I want to plant a small garden but the area that I have does not get much sun. What are some nice flowers that I can plant?? Even though green is my favorite color I want FLOWERS with a variety of nice colors not just green plants.

Hi WDW2002! :)

There are all kinds of beautiful plants for shade gardens. Most of them appreciate morning sun, as opposed to deep all-day shade.

Gardening in the Shade is a link to suggestions for shade loving perennials, annuals, and groundcovers. Be sure to click on the link "Stars of Shade" just above the" Gardening in the Shade" heading, it will give you some advice on plants for dry or damp shade.

Some perennial shade plants that we have in our garden are:

Cranesbill Geranium - Johnson's Blue
Lamium - White Nancy
Bleeding Heart
False Spirea - Fanal
Sweet Woodruff

They have all performed great! :)

One of our other Buds may have more suggestions for you. :)

Let us know what you decide to plant. :)

Kim :)

What about a garden that gets very little if NO sun. Or an area that get a little aftenoon sun?

I will check out that link you gave me. And will let you know what i get.

Most shade loving perennials bloom in the early spring bringing color to the area....usually before the foliage of trees completely blocks out the sun. I haven't found any shade loving perennials that bloom past spring (drove myself nuts one year).

You may want to fill in with impatiens....that little annual loves the shade and blooms its little head off all summer.

Hostas do get some flowers in July around here. But that's for a fleeting moment.

this is what I was leaning toward. They seem to come in a variety of color which is what i am looking for. Do they do well in a "poted garden?" The soil in the apartment doesn't look to good for gardens, so I was thinkng of doing a pot (not that kind of pot) garden.

Yes, you can pot them and they'll do great!

If you can hang pots, fuschia also does great in the shade. It cascades down over the lip of the pot....really creates a beautiful effect.
