Please bear with me since this is the very first shaker box I have ever made.

Supplies
paper
thin fun foam (enough for 2 layers)
Clear plastic sheets (backing form 3-D embellishments)
Wet adhesive or a xyron if you have one
beads
*please allow adequate drying time between steps*

Step 1
Cut 1 die cut out of paper and 2 out of fun foam. Leaving enough edging to glue.

Step 2
Cut back piece of shaker by tracing outline of paper from step 1.

Step 3
Trim clear sheet to fit opening making sure that you leave and edge to glue.

Step 4
Adhere fun foam to bottom piece using your xyron or glue. (my xyron was not big enough for the fun foam so I used glue. At this step you can also adhere both sheets of fun foam first or 1 at a time to the paper.

Step 5
Fill space with beads 1/8 tsp at a time. For the film strip I used 1/4 tsp total in each space. The pumpkin was 1/4tsp of each color and I used 3 colors.

Step 6

Notes:
* It was late so I didn't let my glue dry between steps, so let it dry.
* Try to find fun foam that is a close match to your paper. The orange has white FF and you can see a bit of it.
* You can decorate the back piece with pics before adding the fun foam and beads.
* I used 2 sheets of fun foam because the thicker sheets didn't fit in the sizzix machine. It does however give a seamless seal around the edges as long as it's glued down well. There will be less chance of beads escaping.

After vigorous shaking the beads are still intact.

Have a great weekend everyone. Now go do your homework! Class DISmissed.

Thank you so much for the lesson! I've received cards with shaker elements but never knew how to do it.

Great job Buffy!!!
I've also used... mounting tape if I can't find a good match to my paper choice.. at if it's a rectangular or square shaker.. but when they are specific shaped I would definitely use the foam for the shaker support!!!
Thanks again!!!

I have always used mounting tape but I am trying to get fun foam to work in my craftrobo but I haven't gotten the setting right yet. Using the wishblade i cut a different shape in the center but I love the way you did the pumpkins, I hadn't thought about doing it that way. Thanks,

Rebecca

Fun foam! (where is the smilie of the the face hitting herself on the forehead?) I never, ever, ever, thought of fun foam! What a great idea! I had wanted to make a round shaker box and couldn't get the tape to seal well. Never again!:wizard: Thanks, teach! :teacher:

I figured your instructions would include the mounting tape, since that's what so many instructions say to use. And then I was going to post about using fun foam and your die cut machine, because that's what I do for my stuff now. But that's what you posted!

So another two thumbs up for using fun foam as the spacer material. I posted this on another thread, when using the ATG gun, the adhesive doesn't want to stay stuck to the foam, so a wet adhesive is better.

Yes, I found a wet adhesive better on the fun foam.. I tried it the other way.. and it worked but not well..

Mickster, I so tried the mounting tape on a circle shaker once.. about half way through my floor was covered in beads, I was not saying nice words and my kids thought I had lost my mind!!

Sizzix makes a Shaker Box die, too -- about 1-1/2" square, 1/4" thick, no spacer foam needed. I've put the transparency inside the box, or glued it to the back of a die cut with a "window" cut out of the center, and glued the box on behind the window.

Gotta get some photos to post -- I hope the description will suffice for now.

I haven't seen one of them... are they in the RED set?

I have made shaker boxes from scratch - pretty intimidating but easy - but I have also picked up a couple cute premade kits at Dollar Tree. I got a balloon shape, a heart, and something else that I can't remember. Each kit has materials to make three shaker boxes in three sizes. Not bad for a buck!

Thanks Buffy, those are cute!! I also have the Sizzix Shaker Box die, but I do love how you use original ideas on yours!! very creative!!

Thanks!

If anyone would like to "try out" this diecut, I would be happy to send you one; please send your snail mail address to me via PM. I'm busy over the weekend, but can cut them out and mail them on Wednesday.

I bought 20 of those off ebay thinking they would be bigger. Why, I don't know. Clearly they couldn't be too big if they were Sizzix. I'll be using them for which every swap I said I would. I thought it was AK, but it might be the MK one. I really need to go get working on those.

Anyway, I've always used the two sided foam tape and hated every minute of it. Especially having to color in the sides so it didn't look so obvious. I love the idea of using foam cut in the proper shape. THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks Buffy! I've yet to make a shaker box (tried once and failed miserably) but now that I know about the fun foam I'll have to give it a try.

I'll link this class description in the "Swap Glossary" for future reference!

Too bad the shaker box can't be used in the Sidekick.

Very good class, Miss Buffy. I've done shaker boxes before. Made a sunflower with sunflower seeds in the middle and a balloon. Unfortunately, I didn't like how the foam glue dried. Wrinkled the paper. What wet adhesive did you use?

The pattern for the sunflower shaker box is located at http://scrapbooking.about.com/library/weekly/blsunflowerlayout.htm

Thanks, Buffy! I couldn't get my mind around how to do this, but your pics and descriptions helped tremendously!! Great job, Teach!! :cool1:

I use Scotch tacky adhesive. It works well and dries fairly fast.

Wow, I thought I knew how to do this but I had been using foam tape. I would have never thought of using fun foam and cutting it with the die cut machine to match. Great instructions: thanks!
