If his medication is an auto-injector -- and that's what it sounds like from your description -- the needle retracts back into the pen. You can request a sharps container for your room. You can discretely dispose of the pen in any public sharps container. Or you can put the used pen into a sturdy plastic container and take it home to dispose of in your home container. Sounds like 1 injection, 1 pen, so it's really up to you how much hassle you want to take to dispose of it.
We always travel with a dry-box for our medications (kind of like this); I would put it in a separate baggie and place the baggie back in the dry-box until I got home to dispose of it easily. This is exactly what we do when camping.
