How stupid is she. Sometimes I wonder whether people should sit an IQ test before being allowed to travel by themselves!

....... so naive! Did she really expect them all to find her comment funny??? Very silly.

I couldn't believe it when I heard this on the radio - at these "times" what on earth was she thinking ?

I agree, stupid remark, obviously a dumb kid. Should let her sit in cell for a few days and send her packing. I'm afraid this may have an impact on her visa though. No?

heard this on the news this morning & couldn't believe my ears!

Especially when they said she'd repeated it twice when it was questioned.

 I hadn't heard that part Sue - oh my goodness.

Heard on the news this morning that the minimum jail sentence for this offence is one year. Seems like she is going to pay a high price for a joke.

That's the trouble with minimum sentence requirements - they take no account of the actual crime. There's a world of difference between falsely and maliciously reporting a bomb threat, and making a joke in poor taste and questionably judgement. This girl, stupid as she has been, clearly falls into the latter case and locking her up for a year is way OTT. Hopefully she will be an example (of what not to do!) for everybody else.

Rob

I don't think her American boyfriend will be too chuffed, she probably won't be allowed back in to the usa to visit him.

I saw the on sky news.
She is a very silly girl, at a time like this, after 9/11, and with all the goings on in this world, and she says a stupid stupid comment how did she think they would react?

Oh dear, yes she is a very very silly girl - but as the mum of a son (of about the same age) who sometimes says REALLY STUPID things in the most inappropriate situations I just feel so sorry for the (silly, silly) girl. And I can't even begin to imagine how her parents must be feeling. I know it's absolutely no joke in these times and she must face the consequences of being so daft, but my heart goes out to her (and her mum!)

...." your heart goes out to her"....... ??????

Me, I'm more concerned for the poor folk behind the half-wit who were doubtless terrified at what was happening.

As far as I'm concerned the idiot deserves whatever she gets, she was given two opportunities to withdraw/change her comment and instead chose to repeat it.

What inconvenience and consternation must she have caused......and we're talking about a country where only 2 years ago innocent people as young as 8 years old were hijacked and hurtled into oblivion, and thousands of other innocents died an horrific death.....do you think our American friends will regard her as just being a " silly girl "

...........................Ddoohhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, perhaps that was a bit OTT saying my heart goes out to her so I shall rephrase it by saying that I can feel a smidgeon of sympathy for anyone who acting in an immature and stupid way, because in fact they ARE very young and immature, ends up completely out of their depth. Yes, she should suffer the consequences but she's not evil and she's not wicked, at least I don't think so. She says (according to Sky News) that she was joking with the officer who was checking her bags, and it was part of a conversation rather than a bald statement. He didn't hear what she said at first (hence the repetition) and as soon as she saw his face she realised what a stupid thing she'd said. Haven't we all at some time in our lives opened our mouths and put a size nine in?? I know I have. OK, never in quite so spectacularly a stupid fashion, but I've done it, and as I said in my other post, I have a 21 year old son who often opens his mouth before putting his brain in gear.

And I still feel really sorry for her parents.

....... it is incredible how many people do make "jokes" about this Libby - DH (who has been flying fairly frequently lately) and I have heard it over and over at airports so goodness knows how many times security etc have to put up with it.

(We were in a check in line for New York and a group in front of us were freely discussing who in their view in the check-in line were the most likely terrorists and joking about those people's luggage) - I was SO hoping that someone from the airport or airline was listening but unfotrunately they weren't.

Jubileegirl - sorry it isn't on a more lighthearted thread but I'd like to welcome you to the DIS and I look forward to more of your posts :)
