Sharpie marker on fabric

Hey guys! This is one of those questions that I knew I could turn to the Dis for, and someone would have an answer.

I have a t-shirt with autographs on it. (Seven of the top 10 American Idol finalists from this year...it was the experience of a lifetime) Anyway...it is a black t-shirt, signed with silver sharpie. Is there a way to prevent the autographs from fading? They look like they are already starting to fade to me, and I haven't even washed it yet. I'd really like to continue wearing it, but not if the autographs are going to fade away.

Does anyone know of anything to make sure the marker sets in?

I wouldn't have gotten the shirt signed at all, but some friends gave us surprise backstage passes when we were already inside the concert, and that's all I had with me!

Thanks!

It won't wash out. My stepson had a hockey t-shirt autographed many years ago, and his dopey mother washed it. A FEW times.

It never lost any signatures.

Sharpies rock if you're looking for permanent. :teeth:

If it was black sharpie it would last a really long time, but with silver you have to be more careful. I use sharpies on fabric alot, and the silver tends to rub off and fade more. Maybe you should just get that shirt framed.

Check the fabric or craft store for a spray just for this. It's called signiture stay or something like that .Take another shirt sign it and try to scotchguard over that and wash it a few times to see how it works before trying it on the real one.

I went to the Sharpie web site. I didn't find a way to remove it but there was a Disney contest on there. How freaky is that! I couldn't get it to open though so maybe it was old? If you get it let me know! Thanks Tracy

I got it to open you can even order the planning DVD from the sight link as well.

I do remember them using the Sharpies' all over Epcot this past June at the KidCot places so that must be the link.

Never had any luck with getting Sharpie marks out, but I will have to check out that website and see what they say! :)

I bought these white canvas shoes to decorate, but the design is very detailed so I decided to sharpie rather than paint them. i plan to get one of those 24 packs and just use them instead of acrylic paint. is this a good idea? will the colors stay bright/be permanent? i don't know which would be better for painting shoes. i could always scotchguard/signature stay them...

As others have said, Silver Sharpies are a whole different story. They will fade with repeated washings. My son had a navy blue T-shirt with silver Sharpie autographs on it. Now, after normal wear and washing, the autographs are all but gone. I have no idea how to improve their staying power, except for not washing the item.

I would try ironing them. If you have some parchment paper, put that on the right side of the fabric so hopefully it won't stick to the ink. I think maybe freezer paper or waxed paper might also work. Heat should help set the ink in the fabric.

You might also try calling the company if they have an 800 number, which most do, and ask.

Wow...hello old thread!

I am the OP of this thread (from 2006). I think the poster I quoted above brought this thread back to life today instead of starting a new thread. The search feature must have actually worked for once!

So I am just bumping so her question gets answered! You can ignore my original question.

Rubbing alcohol!! I posted on the DIS last year- DD had gotten red Sharpie on a brand new mint green T, and I was trying to get it out. Someone told me to try rubbing alcohol (get the highest % alcohol content possible), and it worked!! It took 2 washings, and I really soaked the stain, but it came out completely.

OP. what's the condition of your shirt? Did the signatures stay or did they fade over the last 2 years?

Totally gone. I can still faintly see them just because I know they are there, but I don't think anyone else would ever notice them. I did take pictures of all of them before I washed the shirt for the first time, so its all good!

There is a product called Amodex that can take Sharpie OUT of fabric...just an FYI for those interested in getting RID of their Sharpie marks on clothing! :lmao:
