Tell me what you do with your family (kids) that is special. We are in a new house & dd is a bit older & I'd like to start making some special memories for us... what do y'all do every year?

We like to all watch a Christmas movie together in the evening during this time of year. We seem to have a never ending collection of Christmas movies so we never run out.

every Friday Night we have "Family night". This is a time to unwind from the hard week. We have something easy to eat (usually finger foods)or order out, and use paper plates(so limited mess).

We take turns picking a kid friendly movie from our DVD collecetion(mostly Disney). No one is allowed to "suggest" a movie to the movie selector, and no complaining of the movie picked by anyone. This is a challenge with DS11, DD9, and DS3. And sometimes we will play a board game, cards, etc.

DS11 and DD9 have been known to forgo a sleepover if it interfers with "Family Night". Even DS3 gets excited when it is his turn to pick.

Now with the holidays, they are limited to Christmas movies.....

At the holidays, I bake Christmas sugar cookies and then the family decorates them together. It's very messy and very fun!

For regular everyday, we read books to our kids almost every night before bed.

We have lots of traditions but the first to come to mind today is the rolling of the meatballs. This time every year I make meatball soup and we all sit down one evening and have snacks and talk about whats going on in our lives while we roll about 1,000 tiny little meatballs :sunny:

This time of the year the boys always ask when it's "meatball time".

Every Christmas, each family member selects a new ornament for the tree. These are always the first ones they put on the tree. We mark each one, to idntify who selected it, and the year it was bought. (plus all the one thye make in school) Sso they may take these with them when they have a place of their own.

Each year we get one of those picture frame ornament with the current year on it, one for each child, put a current year picture in it and hang it on the tree. It gets easy once the kids are in school and gets school pictures taken. I just use the current school year picture. So far it's turning out great. Note: For the first Christmas, we have a First Christmas frame.

Another traditions is to send out New Year greeting cards rather than Christmas. It's just too hectic to get the Christmas ones sent out in time.

I love these ideas! As a new family I am looking forward to traditions of our own! I can't wait until I have kids old enough for family movie night. It sounds great!
