She called it "The Trolley"

My mom has been to WDW 3 times...last time was in 2002 and she stayed at AS-Sports, first time on property. My mom says and does her stereotypical "mom" things, but I thought she was better than this!

As I was telling her about POFQ, where I just booked us to stay on our summer family trip, she asked if it was on the "trolley" because she and my dad had figured out the "trolley system" in 2002. :confused3 The trolley? Ok, so I thought she meant the bus system because she still hadn't mastered the concept that yes, busses go to and from ALL the Disney resorts, not select ones. Ok, so I asked what she was talking about, to which she replied, "You know, the trolley that takes you to EPCOT and the Magic Kingdom." YOU MEAN THE MONORAIL??!!! :crazy2:

Yes, she meant the monorail. Please pray for my sanity to stay in tact during our 7 day family trip since the "mom comments" are already starting. And she is a well-educated lady who knows darn well it is a monorail and not a stinking trolley . Gotta love her, but oh my.... :earseek:

I have no idea how old your mom is, but you might want to cut her a little slack. I'm 53 years old and the name of things I've known all my life just don't come to me anymore. It is like I've run out of storage capacity and some things had to be shipped offsite. I try to recall the name of something or someone and it just doesn't come to me. An hour later, it will just pop into my head. It is like the messanger service finally returned with the answer. This has happened to a lot of my friends. It is one of the joys of aging!

It's okay - I feel for you - really.

My Dad is forever calling Epcot - EXPO (we eent to expo back in 86 and I guess the name just stuck with him).

On this past trip on the drive to WDW, everytime either my parents or god daughter would ask something about "Disneyland" (What hotel are we staying at in Disneyland? I really want to ride Mission Space at Disneyland!) I would reply - "It'll be a long time before we get there, since it's in California!"

(and I had taken my parents to WDW just last Feb too!)

Gotta love parents. I am actually looking forward to all the crazy comments my Mom is likely to make next year. I'm just so excited that she agreed to join us that she could probably call the big guy "Matty Mouse" and I wouldn't care. The trolley . . . I love it!

Unless you are use to traveling with your Mom, I would think twice about taking her with you. I went on a girls only (me, Mom, and my two daughters) in FEb. of 2003. I wanted to strangle her. Her comments and *****ing about ruined the trip. To make matters worse, she was recently hinting that she would like to join again. NO WAY!!!

I'm sorry you had a bad time with your mom. I'd give anything if my mom had lived long enough to see WDW.

The Trolley :rotfl2: gotta love it. My nana says things like that all the time. If just cracks me up and causes me to shake my head. :confused3 My fave nana thing that she says is when she asks about a famous person and it goes like that....."whats that guys name? you know the one.....my fave (singer/actor/news man) that one guy.....come on, can't you remember his name? it should be easy, hes my fave. Well, let me know when you can remember who he is." Gotta love nana.

I really LOL over this! My mom is forever doing this kind of thing:

she calls Shades of Green "Greensleeves," and Pizzafari is "Pizza Fairy." You get the picture. We just laugh -- we've actually made a joke out it. :rotfl2:

Oh, and she likes to sing. Except, she doesn't sing the word she "dee dee dee dees." Now that will drive you crazy! :rotfl2: :rolleyes1 :cool1:

I'm sure some moms are really suffering from having an old memory (or as my dad likes to say, CRS), but I'd be willing to bet most of these ladies are just "forgetting" these names to either amuse you (or her) or drive you crazy.

My great-aunt does this with everything and it drives my mom crazy! So then I wonder why she does it? But I think she does it sometimes just to get a reaction out of us.

I'm very grateful that my parents want to make WDW their first big trip after retirement. My mom is so darn excited to get to AK to see Lion King and the Safari again because it rained the day they went in 2002. I know it will be a great trip....

but the trolley ?????? That one was just too much! :earboy2:

Maybe when you guys get onto the monorail together you can all break out into that Judy Garland song from Meet Me in St Loius......"Bang Bang Bang went the Trolley, ding ding ding went the bell......." You get the idea. Could be mighty funny.

Yea I can't wait until MOM comes with us on our 1st trip home (SSR 2 bdrm hope she might spring for some points money) .She comes in the other night with I think I lost my (your ) cell phone .

I hit it up (nextel ) Not IN Service .
I ask was it on ?
Maybe battery might have been dead!!!
I call Nex and go and hand her another phone .
I'll try not to lose this one she says.
I say good your not getting my new one.

GOTS to love the MOM's

I hate to say it, but it's one of the little known side effects of menopause. I never realized that back when I used to tease my mom for some of the comments she'd make, but after having a hysterectomy and going into surgical menopause I learned quickly that memory loss is a major side effect. I used to go crazy trying to remember the most simple of words, I would rack my brain and get annoyed at myself.

So true. I also have surgically induced menopause. One of my most embarrassing moments came in a restaurant. I wanted some cottage cheese, but could not remember the name of it. Crazy! I finally asked for some of that runny white curdled stuff and the server brought me cottage cheese. LOL!

My mother-in-law went to WDW once in 1974, and won't go back. Reason, she's "already been there once, what could possibly change?"

This is the same woman who rode thru the city of Buffalo and commented that it sure looked different that her last visit. Foolishly I asked "when was that?" She answered "in 1947, right after WW2". :rotfl:

i understand - DBF and i are heading down to orlando in a few months, and he keeps commenting that he's so excited about going to Disneyland ;) ah whatever, i'm just glad he's excited!

I love the "off site storage" for memory LOL Oh the joys we have to look forward too.

I think it's a parent's job to drive us kids batty. Mom if your reading this be warned or it's the balcony for you! LOL But it's ok cause kids can get even, come next week when she's fretting over the flight to see Mickey I can constantly remind her of how long it is which will make her pace just that much more. It's not a secret, she knows I do it ;)

Hope you all have a magical time with your parents, if not it's a large crowd, if MY Mom is reading the boards tonight I would never lose you in a crowd, no matter how hard I tried ;)

Unsolicited advice: try to roll with the punches, at least for this trip, if you can - if something like this drives you crazy, you will have a stress induced stroke by the end of the trip! Can she stay in a separate room, at least?

People with memory loss are actually not trying to drive you crazy, and if you can both laugh at it, it will get a little easier!

I used to have the same conversation with my mother 3, 4, 5 times in the space of 10 minutes. The only way she'd realize we'd had the same conversation over and over within the past few minutes is if I seemed annoyed. If you are pleasant and nod (and don't let her see that you are annoyed by her memory loss, even if you are) it will make things easier. I know that's easier to say than to do, though!

Maybe I read it wrong, but I thought the OP was already taking it in stride? I thought she was laughing lightly about it. Maybe I'm nuts and she was serious?

In either case, I'm going to be having fun too. I'm surprising my grandparents and so I don't have to hear any comments yet. . . but since neither have ever been to either WDW or DL. . . the whole trip will probably be full of comments, questions, and mistakes. BUT, I'm prepared. :) I love my grandparents anyways.
