too bad but it was nice to use the fastpass and get on even a little sooner. Get ready for lots of the ubiquitous animal pictures....

It wouldn't be appropriate to cover the Safari ride without them, so here's our pics:

The elephants were spraying water all over the place and being so cute.

Our driver did a good job, and by some miracle we survived. After that we walked over to do the Maharaja Jungle trek so that grandma could see the bats. She has a thing for bats, but had never made it in to see them here.

In the bat enclosure they have a small monitor of some sort who I'm sure gets mostly ignored by the people watching the bats. He was super interested in Allie and played with her through the glass.

He was pretty cool. Then we went on to look for Tigers, but the one we got the best view of was painted.

Allie loved these paintings two years ago and insisted on posing infront of them all then... This time I had to ask her to do nicely in my best "you will do this for your mother because I said so" voice. Here is a throwback to two years ago...

After the trail Grandma was ready for a break, and we had Fastpass + for Expedition Everest, so Grandma stayed with Allie in the shade while Grandpa, Melissa, and I headed for Everest. Unfortunately the ride was super quiet, as it had been shut down. Cast Members said they didn't know when it would reopen, but our fastpasses would be good for the rest of the day.
We waited around for a while, but it didn't show any signs of reopening so instead Grandpa and I posed for a picture.

Paul and I also stopped for a photopass picture which ended up being one of my favorites of the two of us from the trip.

We also checked out the dump shop. The theming in this shop is amazing. I hadn't ever stopped to really appreciate it before.

After we had waited for a couple minutes we went back to Grandma and Allie who were hanging out outside our lunch destination, Yak and Yeti.

We were still a little early, but we decided to go on in. Allie barely had time to get a penny pressed in the waiting area before they called us back.

We got a great table in the front room.

Lunch was delicious as usual. Allie had a hard time deciding what she wanted for lunch and settled on chicken strips then changed her mind to noodles. I forgot and ordered the chicken for her. When it came out she was upset but they took the chicken back without question and brought out noodles.

They handled Allie's ordering confusion really well, and our meals were excellent. I again had the ribs and they were amazing. I love when ribs are tender enough to fall off the bone, and these did, along with having a unique smoky yet Asian flavor. They were great, and this might have been my favorite meal of the trip, although it had some close competition.

I got the honey chicken. They were really good but again I should have ordered the ribs.

I shared the chicken with Melissa in exchange for some ribs and it was great, but probably not worth missing the ribs for.

Anywhere else I would totally order it though. Dessert was great as well.

We got the fried wontons and a mango pie for dessert. While I love the fried wontons which get a lot of accolades here on the boards I have to profess my love for the Mango Pie here.

I might get stoned for this but I think I prefer it slightly to the wontons.

Both desserts were really good, and I am surprised you don't hear more good things about the Mango pie. It might be similar to the Honey chicken vs. the ribs, in my opinion both are good but the wontons are so good that I wouldn't give them up.

I am glad that we can share the two desserts so we get both.

After lunch we left the restaurant stuffed full, and Grandma decided to head back to the resort. We decided that now would not be the best time for Expedition Everest, so we decided to let the food settle a bit and walked toward the front of the park. On the way we saw something cool right over our heads, but that will be in the next update.

Great picture across the lake of the Mill!

I didn't realize they had the monitors with the arrival times at POR - I've only seen mention of them at the Deluxe's so that is good to know!

I love the jungle treks and think they go under appreciated. We didn't get to see any live tigers our last trip either (they said there was a new tiger still be acclimated so when she was out the others wouldn't be allowed out and I guess she was good at hiding)

Lunch looks/sounds really good! I actually would never order the wantons because I can't stand cream cheese so anything with that in the description gets nixed - so I support your views of the Mango Pie :thumbsup2

She grew quite a bit in two years!

The pic of the two of you is quite cute.

I'm just joining you. It's funny I was at WDW celebrating my DD's 5th birthday. I was at MK on 9/16 so we may have walked right passed each other!

I LOVE :lovestruc the dress Allie wore to Epcot! Beautiful. My favorite M&Gs with Minnie always end up being at the Epcot character spot.

