Yesterday, I took DD to rent a flute for the school year. Well, we ended up buying one instead. It was a hard deal to pass up. They do it like a rent-to-own for 33 months with no interest whatsoever! We ended up walking out of there with a $800 Yamaha flute for $23/month plus $75 down. It made a lot more economical sense to buy it now instead of renting it again. It costs $150 per year to rent X 7 years is $1050. I saved $250 by buying it.

I wish I would have bought it last year but we didn't know if she'd stick with it. Luckily, she's awesome at it and plans on sticking with until she graduates.

Dang, this middle school thing is expensive!

Be happy she's not into the viola. $4,000! But she's studying music in college and will be a music teacher.

Good luck to your DD! :thumbsup2

At least it is a flute. DH's trombone was $3000. You get into some of the double reed instruments like an oboe or bassoon and you can double that or more! The twins' saxophones are $1800 each!

I think the only instrument that is cheaper is the Clarinet. (Atleast of the instruments on their price list.) I'm so not looking forward to band camp next year. lol

My DD plays piano........which we had to purchase for our house once she got serious. Yikes!

We have the SAX...2,000ish

Also we have to buy REEDS which run about 50.00 for a box of them, lasts a couple of months. Then there are mouthpieces oh and an overhaul includes changing the pads.

You got lucky!:lmao: Seriously it is so worth it. She is in 10th grade now and loves to be in the Marching Band playing at the football games.

You'll get $30 for it at a garage sale in 3 years. ;)

I just wanted to share a story with you to reasure you that when it comes to music, you really can't spend too much or too little. When I was in the 6th grade I wanted to play the flute. Well, it was $500 for a new flute and my mother said no way was she paying that much money. So said that I needed to stop complaing ado my chores, which included emptying the dishwasher. I was so upset, I walked over to the dishwasher still stating my case about how much I wanted to play the flute. My mom told me to stop talking and finish my chores. I opend the dishwasher and inside was a brand new flute. Here we are 20 years later and I still play that flute. Not professionally, but I enjoy it as much as the first time I played it.

my poor parents shelled out the money for a Clarinet for me (played for a year and gave up) A Flute for Dsis (she played 4 yrs and gave it up) violin (this was Dsis new passion) lasted 1 yr....and well the list could go on...Trumpet (1 yr)

What a sweet story--love it!

We have a collection of instruments that my 6yo will be able to choose from. A sax that my 12yo still plays (that he probably won't play for much longer), a trombone that my older son played, and a trumpet that my DD played. We did the rent to own programs with the sax and trombone, but the trumpet used to be my DH's. We had to get it refurbished, but it's a beautiful, well made instrument (and he also still had his silver trumpet that he played when he was older). Oh, and my teen son also has an electric guitar, so my youngest can use that, too, if my oldest son looses interest when he's older.

Pianist here too! :teeth: I didn't get a piano until I was in my mid-late teens.

My BF is adamant that one day, when we are married with our house that has 'five bedrooms and a swimming pool' (we live in the UK - our houses are generally quite small with small gardens and no room for a swimming pool... he has BIG plans!) he's going to buy me a Baby Grand ;) I pointed out that the instrument/musician have to choose eachother and he can't just go out and buy something that looks nice.

My oldest daughter played the clarinet just long enough for us to pay for the dumb thing. We rented-to-own and just as the last payment was made she quit. I think when all was said and done we paid about $1000 for the thing.

Then my son decided to play the trombone. We rented that for a year, then he quit, so we returned it.

My youngest daughter starts band this year and she wanted to play the flute. But since we already owned a clarinet, I talked her into trying that instead. We'll see how that goes.

I went to E-bay and bought my older DD her violin 4 years ago for $100.00
that she's still using.

Bought my younger DD a clarinet for $40.00 that she only used that year.

I feel your pain. :goodvibes DD thought she wanted to play cello, an instrument that her school would provide. But noooo  She had to fall in love with the oboe. We're talking $$$$. What are you gonna do? She hopes she can eventually get a college scholarship with it. I'm glad we ponied up on this one. She loves her oboe and she plays it. Keeping her in reeds is another story entirely($15-20 EACH)
