I had forgotten about roof top carriers!! My Sport Trac has the rack on top, but didn't come with the crossbars, so a trailer was more economical for us.

Don't go to Lowes or Home Depot. They are way expensive for what you get. From one of the "side of the road guys" my husband bought a 16ft extra wide for 800. Our Lowes in Tx wanted almost 1000 for a trailer 1/2 the size and less sturdy!!
Even on the enclosed trailers the ones on the side are less expensive.

Also, if your Expedition has a hitch on it, you may want to consider one of the add-on cargo platforms that are inserted in the hitch receiver. There are a couple of examples shown in the link in the message above. Hope this helps.