Can't wait to hear more!

Thanks, I love taking resort pictures at WDW, especially early in the morning. The bus times display was really neat. It is relatively new, but was generally very accurate. One time it showed a really late arrival for a bus we were waiting for, but it soon updated to what turned out to be an accurate value. I think getting these at all resorts will do a lot to ease people's frustration with WDW buses.

With your cream cheese aversion the Mango Pie is an excellent Y&Y dessert choice. :thumbsup2

Thanks, she really did grow up, and each year she has more and more input to what we do on the trip. Back then she just went where we pointed, now she has grown an opinion.

Welcome! It is neat to have another follower who was there at the same time. It would be so cool if you showed up in one of the pictures, but the chances are still probably pretty slim. It is fun to think that we might have been in the same crowd. At least since it was September it was a smaller crowd, you do have to love that.

Happy birthday to your DD and welcome to the report. :wave2:

Beautiful morning pictures of POR!

We are thinking of booking offsite ( I know,) for our February trip just to save some money and looking at these pics make me not want too. It's hard to beat a Disney resort.

Allie must have been super tired. Poor girl! Disney does that to ya!

Love her AK themed Disney outfit!

She is really out of it. This is why I wish my daughter would bring a stroller with her to WDW next week. I think Luke will be a sleepy head a few times, too. :)

Thanks! We followed as you considered an off site stay before one of your earlier trips, and rooted for you getting to stay onsite. We truly love being "in the bubble" and talk about going to "Disney" and not "Florida". Sometime we might stay offsite, but I think we would look harder at either renting points or staying at a value resort onsite first.

Allie isn't a morning person anyway, and East coast time doesn't help with that. Fortunately she is a good stroller sleeper.

It is fun and easy to come up with AK themed items for her to wear.

That Mango pie looks amazing! I think I was a good idea to get both!

Whenever faced with a choice between different desserts, BOTH is our favorite option! :thumbsup2

I love your early morning pictures. :)

Yes, we still love having the stroller.
Even if she doesn't ride in it all the time, it folds easily and we can leave it parked somewhere or Allie will often help push it. Oh well, if worst comes to worse there is always the option of a rental.

That is a very nice picture. :)

Thanks, we liked it. We got a lot of Photo Pass pics this time.

One of these days I'm going to try those ribs. They look delicious. And the mango pie looks better than the wontons. ::yes::

You should have an opportunity coming up in about 8 days or so... Have a great trip to WDW, and enjoy WL, even if you don't make it Yak&Yeti. If you do get the chance though, I definitely say it is worth giving the ribs a shot.

Don't say that too loud about the wontons, they have a very strong group of supporters, especially on the food threads. :duck: I thought both were excellent desserts.

What beautiful early morning pictures!

It's too bad the tigers were MIA, but at least you got a nice picture of the gorilla.

I'm such a big Yak and Yeti fan. It's so nice to eat out of the sun (and in the air conditioning). My sister is right there with you on the Mango pie - she thought it was great! :thumbsup2

Thanks, POR was beautiful, especially early in the morning. We had lots of great views of animals, especially considering that part of the Pangani trail was closed, so missing the Tigers was no big deal.
Yak and Yeti was great, and might be our favorite in park restaurant, and is a serious contender for our favorite on property. It is good to hear that the Mango pie gets some love too.

When we left off, we were walking over the bridge from Asia toward the front of Animal Kingdom. As we walked, we noticed some birds flying over our heads. I mean just over our heads, less than 8 feet off the ground.

There was a group of macaws free flying right by us! It was amazing to see them flying. We talked to a CM who said they do this twice a day and that they'd be doing it again so we decided to add that to our schedule. We made our way over to Dinoland where Allie wanted to "dig out the bones"

We had discovered this play area last year, and Allie wanted to go back to it. Relaxing in the shade sounded good to us, so that's where we headed. This year Allie was so much more independent, and even did the big tube slides by herself.

It is so nice to just stand at the bottom of the playground and let her go play on her own. She's pretty independent when we take her to our local parks too and this was no different. She got to go up and down while we just chilled in the shade.

