Last time i was at Sea World, Shamu was just a small "calf". Is he/she still there? I really hope they still have the killer whales there, i remember that being my favorite part of my orlando vacation when i was little.

Anyone been there recently?

Yes, and baby Shamu as well. We were there in March and paid a visit. We loved the Rock with Shamu Show at the end of the day.

No trip for us is complete without seeing Sea World!!! Don't know if they have any "baby Shamus", but worth the trip anyway!!! :lovestruc

Is Shamu at SeaWorld? Of course. But "Shamu" is actually just a stage name for multiple whales. They all have real, unique names, but they're referred to as Shamu for the sake of show. The real Shamu was alive back when SeaWorld San Diego first opened.

Shamu is the native name for the killer whalers - I think it means "friend to men"????

yes - the killer whale is still at SW - you can now have a meal with them...

you can now have a meal with them...
This was one of the highlights of our 9/02 vacation. The food wasn't anything to rave about, but the experience was awesome. We were lucky to have a table right next to the tank. There is a very high risk you will get soaked during this meal----Shamu swam by a couple times and flooded out the ground under our table. The trainers talk to you about how they got their jobs (bacground experience/education), how they go about training the whales, whale habits etc during your meal.
Also, here's a live Shamu web cam from the San Diego SW if anyone is interested : http://www.shamu.com/ca/shamu-cam/index.htm

Orlando's Seaworld swapped some whales with San Antonio over a year ago. From what I can tell, there are now four female grown whales weighing about 5,500 lbs each. Three have babies of various ages. The young ones are so cute. For a while, the babies would try to copy the moves of their mother. Now, they participate in some of the show and work with another trainer when mom performs other parts.

The star of the Shamu show is the largest killer whale in captivity - a 12,500 lb giant male that can really splash the audience. He is a must see!!

they are all called shamu. i think its so none of the kids get upset when they come back a few years later and shamu has died. there will always be a shamu just like there will always be a mickey mouse. clever way of avoiding the problem of biological attractions. my theroy anyway. either that or they are really bad at thinking up new names.

personally shamu was great but he lacks the comedy timing of clyde and seamore.

I believe all the killer whales have their own unique name, but as a whole, they are called Shamu. I believe Shamu means "friend of Namu." It avoids confusion by calling all killer whales Shamu. Plus, it helps to sell plush animals of them!