Then we crossed over to the digging side, and Allie got a bucket and started to dig. As other kids left, there were extra buckets around, so she started lining them up in a straight row. It was pretty funny to watch. She would get upset if Grandpa or I moved a bucket out of line, and it became a game for her to keep as manu buckets lined up as she could.

She can be very particular about these things. While we were there a kid actually fell asleep laying amongst the mammoth bones it was pretty amusing. We let Allie play for quite a while then it was almost time for the second macaw flight of the day so we emptied shoes and went back over to watch that.

The flight was to be at 2:00, so we headed to the area near where we had seen the birds before and arrived with a couple minutes to spare. They had the birds out and were talking to guests before they sent them on their flight. They flew right over our heads, and we got some pictures.

After seeing the birds, we headed for Expedition Everest to see if it was up and running yet.

Luckily it was, since we didn't have Grandma with us to watch Allie we opted to do a baby swap.

Grandpa and I rode first, and the fastpass line was super short. We were on in under five minutes and had a fun ride. I do really enjoy this roller coaster, it is probably my favorite at WDW.

Then it was my turn. I don't know if I had mentioned it earlier in this report or not but I showed up to Disney World with a bit of a head cold and had taken some cold medicine earlier in the day. Normally I love this roller coaster but riding it with medicine head was slightly uncomfortable.

You were also video recording it on your phone for one of the guys at work, so that might have added to the distraction. When we got off, we met back up with Grandpa who had offered to buy Allie a stuffed Yeti. Since we already have one at home, we convinced her to get a little one, which came with a care and feeding manual. She was super excited about the concept of adopting a baby Yeti.

She also did her Yeti imitation:

Baby Yeti was the hit of the trip and ended up coming with us on our adventures every day.

Next up we had one more "must do" at AK, taking the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch so that Allie could pet some Goats. Visiting the goats is one of her favorite things to do at Disneyland, and she even has her favorite Goat (a black one named Stitch).

We had to take a potty break before we got started. The signs about poop in the bathroom stalls crack me up and Allie made me read not only the one in our stall but we had to visit the other ones as well.

Well, hopefully you learned something, or if not at least had a bit of a chuckle. This ranked right up there with Manatee bubbles... We spent a lot of time looking around and taking pictures inside (which was nice since it was nice and cool in there.)

Allie insisted on kissing that darned rhino and made my mommy germaphobe sirens start going off.

Then we moved outside to the main attraction, and Allie got to spend almost an hour visiting with goats (and pigs, a cow, and even a donkey).

After washing up Allie wanted to meet two more critters, and we stood in line for a picture with Chip and Dale.

The character interaction here was so cute. Allie had fun with them and we got cute pictures.

Then we hopped on the train right at 5:00 to start our trip out of the park. At the train station Allie continued posing for pictures.

We got some more photopass pictures on the way out. Allie insisted on getting one with Grandpa.

She was in a very photogenic mood this afternoon. At this point Grandpa decided to head to our resort to meet back up with Grandma before dinner, and we were headed to Animal Kingdom Lodge for some Zebra Domes.

We had to wait for a second bus to arrive, since the first AKL bus filled up. Fortunately it wasn't too long of a wait, and we got on the bus at 5:38, then arrived at Jambo at 5:55.

We were all three in need of a snack. Allie picked out a Zebra cupcake and Paul and I got Zebra domes to share. We also refilled our resort mugs. We settled in at a table close to the TV so Allie could watch the cartoons and so we could just zone out for a bit.

A manager of some sort sat down with his lunch adjacent to us and we noticed there was a lot of chatter on his radio.

Then it started beeping and he stood up and started asking everyone to leave the building... The Cast Members quickly directed everybody out of the building and into the pool courtyard area. We figured we'd be back in within a couple of minutes, but were in for an unexpected adventure.

Continued in next update.

It looks like you had a really nice day at AK. We never seem to fill a whole day there, but then we don't play in the Boneyard or brush the goats. :upsidedow Allie seemed to love everything about the day. The dress fits her perfectly for this trip.

I hope you were able to finish your snacks before the unexpected adventure began.

Ooooh an adventure that starts with being told to leave a building. Interesting!:surfweb:
